Probably quite a lot. Myself, I think its a good price because £13m isnt a huge amount to pay for a full international these days, and its a good price for a decent keeper who has maybe 15 years of his career yet to come.

Yeah £13m isnt a big deal in those terms.

This is based on absolutely nothing but i can see a move for Buffon. I just cant see SAF trusting a young keeper. Time will tell.

Im sure you watched him in the WC didnt you?

Apart from one game, he was a constant in the German team (even assisting a Klose goal against England.....although I admit I didnt recall that)

Certainly did, I think he still has some development to do but right now as a basis for a long term keeper, I think £13million for him is a pretty decent deal. Especially when there are other keepers who are similarly rated who are being touted at almost twice that price by some corners.

No, my implication was that a CB could be relocated to RB.

I didnt say "one game" or anything like it. I was using the CL as an illustration. I am well aware that Brown played the season at RB.My point was that you can be the best team in Europe without a recognised RB.

Given the right center back yes.

As united dont have the right centre back to fill in a full back at this point the argument is irrelevant.

O'Shea has been out right diabolical this season and must be shown the door, Evans is a joke, Brown is either injured or completely out of form and you need sectioning if you are suggesting one of Vidic, Fedinand or Smalling play at full back.

What i am saying is fairly simple. What you choose to read into it is entirely up to you.

O'Shea and Rafael are clearly our choices at RB.

We won the CL with Brown at RB, the point im making is that its not the most important position on the field. Illustrated by our choice of players in that role.

I disagree completely.

Most of our attacks go down the flanks, you can see when we have Evra and O'Shea playing for example that we'll nearly always focus down the left because Evra is much stronger. You can see the difference between Valencia playing with one of the twins behind him and O'Shea behind him.

I think just because we haven't been strong there in the past it doesn't mean it isn't important.

Its a question of scale. It is LEAST important, that doesnt mean it isnt important.

We won the league and CL with Brown. He ISNT a natural RB. We were the best club in Europe with him there. Dont even get me started on Gary Neville.

The point im trying tomake is that while full backs can be important they are not naturally instrumental.

Ermmm, yes they are, they are vitally important to how a team plays.

I'm not going to get into the hows and whys, but on a very basic level the difference between having a good full back and a crap one is MASSIVE.

A good full back cuts out your opponents crossing threat, a good full back who knows his role will provide overlapping runs for your wide midfielder/winger and help out number the opposition defence and keep them pinned back.
A good full back can create/deny space at both areas of the pitch in the most dangerous areas.

The fact that United "get by" with John O'shea floundering away at either full back from time to time does not demonstrate that the position isnt important.
United have won games with Darren Gibson in midfield, he has been dreadful for 99% of the time he has played there, but you wouldnt say central midfield isnt important.

Every position on the pitch is important, a crap full back will leave your central defenders horribly exposed.

So who's making bids for the following:

Green
Upson
Cole
Obinna
Ba
Parker?

I can only see them going to whoever is newly promoted next year.

Who was that player from a couple of years ago who got relegated from the prem with something like 5 different clubs and all in his first season?

My mistake, Marcus Bent, Nigel Quashie (dreadful player!) Herman Hreidarsson and Ashley Ward, with 4 top flight relegations a piece.
Oh and Nathen Blake as well with FIVE relegations, but not all in his first season.

I can see Carlton Cole, Upson and Green going on to challenge for those records.

Im not taling about a player playing the odd game.

United had a season or two of Neville in decline. A season of Brown who is a centre back. Rafael learning his trade and O'Shea.

In that time we have had 3 league titles in a row. 3 CL finals in 4 years and we are now the league champions.

We can easily list the things that good full backs bring. We all know that. The point is you can "get by" with lesser players in that position compared to others.

No more than any other position, in that time you had Carrick having a shocking time, Dimitar Berbatov not scoring for virtually two whole seasons, Johnny Evans at center half, etc etc etc.
The fact is, its a vitally important role, it just so happens that Wes Brown, when he played there, was very good at right back, laying on the cross for the goal in the champions league final.
You see the difference with good full backs the same as good players anywhere else.

The argument you are making is "the club can manage", yes it can, it can manage with a couple of duff other players in other positions as well, the fact is, it shouldnt have to and the crap should get flushed and better players brought in for the overall good of the team.

Winning 3 titles in a row and 3 CL finals out of 4 is not me saying the club "can manage". It is illustrating that it is not essential to have a World Class full back in order to be successful.

Im not saying that the position doesnt matter, im saying it matters less than other positions which is demonstrated by the number of trophies won.

People talking about N'Zogbia earlier in the thread, the way he's performed for Wigan being key in most of their positive results makes me think he'd be ideal for most of the big clubs in the country

Wouldn't be a bad squad player for Spurs filling in when Bale is inevitably injured
Would improve Liverpool's midfield being that they haven't had an out and out winger for years
Not sure he'd get in the United or City teams but I reckon he may get a game at Chelsea given Malouda tends to blow hot and cold

Will be interesting to see who picks him up

Friedel on his way back to Liverpool on a free transfer apparently

Shame to see one of the leagues best keepers end his career as a no2, Spurs are interested as well by all accounts Friedel should go there

Who knows if he's going to be no2? After all the talk about pep, still not sure he will stay.
