One thing that bugs me is the fact that most people I know consider Chinese Takeaway food to be great/lovely/enjoyable.

My problem is that no matter how many I try and from different outlets I never get the sense I'm eating good food, or particularly tasty food at that?

So, could any of you recommend some interesting and different dishes to try, something out of the norm that perhaps many would pass by without consideration?

I know you're going to get many recommendations on personal experiences. But I find the best thing at my local is beef in blackbean sauce, with boiled rice AND noodles. Prawn crackers also.

Lush to the point I crave it now I've written it :(

I think you need to be a bit more specific about what you mean. "Chinese" food isn't completely alien to the other types of food available, and is essentially comprised of the same ingredients as many other types of food.

Well I've about 10 Chinese Takeaway menus in front of me and they all pretty much look the same, a few deviations but not a lot.

So I mean your a-typical Chinese takeaway in your local town/city.

I always have the same thing :p

Beef and green peppers in black bean sauce with fried rice. Spring rolls, prawn crackers, chips, curry sauce, fried mushrooms.

YUM!

Anyone else agree that most indian and Chinese takeaways produce rubbish quality (albeit delicious) food? I only really discovered this when I found an Indian/Thai restaurant nearby that does the most amazing food. All the currys are made with fresh, seasonal vegetables; the meat is always succulant and moist (matron!) and there is no brightly coloured sauces anywhere in sight.

Really opened my eyes to what decent takeaways should be.

Do not takeaway. Takeaway Chinese never tastes as good as eat in Chinese because it is never hot enough, and by the time you get it home, things that should be crispy are slightly soggy.

Try fillet pork Peking style if you like sweet and sour type dishes.

Lots of choice, why not make your own, head down to a local Chinese supermarket, and pick up some sweet and sour sauce, Thai rice, any veggies you fancy, like tomato, salad sort of leafs and bell pepper.

Cook rice first, slap it in a wok, break an egg or two, and while it all cooks, always stir. Cook whatever meat you want if any, like chopped or mince, its just personal taste, fry that in sweet and sour sauce. Also stir all the time. Then add vegies to the egg fried rice, cook them for a little bit, before adding the meat in sauce. And enjoy Asian style "takeaway" at home.
