Something I've mentioned a lot on here recently but people have to take into account the age of the player you're signing when looking at the fee too. Spending £20m on a 20 year old is completely different to spending £20m on a 26 year old.

Very true that. And a free transfer is not always free (in the grand scale of things) ;)

I didn't, somebody else did. They've came up with a formula that converts past transfer fees into what they'd be in todays market - taking into account the amount of money in the game, money being spent etc.

Here's a little bit about it:

So it's basically going on the average price of all transfers, which completely ignores the quality/level of the players being traded?

I mean, if you have a season in which no big names move clubs, and so all the deals are smaller teams paying no more than a few million, then the average is going to be a lot lower than a season when the big guns decide they want a host of new faces, isn't it?

Yeah spending 20m on a 26 year old equates to getting someone proven, spending 20m on someone who's 20 equates to getting someone with potential

I know what I'd prefer ;)

Sky reporting Henderson will actually cost Pool 16m valuing N'Gog at 4m

Not sure where the 13m price tag came from tbh

Think it comes from the original bid for Henderson which was just £13m in cash. So the deal has assumed its 13m in cash still but with a player exchange added onto the deal.

Its 13m upfront + addons depending on appearances for the full national squad and CL qualification.
I heard it was 2m addons, but quite possibly 3 i guess.

4m for N'Gog lets face it is a lot more believable than 7m :p

paul_tomkins: RT @TransferIndex: Torres was valued at £49m and Ngog at £7m by the 'Pay As You Play' panel last summer. #accurate

Its a good book, some here would do well to read it..

Though it doesnt always work out, as case in example when Utd broke the british transfer record to sign Veron at 26 years old for 28m ;)

Of course. There will be the odd season where the numbers are skewed by Chelsea/City's spending spree. But equally, in those seasons, Chelsea/City put a lot of money into circulation which would have as great an influence of transfer fees being paid by other clubs those years too.

There's no perfect way of comparing transfers from different seasons but it's clear that spending £15m on Shearer in 1996 was considerably more than spending £15m on a player today. You can't simply add on the inflation either as football's grown disproportionately to other markets; for example, in '05 Utd turnedover ~£160m, they're not far off double that now.

Sky are reporting Phil Jones is having a medical ahead of a move to Utd.

Given that I've seen several Journo's claiming he's having medicals here there and everywhere today I'm taking it with a pinch of salt. Man Utd would be the most likely destination for him due to the location. Can't see this going down too well with a lot of Rovers fans though.

I suspect that spells the end of our interest in Varane then, surely not enough space for Smalling, Evans, Jones & Varane in the young defender category

I also suspect that confirms then end of Wesley Brown at United
