**** Original Starcraft 2 Thread ****

I don't really understand what the issues are here. Of course you're going to get rubbish players in Bronze, you learn from viewing replays, trying things, practice. It's like saying people shouldn't play football until they've watched enough games and read about it. No one gets good at anything until they do it, a lot.

Anyone that played SC1 will know that there was no challenges, no leagues, no matching system and it still had an amazing community. What they've done in SC2 is provided easier access for everyone, and increased the community to the point where anyone can log in and get a quick match within like a minute - I think people that take for granted. Furthermore the whole point of leagues is that the "pros" can ignore the weaker players and play diamond/master players all day long, how is that not an awesome thing. Even if 5 people out of a thousand get encouraged to go all the way and maybe be good enough to be in masters/grandmasters, it further adds to the development of the game and increases the challenge for the hardcore out there.

So, so true :).

Recently I watched one of my first league games, titled "epicness" :p. Needless to say, there was absolutely nothing epic about it. I swear when I began I was the lowest of all bronze players, I kept to a good old safe ~10 drones, never expanded and must have spewed larva once or twice in the entire game. Hell, it took me about 50 games to work out that you needed a detector to kill creep tumours! Oh and I didn't know mutas could shoot air units for a fair few games.

Do I regret going on the ladder? No, not in the slightest. I could have spent hours on TL studying 'build orders' and playing custom games, but screw that! I wanted to have some fun :).

That's the position I'm in right now. I never played SC1 and only started playing SC2 recently. I'm about 50th in Bronze with 4 wins out of about 20 games. Even though I suck I'm loving it and I know I'm getting better all the time. I know my biggest weakness is my scouting and I really need to work on that aspect......I just basically forget and then wonder why my opponent roles in with air units and I have nothing to counter :D

I'll get there though. I'll never be an awesome player - I have too much "real life" stuff (job, wife, kid on way, etc) to be able to practice enough for that. If I can get promoted out of Bronze I'll consider that a massive achievement!

Really enjoying it though!

cheesed aprotoss with 6 pool..... then came us against "the exact same " same protoss again and lost to mass void ray... :P

6 pooling and then seeing blocked off terran ramp /sadface hehe

A lot of people talk about improving their scouting, but I'd have to disagree and this is without seeing any replays, but I got out of Bronze upto Gold just by focusing my macro, I didn't have at all good scouting nor micro, I had no idea about tab to cycle units or ctrl and click and I didnt bother queuing, but I just focused on using hot keys, having a build order that made sense (gas, expansions well timed) producing scvs constantly, producing scvs at expansions constantly and building unifts thoughout the game. Maybe if you just want to focus a thing at a time, but IMO, good scojuting is a hard thing to master and the sort of thing that gets you from diamond to masters, not something that will get you out bronze alone, because the other fundamental parts of your game are so lacking. That was my experience and I've seen it apply to others.

And 2 challenge missions would have told you both points.

What's the problem? Some people like to practice off-line for a while, some people like to jump in and learn as they play. It's their money so they can do what they like. You seem to act like this isn't a GAME and somehow having noobs around is costing you time and money. I don't get it. Relax a bit, maybe?

Also, you've obviously never played games that struggle to find new players to sustain the community. With the exception of WOW, I think most communities would give their right arm to have the influx of fresh meat that SC2 enjoys!

Thanks Fenris any other noob tips?

Sure, heres a few.

1. Pylons and Probes, constantly make probes, keep up with making pylons so you are never supply blocked.

2. Day9 dailies archive: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=104154

#0252 and #0261 are both great. Also have a look at all the newbie Tuesday dailies.

3. Teamliquid wiki - http://www.teamliquid.net/ loads of solid builds for each race, many certified newbie proof.

Also start a custom game against an easy AI and just build every building you can and play around with units and upgrades.

4. USE YOUR GAMES IN PRACTISE LEAGUE.

I see what you're saying. It just seems that when I lose badly it's because I didn't know my opponent was massing Void Rays or Mutas (for example) - if I had scouted better I would have seen it earlier and adjusted my strategy accordingly. Of course my game has other issues, but my problems (in my head at least...) mainly seem to stem from not knowing what my opponent is doing :)

I said "obviously" once

I haven't got the time or inclination to go back and read all your posts. If I misunderstood your argument then I apologize. It just seemed your were getting bent out of shape for no good reason.

i play zerg but over last week .. i went terran and then protoss for about 15 games in total.. on ladder(bronze) just to get feel for them, you can learn a lot messing about with other races which in turn helps understand what your scouting is showing you.

Playing some builds like Forge fast expand, destiny cloud fist, all mech, blink stalker gives you feel for how stuff works/timings etc.

My tips from zerg POV:

Go Mass upgraded roach/brrodlord vs Mech

Zerglings good vs stalkers

Infestors are pretty amazing if you can get some good micro in otherwise they die so FAST!!! and use up all your gas /cry

You dont have to go muta vs terran every game.. make 2 then watch a billion turrets go down and /giggle

6 pool works best vs protoss, beware the CheesE!

Make sentry early so when you need them they have 200/200 energy

Mix DT's into you army opponent unlikely to bring detection in big middle of map fights

Latest Problem = I can get loads of Minerals but I don't know how to spend them as Protoss whats the best things to splash on Gateways?

Depends really, zealots are a handy mineral sink, stalkers are a good way to just get rid of a whole lot of money in general.

You'll find though as you improve your macro that you'll get to a point where you're struggling to find minerals to spare.

Online now if anyone's around :)

Think it really depends on what level your playing at. Macro really ties in with scouting pretty hardcore. If you don't know what the enemy is building then your macro is going to be all wrong, unless you just get lucky a lot!.. but yeah, in general, Lower leagues you can get away with just macroing out basic T1-T1.5 units, especially with Terran/Protoss. Bit harder with Zerg as they don't have any Anti-Air untill T2 Hydras.

If you have too much money, then Expand, and wack down more production buildings, Gateways for your normal ground units.. Stargate for Air units.
