*****SANDYBRIDGE MOTHERBOARD CHIPSET ISSUE*****

I wonder what will happen to all of the recalled boards? I wouldn't mind buying one dirt cheap and only using the problem free sata ports.

If I was the Mobo Manufacturers I'd swap everyone's B2 boards with brand new B3 boards (literally the same postman takes your old one and gives you the new one).
Then the returned B2 boards I'd swap the dodgy chip for a good one and then either flog them dead cheap as refurbs or just use them as replacements for anyone's B3 board in a few months time.

One would assume, the boards will be pulled apart, the effected chipsets re-spun or thrown in the bin and then the boards re-manufactured to new B3 revision and sold as new again with full warranty. :)

There will be no cheap boards, infact boards will go up in price now as there will be a huge shortage for 8-10 weeks. So those who have Sandybridge just enjoy it and once the manufacturers put their recall plans live simply get the board swapped out if you wish. :)

Yeah as above really. I can't imagine Intel would let known-defective boards to be sold on the market would they Gibbo? (from a reputation point of view)

Cheers, that makes sense, shame though I am loving my sandybridge board and it would have been nice to upgrade my other rig on the cheap! :p

Do you have plenty of Asus p67 pro boards still available? I'm waiting on an RMA decision from another site before I can sort out my upgrade

Intel don't want sales to stop, at the same time they don't want a bad reputation. We've been recommended to continue selling what we have but with a disclaimer and they are over the moon with our "bright red text" on descriptions and all the work we have done on our forums.

So we shall continue selling, as those buying now are fully aware of the issues and then when recall plans go live those customers if they wish can get a swap out then or they can just stick with the board and get it replaced under warranty if they so wish.

Yeah plenty left, though people are now buying 1366 kit in general instead, only the real enthusiest/overclockers are still buying Sandybridge.

Whats the problem? I have two Sandybridge systems and they are fine, the issue only affects the SATA 2 ports, why anyone wanting a new system would buy a 1366 system puzzles me, especially as you can get a replacement motherboard in a few weeks if it really niggles you.

can we not bring back our boards now for a refund or credit as im taking my board out tonight as i need all ports working now not in 2 months time ?

Dear Partner

I would like to highlight a key temporary solution to this issue.

The following Asus P67 based motherboards have an additional 2 SATA6Gb/s ports on board which do NOT use the intel controller but a 3rd party one from Marvell, these ports in addition to ports 0 & 1 on the intel controller are NOT affected by the sandy bridge SATA issues, therefore the key message is that these ASUS sandybridge boards have 4 SATA 6Gb/s ports that will NOT develop the fault and can be used permanently with no issue.

MAXIMUS IV EXTREME

SABERTOOTH P67

P8P67 DELUXE

P8P67 EVO

P8P67 PRO

P8P67

Thanks

Update from Asus

1) Gigabyte has stopped shipment to and recalled any unsold 6-series B2 motherboards from distributors and dealers.

Hey,

How comes you are still selling these boards?

4) The replacement program will happen at the dealer/distributor level. You will have to exchange your board at the location you purchased it from.

The anandtech suggests you have to send the boards back to ocuk, if this is the case, what will be the procedure for this? Just wondering on behalf of my friend who purchased SB from ocuk

why would you want to do that?

Ask yourself, what will I do with the CPU?
have I had any issues?
do I feel unlucky enough to not only be one of an estimated 5% but also have the degradation occur in the next 4-8 weeks?

seems like unnecessary trouble to me.

Have you read any of the posts above? I suggest you read the posts myself and Gibbo have posted to educate yourself alittle on the situation.

Do you use all sata ports on your board ? I do so need a board that works without thinking it might go wrong one day and as for cpu im keeping for when all is sorted.

Nath,

Theres 5 pages of posts now, I don't have the time whilst doing my normal job to trawl through that, I'm allowed to look here as it was built for my MD and he's very keen to get his possibly faulty stuff returned.

LOL @ Asus post, think those reading this thread that could use that work around had already done that yesterday.

BTW the 5% figure is for all users, and the vast majority of those aren't expected to be using the affected ports, if you are putting heavy loads on the 2-5 ports you can expect a far higher chance of failure.

Statistics and damn lies ;)

I am in full agreement with you. This Sandybridge for me would have zero effect on me and I'd still be buying a Sandybridge setup right now if I was in the market for a new setup or PC. :)
