**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

Cheers guys, it's been barren for sc2 for me recently, what with the leak, moving home and the explosion I've had hardly any time! Had a good winning streak with iamtheoneneo the other day though :)

Murray, I'd suggest just playing practise league games... 50 is enough to get you understanding the basics. Even if you are then still really bad, after about 7 or 8 games on the ladder, your hidden rating will be low enough that you only play other really bad people and you will start winning games. You can do the challenges if you enjoy them but don't force yourself to and remember in practise league games, you can pause then look at the help thing to find the unit counters :) Tell your opponent before you pause though, it's only polite.

You seem to want people to suffer before they join the ladder, why should they? There are much more enjoyable ways to learn the game.

suffer? last time i checked playing sp and doing challenges and a few cusom games were actually pretty fun things to do when starting out...
this has nothing to do with the competitve scene, you have that idea not me. its about new players sticking to the game and not qutting after 5 matches as they got steam rolled bc some guy on a forum told them to jump head first in-practice league or not.

and as iv always said and more importantly proven on these forums time and time again I offer to help any new player into the game by going into matches with them etc and giving realistic help and advice that will make them lasting players and not just someone who buys the game thinks its too hard and then quits.

its not nonense at all, get wound up when people say that and I never said play 100s of cpu games.

The amount of idiots laddering at the moment is shocking, and hardly any of them have bothered to take the time to do a couple of challenges and play some vs comp to get the basics down.....the scene can not sustain this high level of stupidity.

it does not introduce new players to the game well and frankly im fed up of seeing the same post going up week after week on this and other forums about new players not understanding the very basics because some jocky has suggested they jump straight into mp and go watch day9 when they dont even know how to wall in, how much a marine costs, or what a tech lab is.

yeh amazing idea! congrats

Bit harsh really... I only learnt the basic by mass gaming. be it on Ladder, WGT, iCCup etc...

The Ladder is geared towards improvement of players. You'll find that once a player has got themselves established in a league, they will have an average of a 1:1 win/loss ratio. Best rate of improvement. Thats why there are practise games, League standings and different divisions. There is no reason not to jump straight in after you have done campaign and the challenges...

If people don't know how to wall in, the price of marines or what the tech lab does then they need to play the campaign first, It teaches a player all of those.... or even just RTFM :p

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for new players, and doing what I can to help, but at the end of the day, Its what the Ladder is for

this is the point i was making, ladder is fine when you have the basics down (real basics) but what NEW player does? none - hence my point.
its not harsh at all.

While I agree with what you said, you were a bit harsh.

People new to Starcraft probably don't understand how important the key basics are to get anywhere in ladder - playing Starcraft competitivley is a new experience to anyone who hasn't played it before as it's so demanding of thought process, reactions and macro whereas there are few other games out there that require so much. Calling them stupid isn't really fair.

I don't really understand what the issues are here. Of course you're going to get rubbish players in Bronze, you learn from viewing replays, trying things, practice. It's like saying people shouldn't play football until they've watched enough games and read about it. No one gets good at anything until they do it, a lot.

Anyone that played SC1 will know that there was no challenges, no leagues, no matching system and it still had an amazing community. What they've done in SC2 is provided easier access for everyone, and increased the community to the point where anyone can log in and get a quick match within like a minute - I think people that take for granted. Furthermore the whole point of leagues is that the "pros" can ignore the weaker players and play diamond/master players all day long, how is that not an awesome thing. Even if 5 people out of a thousand get encouraged to go all the way and maybe be good enough to be in masters/grandmasters, it further adds to the development of the game and increases the challenge for the hardcore out there.

Nail and Head come to mind :)

Very well said.

I still think people misunderstood what Idra meant by 2-0.

I think he was referring to the previous matches, not that he predicted 2-0 again.... or maybe I'm wrong ;-)

Either way its still funny

How do people build a army so quick they attack me with like 20 people and I have like 2 :(

So frustrating this is in Singleplayer BTW don't want to try online. :D

Really good game though always thought that 35 was to much but once you get it you understand why it is so much. :)

Anyone up for some games around 5ish?

I'll be online in the OcUK chat until about 1715. Just observing games and watching replays atm, so if you want to play a few I might be able to try and give you a few pointers to put you on the right track. :)

It's just what people call 'macro' though, expanding economy and building up the army. You'll find that quite small improvements can give big results.

Ok whats the OcUK chat?

I finally managed to beat the AI on very easy with P. :D

My plan is to beat each race using P on very easy then work my way up, Probably learn the race better then, Some things that are weird with Protoss though that annoys me but each class has disadvantages I suppose.

1. I can't find any ships that attack.
2. There is no one that is good from distance.
3. The pylon thing is rather annoying.

There is a few more but I can't remember what they are. :p

Edit : 4. There is not much Anti air stuff.

1. All protoss ships attack, Phoenix is purely anti air with an anti ground spell, voidrays and carriers are both air and ground.

2. Stalkers.

3. Yeah it's annoying, just remember never to have 1 pylon powering everything important.

4. Still Stalkers.
