Anyone heard anything about Gervinho? I read this on Talksport (lol)

Arsenal have won the race to sign Lille striker Gervinho in a deal reportedly worth around £10million.

The Ivory Coast international had already stated his intention to leave France this summer with the Premier League his likely destination and will now complete his move to north London within the next few days.
After losing out on defender Phil Jones to Manchester United, Arsene Wenger has now fought off competition from Liverpool and Newcastle for the 24-year-old, who scored 14 league goals for the Ligue One champions last season.

With the signing of young Charlton defender Carl Jenkinson already in the bag, it is believed Wenger will now step up his interest in Blackburn skipper Chris Samba and Bolton stopper Gary Cahill as he looks to strengthen his defence.

Arsenal fans have seen Manchester United and Liverpool steal a march in the summer transfer market with moves for Phil Jones and Jordan Henderson, while Wenger is facing a fight to keep hold of influential skipper Cesc Fabregas who is again being linked with a move Barcelona and Samir Nasri who is attracting interest from the Red Devils.

I haven't seen anything about this anywhere else so I'm inclined to believe they simply made it up.

I don't think Jones, Young and De Gea would be the end of it either. I still think we'll get either Modric or Nasri, though I think Modric is more likely as I can't see Arsenal selling Nasri to United. Adding central midfielders is a priority, as next season will probably be Giggs' last, and I still have my doubts over Anderson. Has there been any further news about Sunderland's triple bid? I'd be glad to see the back of Gibson!

Anderson has the potential to be as good as he wants to be IMO. He is a quality quality player but i just wonder if he has the desire. The whole car crash and nightclubbing things when he was injured really irritated me. There was a wee spell when he came back into the side last season where i really thought he was immense but then he just disappeared again.

Nasri really shouldnt be an option but it just doesnt seem to be going away. If we are genuinely interested then Arsenal have a real decision to make. Modric just seems an impossible deal to me, at some point Spurs need to stop selling to us. I also think Sneijder is too much money so i wont be upset if his desire to stay at Inter turns out to be the end of our links with him.

The issue i have with the midfield is that i dont think any one player can solve the issues we have.

Im not sure Nasri and Modric can be mentioned in the same sentence lol.

Both would be good aquisitions - but the latter is vastly more important to Utd (if Young's deal is completed).

Personally cant see Sneijder or Modric happening this summer, and I just hope Utd dont go for a young / inexperienced "prospect" as the main targets die away

Last I heard about Sunderland's triple bid, I think Oshea especially wanted to think about moving to Wearside, the other two though are supposedly up for the move.

There seems to be a growing feeling that the story is true. He doesnt seem like a hugely inspiring signing TBH.

14 goals in the French league last season... when I think of Ligue 1 I don't immediately think of steely defence. :(

I wonder who will replace Clichy as he's bound to go to Liverpool if they've really made that £5,000,000 bid. I'd like Baines but I doubt that'll happen. Not on Wenger money anyway.

Agreed, we need a recognised midfielder with some premier league experience I think. Out of curiosity though, why do you think Modric is vastly more important to united? Do you rate him more than Nasri or just think he plays in a more suitable position? Personally I'd be happy with either of them coming to United but I can see that Modric is a proper CM whereas Arsenal seem to deploy Nasri wide left a lot.

Funnily enough, I would be most disappointed to see O'Shea go as I think he is a really useful player due to being able to play so many positions. Having said that, for every position he plays I've always thought there's somebody better than him. If United do get Jones would he be deployed at CB or RB? I don't watch Blackburn much but a friend was saying they've been playing him at RB. Surely Jones is a long-term replacement for Rio?

He just seems like a standard Wenger signing (i mean no disrespect by that). At a time when a big name would be hugely beneficial Wenger will take the £10m maybe/maybe not gamble.

Baines doesnt seem like a Wenger signing but it doesnt really matter, you can "get by" with lesser players at full back if you sort out the rest of the team.

