If those quotes are legit then that's ridiculous. At the time they offered him the deal there was a very real chance they were going to be relegated (which they were obviously) so to commit to paying somebody over £7m per year was suicide.

Not to mention the whole thing has come about due to a misunderstanding of Owen's use of the word 'poor'. Muppets.

I'll miss Gomes if he does go. His save against Arsenal is the best I've ever seen in the flesh. Spurs were getting bombarded and needed a win to have any chance of CL football. The second angle shows what a great save it was. His hand comes out of nowhere. Big save in a big game.

If you only ever see Gomes on MOTD then it's easy to remember the gaffs and forget the regular world class saves. Friedel will be more consistent but he won't help Spurs pick up a greater number of points.

It doesnt matter how many great saves he has made though, he has reached the stage where the defenders, team and fans must have lost confidence in him. There will always be a feeling that a clanger is a real possibility no matter how well he has played in a game.

Not trying to sound snobby but in the top four that just is nowhere good enough. It's why fans of those sides continually talk about keepers. Lehmann was a great stopper but he too had a clanger in him every 5 or 6 games. An error causing lost points by that method puts you out of most trophies.

Simple fact of the matter is if Spurs have any intention of being taken seriously as a top four club, then Gomes simply isnt an option.

You can't a keeper who has that amount of gaffes in him in a season and expect to challenge for anything.

I dont think Friedel is going to change anything either, it will either result in a player taking up wages who will never play, or completely destroy what little confidence Gomes has left.

With Cudicini signing a new contract the other week, it surely spells the end of Gomes's time at Spurs. Not even Redknapp's going to have 3 high earning keepers on the clubs books.

I'm not sure what the Villa fans on here think but I was talking to a Villa supporting friend of mine and he was saying that Friedel's form wasn't like it was in past seasons. He'll certainly do a reasonable job for Spurs but at 40, his performances are only going to decline.

Friedel apparently turned down Liverpool so he could continue his consecutive games so he's certainly going there to be #1. Cudicini appears happy to be #2. Bye bye Gomes, it's been funny.

Yea, the other week the talk was he was all but signed for us as we were offering him a 2 year deal to Spurs's 1 year deal. Spurs giving him the extra year and first team football swayed his decision.

His lack of ambition was there to see long before the bike accident. He was arguably the best keeper in the league from 2002-2004 but when Chelsea signed Cech he was happy to take his money and sit on the bench. And then to move to Spurs as a number 2 again was even worse.

To be fair I wouldn't mind getting paid a **** load to watch football every week...shame it has to be Spurs :(

spurs are one of the best teams to watch

people seem to be overlooking the fact we are in europe next season. with our young croat seemingly not staying, we were in need of another keeper. if redknapp has any sense, he will use one keeper purely for europe and let the other 2 fight for first selection in the league.

This argument always comes up with friends who are Spurs fans. I just laugh at them because our uber defensive team containing '3 defensive midfielders' outscored Spurs and conceded less.
Doesn't matter how attacking or how well you play its the goals scored and conceded that matter, look at Arsenal!

Friedel will be a good signing for Spurs, will make less mistakes anyway and has been very consistent past 3 seasons at Villa something which Spurs haven't had.

Spurs goals scored has nothing to do with the lack of a top class striker? Swap Tevez for any of their strikers, and I'd imagine there would be a huge difference.

This evenings Liverpool transfer rumours:

We want the Henderson deal tied up before Wednesday next week (I believe that's when the u-21's head off for the euros), we've placed an £8m bid for Wickham and hope to beat off competition from Arsenal to sign Jones from Blackburn.

That's all from Tony Barrett in the Times. If we pulled all those off, that could be anything upto £40m spent and we'd still not addressed the main areas of improvement; the wings and a LB. If true, this could be a massive summer ahead for us.

Someone like Defoe would easy score 20+ goals in the City team i reckon. Feeding off Silva, Toure, Johnson, Balotelli etc and being such a poacher in the box (something we don't have) means he would rack up the goals.

Tevez i don't think would score a lot of goals for Spurs. They play with Wingers in Bale and Lennon something which Tevez doesn't do. He picks it up through the middle and runs with it. He isn't a player who will always be in the box which is the case for Spurs.

Mirror is saying Martin Jol, out of a job seince december is willing to take over at Fulham. That would be a huge boost for Fulham. What a manager.

As a spurs fan, I'll always love Jol.

So Defoe who as you say is a poacher would score more goals in a team that don't put crosses into the box than at a team that does? :o

You're right that Tevez works well at City because he's the main man, he likes playing up on his own, only very briefly with Rooney have I ever seen him play well in a front two, Defoe though would be an out and out disaster playing up on his own for City!
