Wii U

Why are Nintendo so secretive about the hardware specs of their products? We still don't really know what the CPU/GPU/RAM/Optical Drive capacity of the Wii U are. If they are decent why not say? It makes the specs seem like low-end if everybody dodges questions about them.

Could it not simply be that they're not set in stone?

They have time to revise their specs before the launch and the full reveal as this was just really an announcement, yes the controller and an indication of what it would be capable of has been announced but the system itself wasn't highlighted.

I simply think it's due to the fact that they haven't set them in stone.

Oh yeah Pikmin 3 is coming to Wii U :D

The controller wont be that expensive, its essentially just a receiver with a lcd screen.

6.2" screen is not expensive, a 10" panel can be bought for less than £25. The controller will just have the usualy controller circuits plus a receiver for the video signal, so I doubt the Wii U controllers will be above £50 as they are fairly basic when you think about it. They are not a touch screen tablet as they have no gubbins inside, the console does the work and the controller just displays it.

I hope they screens use gorilla glass though as that would atleast give some protection against kids breaking them.

CPU is a Quad Core IBM based processor (Power PC variant), GPU is AMD/ATI produced and the Optical Drive is a propriety high density 12cm system.

That should be sufficient to tell you its going to be a fast system, think of a modern PPC cpu with modern ATI gfx card.

How about a 3.2Ghz G5 + ATI 6890 or something like that, bare in mind the 360 uses a 3.2Ghz Tri Core PPC variant.

Why do so many people rave about Pikmin? I haven't any idea what it is!

EDIT: NM, checked it out on YouTube. Looks intriguing. May have to borrow my sister's Wii. :p

EDIT2: Zavvi reckons £399.99 on 20th July 2012 for launch.

It's not going to be anywhere near that fast. (assuming you mean 6870/6970). My guess is something with about 400SP. Also the 360 tri-core is very different to what we know as a triple-core from AMD. The 360 was a in-order CPU which is slower, but easier to implement, than a out-of-order CPU.

They are a touch screen going by the othello game they showed being played on it.

They are indeed touch screen, but not touch like a tablet as in there is no "computing" done inside the controller its literally just a display, all the technical brainy stuff is still handled through the console and transmitted to the controller.

Until we actually get more information no one knows what the specs will be all we do know is that its a 45nm IBM Quad Core CPU and AMD/ATI GPU.

If we knew more about the CPU we could have a good guess at the performance of the GPU! We might not hear anything officially from Nintendo about the hardware but devs will probably talk a bit about it. All I have seen so far is that one of the devs on Darksiders II has said that the WiiU has more powerful hardware than PS360.

I reckon that the console will have to process the data to the controllers with the screens, just imagine 4 people with them plus whats on the tv..... ???

Keep in mind that a standard Wiimote has an average sale price of £30...

I do wonder about the availability of the new controller. Considering a fair few sources are suggesting the system only uses 1, is it a peripheral likely to be sold in number?

i don't think this will sell at all because ms and sony are way ahead of them. nintendo is just playing catch up because they should have had console like this out years ago. the selling point of wii was the controller and kids and casual market with some original game ips. but i can't imagine any hardcore gamers would chose wii u over ps3 or 360.

Looks good. We finally announced our new project Lego City Stories exclusive for the new console. No more hush hush, exciting times.

Oh read that there is a stylus on the back of that controller so means the screen is resistive.

This is already known, from the first demo with is you can see the screen flex when touched lightly, it has the restitive screen light reflections and it has no multi touch.

You can only use one per console assuming it is supplied with a touch screen controller why would you need to buy another

That was the point I was making. Aside from breaking it, the cost of the controller is irrelevant provided it's 1 per system.

Unfortunately saying that it's an ATI card tells us nothing, it could be bottom of the range.

It won't though. It will be a modified card from a 1 or two generation-old architecture: exactly which one it is gives us an idea of the DirectX level and an indication of the visuals (I know consoles don't use DX). I'm pretty sure the XB360 and the Wii used GFX cards a couple of generations old....

But as usual it's not comparable to PCs due to hardware optimisations and dedicated gaming OS.
