*** 25/02/2011 EXTENSION! *** DEAL OF CENTURY: Asus GeForce GTX 480 1536MB Graphics Card with 2 FREE

I give up! It seems every two minutes I read a different description of the noise level of the 480. It's like a vacuum cleaner or a hairdryer or a jet enging according to some. It's no louder than most other gfx cards, not an issue at all, or on a par with a normal CPU fan according to others.

The new BIOS either makes the card cooler and draws less power, or it makes no difference and it's all down to the case you use.

I can't take any more!

I would pre-order one of these if I could be confident that:
a) it would be quiet enough not to disturb my work in the daytime at idle but likely not clocked all the way down (due to two monitors)
b) when gaming it would not disturb my wife who will sometimes be working at her desk about 2.5 metres away from my PC.

But... one minute it seems both those criteria are going to be okay with the 480, the next it seems I'd find it unacceptable.

I feel like I'm going slightly mad :)

it's different to everyone, I guess. Personally I don't mind the noise and it doesn't even sound that loud. When I have headphones on I can't hear it at all and I sit literally a few inches away from my tower. If you want I'll record some of the noise from like 2.5m away on my webcam, so you can gauge how noisy it will be.

This isn't a 480GTX btw, it's my scythe ultra kaze, but it runs at the same noise level as a 480 GTX under load.

All this talk about the 480 and the 6950/6970 is really annoying :(

I need a card that gives me the best performance and that's it.

You mentioned other aspects of your PC that your were considering upgrading, in that case perhaps you'd be best to put your cash on the most needed component change?

The HDD isn't essential, i've got a 1TB external drive which i can move files over to if needed, and also RAM isn't essential either.

Gaming is what i do the most on the PC and a new GFX card with DX11 sounds too good.

Enjoy your new card, let us know how you find the (I assume) 480 over the 4870X2. :)

In a well cooled case with CPU core temps on my i5 2500k of just 24c right now, my GTX 280 is idling at 54c.

The more I think about this the more I think the 480 will be the same if not better than my 280 at everything including temps and fan noise?

I did not find my 285 loud even with the fan at 75%+.

I game when it is that fast so i did not notice it that much.

A well cooled case is the key to the 480. Lots of cold air for the fan to suck in and i think it will be ok.

Thats my logic for going with it anyway ;)

On another note how is the Asus board Fox? Any teething troubles? I read many of your posts debating what board to get.

I still would like to get a Pro when i do my upgarde soon if the new BIOS's have resolved many of the issues?

Cheers

What cooler are you using for the CPU? Have you overclocked? That is pretty impressive idle for an SB chip.

Gelid Tranquillo - not overclocked (Have now, but not when I posted that). I suspect it was as low as that as the machine had been idle all day in the cold whilst I was at work. Once I've finished running Prime on this overclock I'll tell you what it idles at when the heating is on etc.

Ah, if you've not overclocked yet, that would probably explain it. Once overclocked (on Manual), these boards do not step the voltage down in speedstep. I'm currently "idle" (I have a few things going) at 40c at 1.36v.

I'm an hour into my Prime95 test at 4.5Ghz - max core temps of 68c. So I'll let you know where it settles idle wise once I stop :)

The good news is that even under heavy CPU load there is plenty of cool airflow in the case and around the graphics card. I'm starting to think the 480 might be worth a shot.. especially as my 280 is currently idling at 57c! I mean how much worse can this thing be?

Several people have mentioned already that neither the temp or noise is much of an issue in a decent case with decent airflow.

Just order the 480 already :P

If you have paid (or sneakily used the free forum shipping) for the DPD Next Day, then the order shall be delivered to you on Monday as long they arrive in stock on Friday, or if you have paid extra for the Saturday delivery then they will be with you on Saturday. :)

I hadn't noticed the free forum delivery and ended up paying for it.

How much would Saturday delivery cost?

And if I wished - could I get a refund on the shipping as I'd be eligible for free shipping?

Idle is 31 5 minutes after stopping Prime. It does seem to be dropping the voltage according to CPU-Z. But then I left it on Auto?
