Why is it hard to believe that a 'Spurs said raise your bid?

United offer ~10 million, Spurs tell them to up their bid to ~20 million ?

United offer ~10 million, Spurs tell them he's not for sale, United might make another improved offer but Spurs said he's not for sale.

Maybe because Spurs don't want to sell him

And equally, if they are willing to let him go for a large sum, they don't want to let Utd know they're open to selling him. If Utd want Modric so much that they're willing to pay the sort of sum Spurs will demand then they're not going to be put off by Spurs saying he's not for sale.

If they didn't want to sell him, instead of saying "raise your bid" they could reject it, which is what I said above.

If they wanted a large some, tell United they're not willing to discuss a transfer for less then ~XX million.

You asked why it was hard to believe that Spurs said raise your bid, the answer is simple:

If they don't want to sell, they wouldn't say it and even if they were willing to sell him, they wouldn't want Utd to know they're willing to sell him as it'll stengthen Utd's bargaining position.

As above, if Utd want Modric enough that they'll pay the sort of sum it would require to sign him then they're not going to be put off by Spurs saying he's not for sale.

If Spurs say from the start that he's available for £30m (for example), that's the most they can then get for him. By saying he's not for sale, who knows how high Utd may bid.

I agree, but I don't see why it's such a big deal Spurs asking for more money or why it's confusing.

"You can have him, but not at that price"

as opposed to

"You can't have him"

If United are serious about getting him, they'll up their bid either answer.

A lot of drama over nothing, Utd might have said to a 40mil bid for Ronaldo maybe, we won't sell him for less than 150million, then Real came back at 80mil and they said, sure why not.

The response means nothing except I would suggest a little encouragement by Spurs to get the ball rolling, get him sold asap so they can know who to go for and how much they have rather than waiting till August 30th and having no time to sort a replacement. Considering how many teams got caught out by the window closing in Jan, including Spurs, they are probably less willing to wait this time around.

Anyway, just because Spurs might say they won't take less than 30mil for him, doesn't mean they actually won't take less than 30mil.

Basically anything goes, clubs stonewalling or giving a number makes little difference, Levy knows a number they'll accept and Utd will keep upping the offer till they reach it, unless they decide he's not worth enough.

All of the noises I've heard point to Spurs not wanting to sell and Modric being happy at the club.

He was signed for £16.5mil. It will take a stupid amount of money (at least 1.25 Darren Bents) to prise him away from Spurs.

Well he did saysometing along the lines of never say never to returning to LFC in that interview last night.

Fees for Henderson are bloody ridiculous. Why are we only being linked to overpriced English names =\

Yeah, I just cant see it happening. He is 30 next year, if we assume he is suggesting a return in a couple of years time, he will be 31/32ish. I dont really see us buying a 29 year old player at the moment, let alone someone into their 30s. We're after younger players rather than ones towards the ends of their careers.

He didn't look that good for England the other day. The guy's good, his performances this year for W Ham have been ballsy. I don't think he has the technical ability though to play for a Champions League club, he never really has or he'd have made it at Chelsea. Good enough for a side outside but not in if that makes any sense.

I'd rather we get a proper winger back. Ours are either terrible or are guys who are out of position.

Arshavin - should be more central,
Nasri - more central,
Theo - crap
Bendtner - crap and a striker.

One of the blogs picked up on a thought I had last night. We're fast becoming a club where good youngsters can further their careers and then be sold on. I can't even say that's a good thing because we can't sell in such a way that we'd be a selling club and get a profit.

Selling Nasri for such a cheap price just continues how much of a joke we've become. :/

That number better be very low, I don't think he's worth anything near what Arsefans would probably want to drain from United. And besides the point, anything around that mark would probably fool the dental nightmare that is Nasri into thinking he something above a rotational player, which is all he could ever really hope for with Man United.

Footballers want to win things, United win things and Arsenal don't. Given the fact Arsenal's last few seasons have just fallen apart I'm surprised Arsenal have managed to hang on to a few players.

Can't blame a player for wanting to move to a more successful and bigger club, I understand Arsenal fans annoyed if he goes on a free at the end of next season though, I mean are Arsenal really going to sell to a title rival?
