The simple problem with Berbatov is that while he did indeed score 20 goals in the EPL from 24 starts and 9 sub appearances the expanded facts don't bear him out.
He scored 3 against liverpool and 5 against Blackburn. So that left him to get 12 goals in 22 starts and 9 sub appearances And he also managed 4 assists this season. While he is without doubt one of the best first touch merchants in the league, he possesses no pace and doesn't hound defenders like others do to get the ball back. The rest of the team is quite well littered with pace and we use it to good effect to break forward. When we had Ronaldo Rooney and Nani running at teams on the break there was always a sense that something might happen. When its Rooney Berba and Nani you just know he'll get the ball and slow it right down.
How many times did Ronaldo/Rooney/Nani destroy teams? before this season Nani hasn't been first team, hasn't played all that much, and in the last year with Ronaldo played less than 600minutes in the league..
Likewise 12 goals in 22 starts put him WAY above the league average, secondly, there isn't a player in the world who can run faster than the ball can be passed. Being slow doesn't mean slowing play down, infact its utterly daft to suggest that.
Xavi, Iniesta have little to no pace, do they slow attacks down, the idea is actually laughable. Berbatov is the best passer the club has had since Scholes has gone downhill.
Your best team in terms of attack was Rooney, Berbatov, Ronaldo, and Berbatov was the start of almost every attacking move, picking the ball and playing the other two in behind the defence every game all game long.
He WAS the basis of your fast attack that year, not the guy who slows it down.
Berbatovs game was always assisting/creating chances/getting the ball forward to players in good positions. The problem this year was Valencia being injured and the seemingly forgotten Rooney playing like turd for half a season. What did Berbatov do, he stepped up for you, moved further forwards, played his not natural game and banged in goal after goal, leading the team to a title win when Rooney dissappeared.
His natural game isn't to be the furthest forward player.
Take Rooney, this season, similar goals/assist stats, before last season, never a high scorer but a decent number of assists, last season, loads of goals, few assists.
Drogba, first season 20 goals, 4 assists, last season 29 goals, 13 assists, the other three seasons he scored a lot less, but assisted more, this season 12-13 goals and 15 assists.
In general teams have two strikers, often there is two roles, normally you'll have one high scorer and one scorer/assister. Berbatovs done both roles very well while the teams won multiple titles.