For me, Arsenal have to decide if RVP is going to be the main man next season or not. If its felt he can be relied upon to actually stay fit then the priority should be finding someone to dovetail with him. Enough already with the "not quite winger yet not quite striker" type players IMO.

Yes Modric is a far better player than Nasri currently (now it can be argued its a harsh comparision, as Nasri is currently better as a wide player, rather than a more conventional AM which is what Modric does excellently).

Nasri has a lot of potential, but if Young signs (another wide player who has experience playing in the middle) Nasri - to Utd - becomes a nice, reasonably cheap , addition to the squad , rather than a readymade Scholes replacement - which is exactly what Sneijder / Modric would be.

OShea has been useful, but with Rafio and Evra covering the fb positions (and Smalling, Jones - if thats concluded, and Evans can also cover fb places too) , and OShea was always a disaster in midfield lol so I would be happy to see him leave for a reasonable fee. To loose a useful player while also losing a player like Gibson is always going to be good deal for all Utd fans lol

Jones and Smalling will hopefully be Utd and England CB's of choice in a few years

Jones is a cb by trade. Smalling is more likely to get games at rb tbh.

Smalling is more experienced in general and at Utd - and after how he played last season, I cant see how a guy two years younger will automatically go straight in ahead of him (however good Jones is for his age). Also I cant see how Raf / Fab will not take up majority of right full back games to start with

late edit - of course it could just depend on which of Rio / Vidic needs to be replaced in the centre for that game lol

Indeed. RVP has to be the main man, Chamakh might be able to work alongside him but Wenger needs to decide on a system. If he's going to play 1 up front then we need better wingers than we currently have, no idea what's going on at the moment.

If the Nasri thing became possible it would almost be worth doing regardless of what we were going to do with him! I dont see it happening for the very reason why it would be so good if it did - you dont tend to be able to take major players from rivals for anything other than crazy money.

Id be sad to see O'Shea go. Rick has been a good servant and often come in for unfair stick but hes the type of versatile player who can "do a job" 15-20 times a season and is the difference between winning and losing titles. However, as you say, the young players have the same versatility and really they are the future.

Chamakh is a total mystery to me. What happened????? Start of the season i though he was going to do exactly what you needed.....big guy up front. Then he turned into a mouse and......nothing.

What with Sneijder now committing himself to Inter, Modric seemingly only for sale for 40-50m (which I doubt we'd pay) and Nasri still unlikely to be sold to us I'd honestly be happy just getting Rodwell signed up in the midfield area to conclude this summers transfers tbh

Modric or Nasri would be lovely but just cant see either happening

He did very well at the start of the season, around the time RVP came back to fitness he was just left on the bench quite a lot. He's always a threat though I think, even if he doesn't score he's in amongst it, plus I'm willing to be lenient as it was his first season, adapting and all that.

The Adam rumour seems to be from twitter. Claimed source is Ian McGarry (BBC).

From what I've been able to make out over the last few weeks, I think the Adam deal has been done for a while now and is just waiting to be finalised/announced due to Adam being on holiday in Dubai.

@garbosj
Ian McGarry
Ashley Young given assurances over game time and position by #MUFC. Hence likely he will choose there and not #LFC. Adam deal done to #LFC

I suspect i may be made to eat my words but i dont see the fuss TBH.

Liverpool will have spent around £60m and got Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam.

I like Carroll and Henderson as players but if you gave Liverpool fans £60m last summer im sure these players wouldnt have made their top 100 wish list.

I'm frankly happy to HAVE £60m to throw on players, after years of having to scrape the proverbial barrel with the odd £10m player , its nice to now have cash to chuck (of which I think we have PLENTY more yet)

To me Rodwell is one of those players who we would regret not signing later even if he seemed overpriced at the time (a bit like Jones in that respect). At a big club with better players i think he will be big and i think a bigger club will push him into being an international.

diaby needs a slap

I hope that Diaby along with Denilson and a few others are shipped out of Arsenal this summer...the sooner we are rid of those 2 muppets the better i say.
