World class fees for what are only decent players. Ever likely the Premier League is full of foreign players. 71 million for Carrol, Henderson and Jones is a joke.

not sure where you get the idea £16m is a "world class fee".

Young & English moving between two English (EPL) clubs is always bound to bump the price up, the only overly pricey one in your list was Carroll (and that was probably mainly to do with the Torres fee being known , and time running out in Jan window to get a replacement)

Especially as we've lost VDS, Scholes, Neville, Hargreaves wages this year (no idea how much they were on)

One of the many retirement pieces I read stated Scholes was only on £60k a week. Scholes is probably one of the only players of his skill / age that you could believe would be on such a low wage (for a top class player).

Must be best part of £300k+ /week being saved from that lot (and with hopefully Brown, Gibson going as well.....another £100k+ ontop)

Still vastly overpriced - unfortunately this nonsense will have repurcussions for clubs buying proven quality like N'Zogbia, Modric et al this summer.

It depends on how you look at transfer fees. If you're looking simply at current ability then it's expensive however if you're looking at them as a longterm investment/asset, it's cheaper than at first thought.

Spending £10m, £15m or £20m on a 20 year old could be half the true cost of spending the exact same fee on a 26 year old for example. Of course, when signing an older player you're likely to be signing a more proven player so it's less of a gamble.

The English transfer market has gone totally mad - £16m for Jones, £20m for Henderson (Valuation, irrespective of player swops etc), Carroll £35m....it's totally ridiculous, and unquantifiable.

You can pick up quality like Bebe for around £7m if you'd dare work the foreign market....

The initial fee is subjective and impossible to make judgement on until a few years down the line.

Joe cole was free, but has a reported annual salary of £4 million with no resale value. On top of that he has hardly played.

Its kind of ironic that that free transfer was very costly.

If i recall correctly he never hired an agent. All his contract dealings he did himself. His relatively low wages reflect the kind of player he was as well though. He turned up, played his game and went home. He was never interested in the glitz and the glamour and the controversy that seems so irresistible to the vast majority of these players.

I always got the impression that he genuinely was just happy to be out there playing football. That someone wanted to pay him to do it was just the icing on the cake.

that's exactly the kind of player he was and i wish there were more like him. he was a massive oldham atheltic fan (think it was them) and he said he'd rather be watching them with his kids and old man than be anywhere else in the world.

That'll be because, by the end, he'd gone past his peak wage. Back at his absolute peak he'd've been paid more, but as he got older, and got extension on top of extension, his wages would have decreased.

I highly doubt clubs reward their players by cutting their pay tbh

Absolutely gutted Phil Jones will be leaving, but it is what it is. £16 million is a steal though, this lad is destined for the very top.

Was hoping we could have brought in Jones as part of a RSC deal and then we loan him back.

Please God can Marwood not now instigate a deal for Cahill.

Smalling and Jones will make a great pairing in a few years

edit: no idea why I typed create instead of great, muppet.

It would be interesting to see what this signing means for Smalling. I can't see Jones joining Utd and I can't see Utd paying £16m if he's going there as 4th choice.

With Ferdinand likely to be around for at least another season and Vidic capable of playing another 3+ seasons, I don't think we'll see much of the Smalling-Jones pairing for quite some time.

Of couse it is possible that Jones is being signed as a CM, although that's unlikely.
