I'm sorry, who's the £35m "Kevin Phillips style one season wonder"?

Phillips is the only Englishman to win the European Golden Boot with 30 in a season - is Carroll likely to do that? a "Michael Ricketts style one season wonder" would have been more apt.

And as for these clowns who are disputing Stewart Downing really need to get off FIFA and Championship Manager and watch some football, he was quality last season.

He was ok last season, nothing more or less, the previous season he managed 2 goals, the season before that none. A top 5-6 club should be looking for consistancy and quality, who he scored against should also be factored in, West Brom, Wolves, West Ham, Blackpool, Blackburn, Stoke and then one goal against Liverpool, not exactly epic.

I wouldn't be offering a big deal to a player who managed to score 2 goals in the past 2 seasons.

The main issue seems to be that Liverpool are seemingly putting together a fairly inconsistant and very expensive team on very high wages, for WAY over market value.

Buying mostly consistant and average players is actually pretty useful, Utd had plenty of only average players in the team last year, but most were consistant.

Henderson already up to 60k a week, how much are they going to throw at Downing.

Oh well that's ok then, distinctly average player can no longer be average if Fergie and Wenger have had a look at them. After all they never buy complete and utter dross ever.

Suarez wasn't even a daglish buy, I'm sure he was looked at by the previous team before Daglish took the job.

Lets just say that when Dalglish, Ferguson and Wenger all agree on the assessment of the player I give that assessment more credence than the opinion of some anonymous nobody on an internet forums assessment of footballing talent. When 3 managers of big teams agree they want the same person I tend to think theres good reason for them wanting that person.

You don't even know that those other two managers are interested in that list of players you reeled off. Why because the sun said so. Have they made an offer?

No they didn't so far, paper talk, but if it makes you feel better buying average players to think Fergie and Wenger want them, whatever works for you.

Remind me again how much Wenger and Fergie bid for Henderson?

I can only go by what information I am given by the media. As far as I was aware from that Fergie has mentioned before that he was interested in Henderson. Equally, as much as I dont even know that those other two were interested , you also do not know that they werent interested. Works both ways. Personally it all smacks more of a haters gonna hate situation to me. When Steve Bruce says "After the match against Chelsea, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce confirmed that Sir Alex Ferguson was in contact with him over Henderson." , I have to believe it as its the only information I have. Maybe one day I will be privy to the inner thoughts of Fergie and Wenger as some seem to be, until then I can only go with what apparent info I have.

Clueless post - He scored 7 times and assisted 9 times last season for a side which struggled for the majority of the season - as many as Van Der Vaart and Charlie Adam. The previous 2 season's performance's are irrelevent - how many Premiership goals did Andy Carroll score in the 2 season's before last etc etc...zzzz.....

He's a quality player and would undoubtedly enhance Liverpool's squad as his delivery from wide areas is superb, and be a major loss to the Villa.

Sky reporting that Wenger has finally sanctioned Fabregas to go back to Barcelona

Thats an interesting one coming on the back of yesterdays rumour of a prelim deal for Fabregas between Barca and Arsenal. I have to admit that I still dont think it will happen this summer but seems to be gathering some speed anyway.

Sunderland's proposed £12m swoop for O'Shea, Brown and the lamentable Gibson licking their lips in anticipation...

The uninspiring Steve Bruce - sacked by Christmas.

Well barca have stated that they have 45mil euro transfer kitty for this summer, with more available. They are planning a clear out which should clear wage bill and add funds for transfers.

The Fabregas story is so played out it's pathetic. There is no story until Barca cough up £45-£50m. Which they won't, so he isn't going.

If Arsenal are going to sell they should just get it done. Barca may as well just offer the entire e45m and see where that gets them. That's approaching reasonable. If they're only going to offer e20m or something stupid then they should just bugger off and stop tapping up Arsenal's players.

So the fact that he's not been consistantly a great player means...... nothing?

Really every single manager buys on single season form alone? Carroll for the record looked good the previous season just not in the EPL, and most people think he was vastly vastly overpriced so not sure how that helps your argument.

Adam scored/assisted more in a side that struggled EVEN MORE than Villa, yet Adam scored against several top half teams, and scored more than half his goals away from home.

His previous seasons are VERY relevant, they paint the picture of a very inconsistant player who has struggled over 3 seasons, and this season has scored 5/7 goals at home, and what 5 of the 7 were also scored against relegation strugglers(West Brom were in shocking form and heading for relegation when he scored against them).

Are Pool looking for players that can help you win against Blackpool or the top 6 teams?

Oh, and while trying to compare keep in mind that Adam scored just over 70% MORE GOALS than Downing, and VDV even higher than that again.

So yes, you've compared him to two players who did significantly better, and not many people are desparate to throw 60-80k a week at Adam, or spend more than 12mil on him, thats whats deemed a just over average player. Vdv has proven himself many times over in many leagues, sorry but Downing isn't anywhere near VDV's level and trying to loosely suggest they did as well as each other is literally ridiculous.

Your post is completely flawed and it seems you "rate" players merely on the basis of the number of goals they score - how naiive and short-sighted.

However wonderful Van Der Vaart was until January, he was at times a virtual passenger thereafter, the same could be said of Adam, who's form tailed off dramatically after his proposed transfer window moves fell through.

The fact Van Der Vaart is at White Hart Lane and not on the bench at best at the Bernabeu is an indication if any is needed he's not the "top" bracket of players that some think he is.

On the subject of goals, as clearly this is all you can interpret, how many did Adam score from open play alone? Again, I also note that you failed to mention the season for Middlesbrough where Downing netted 9, but prefered to pick on the following two seasons where they dried up a little for him.

I would suggest you spend more time looking into the contributions players make above and beyond scoring goals.

Breaking News on SSN is that Ashley Young's representatives spoke with United yesterday

Hardly brand new information tbh

I'm sure I speak on behalf of many Villa fans who will welcome his departure, he's been a selfish, obnoxious little oik for the past couple of seasons.

Good player though.

Well I'm still not blown away by the prospect of him signing tbh, not if it means we wont address the areas of the pitch that need addressing i.e. centre midfield
