Brian Cox series on BBC

Great stuff, he's a new hero of mine. As Metalface Mark put it, man-crush!

Both series + lots of follow up research on spacetime, 2nd law of thermodynamics, general & special relativity have left me trying to sleep with some high-grade thinking headaches. Shame I can't get out of IT and make some money from learning about this stuff, love it!

Will be windsurfing+camping a lot this year, hopefully in a few 'dark spots' (i.e. not much street light pollution) so fully intend on buying a telescope & a crap load of books.

Watch some "Into The Universe With Stephen Hawking" DVDs.
The way he explains things is very understandable to anyone.

I have, really enjoyed it - good recommendation.

Read his books and theses too - fascinating. Some of the maths goes a little beyond my capability - but the concepts are more than easy to understand. :)

I'm with you. He's got to be one of the most boring people on tv. As you say a bell-end.

I disagree, he's just trying to find a level to make the programme most accessible.

He amuses me whenever he seems to regress to the playful child with the silly laugh and misbehaving grin, especially when it's over something silly like picking up a big rock and throwing it.

I really wish the BBC would make some science programs that weren't dummed down to the extreme and were about modern science... the first series was quiet good but I just feel that this one has been made for the lowest common denominator and an excuses for Brain to swan off around the world...

I like the man but i dont think this series is as good as the wonders of the universe as others had said.

I would also like to see him with Dara O'Brian again doing some more of them shows (stargazing was it?) i thought they bounced off each other brilliantly and was very entertaining and interesting.

You've read Hawking's thesis?

Its the best show the BBC has put out in ages. Its the only program I've recorded since... well... its been years, I cant remember :o

While I don't think he's a naturally gifted presenter, his genuine enthusiasm for what he's talking about overrides any presenting faults and gives him a strange appeal.

Pretty much like Carl Sagan, the series seems to be more about making people think about the universe they live in and inspiring a new wave of scientists.

Although at one point I thought he was going to recite Sagan word for word over the pale blue dot caught in a sunbeam episode.

You've got a long way to go Brian... Carl Sagan is still the daddy.

I really like him!

He obviously knows what he's talking about, and has a way of making it appeal to the masses! Brilliant :D

It's Generic-OcUK-GD norm for someone to be a bell end if they don't conform to the OcUK norm. So which side is more of the bell end? :p

Brian is easily digestible and the show is clearly aimed at a younger audience although it can be fully enjoyed by adults as well via sound and vision.

He does have a bit of a grin and a shiny face 100% of the time but meh, who cares?

Just you, he's ****ing amazing!

really? compared to the Stephen Hawking's Universe series, it's very long winded and boring. Far to many arty shots of him in a sand dune for no reason and far to, well sounding slightly special and slow. In fact I haven't been able to sit through an entire episode yet, all though I keep trying.

Pretty much this.

I think that if you have no previous idea of physics, it could be very interesting.

However, I find his shows boring and long winded and sensationalised

The trouble is with presenters is that they sometimes suffer from the content on their programme. They don't always have control of this and at times Cox's content has been pre GCSE, really dumbed down material. There are too many blu-ray shots, and at times his shows suffer from what I call Top Gear -itis. Like when Clarkson blew the last part of a season's budget by travelling all over the planet to open a glove box.

I absolutely love him though, just because he clearly is into the material he's presenting. Can never knock that kind of natural enthusiasm.

That's not really what I meant it's just the way he says it and the pauses. as well as the stupid background settings and some of the comparisons. It's just got a far to arty feel and not enough graphics and nuts and bolts.

Agreed.

Personally I feel it's aimed at people who don't really know what is going on and that just makes it boring, but pretty for me.

Have nothing against the guy but I wish he went into more detail.
