OcUK Minecraft Server - Rules & Chat

Also, I'm free next week Tuesday (I haz lego arriving) to well Sunday really :p

So once we've agreed on a plan (I don't mean to sound arrogant but I think mine is a pretty good simple idea) I'm happy to jump on and help build as I'll be on constantly, I'll need some supplies though, so might have to go off in search of coal and such.

@FT

Please contact me in IRC for FTP details (my earlier message is pages back and probably got missed in the deluge), regardless of whether people want a reset or not, I'd rather develop a procedure to deal with map corruption and repair either way. The files I'd be looking for would be the 1.2 back prior to conversion and the latest 1.3 that have not been tampered with. The FTP has pretty much unlimited space and bandwdith. Server log files relating to those sets of files would also be useful too.

Can you trust message me? Just so I have an email record :)

having taken on board criticism but also with the intent of keeping the clean layout i've made some significant alterations to my proposed 'spawn town', it is now much less symmetrical (one line of symmetry as opposed to essentially 4) and is now in 1:1 scale

i've deliberately left areas undeveloped as it allows for community work inside the walls as well as outside. i've added business buildings for those entrepreneurs among us who feel they can set up a trade that the shop can't provide. on top of this i've redesigned the bank and station to make them more interesting shapes to break up the blocky nature of the spawn area. in terms of transport the only way to leave spawn after completion will be via the rail network, internally the roads will be lit by 'lamp posts' on either side of the road.

and here it is;

I think that was a lot closer to what it should have been, imo

Yup. Big square, split in to 9 smaller squares divided by paths. Central box you spawn in, nice park. Building on each corner, inn (community), bank / vault, new comer building / town hall and then a market (so players that need something can come and use this).

Sign post things, have a subway under the spawn and entrance to that in an empty square with the portal to the nether as well.

Small wall, maybe 4 high to mark the boundary and then a couple of hundred blocks away have the community spawner / farm (these can be fairly big so putting them a bit away might not be such an eye sore, link them on the subway and have a station :)

It's too big to be honest. It needs to be more utilitarian.

If it's small enough it could easily have a ton of space outside easily accessible for community buildings and still minimise confusion/keep things nice and quick for vault/rail access.

The little squares only need to be 8x8 or maybe a bit bigger, nothing too big as it loses it's appeal if it's massive.

I would say station with enough area to add new lines, the actual spawn where city hall is and then maybe an area for farms behind, it does not need houses, or business buildings contaning nothing.

station can be just under the park, it can be bigger then the park.

Just have four tracks and a mini platform, then make stops / platforms along the line when needed.

Okay..my graphics skills suck but how about something like this?

White square is the spawn 'square'. Dark grey buildings would be the 'vault library' and the purple square a portal to a nether-based minecart station.

This area could be really small and easy to navigate and with the quite low buildings and walls it would be simple to have lots of interesting community projects around it.

I'm not against the idea of something like Springfield or whatever, but the spawn itself should just be a really cut-down and almost boring area that aims to provide a service as fast as possible. Just to repeat myself a bit more, this would mean it would be extremyl close to lots of interesting community builds (in the green/yellow area on my amazingly-drawn map).
