What film did you watch last night?

Super 8

Completely not what I expected, but it was still pretty awesome.

The 80's setting was beautiful and the comedic elements surprised me. To some extent though I felt the script seemed a little 'under-developed', another 20 or so minutes was needed to be honest.

Still, it was fun! And when I say fun I mean fun, I was expecting a dark twisty sci-fi-ish thriller majig, but it turned out 'fun'.

8/10

X-Men: First Class.

I enjoyed it, though a couple of the characters were a bit naff and I didn't like their fight near the end.

7.5/10

I have just received Paul & True Grit. Looking forward to them this weekend.

Didnt even know this was out yet!

I'm still working through my Daily Star top ten to being a movie critic list - cheers for the tipoff ~>DG<~ - so I've just watched Seven Samurai. I split it over two nights as it's 3 hours long so a bit of a slog. It's good, but it's heavy going... picture quality isn't great, and the subtitles are a bit sporadic, so from time to time there's things being said without any indication of what it all means.

I'm sure there's a lot of value to be found in there, but it's hard work looking for it.

Still, entertaining enough.

Did you watch the Criterion Blu-ray or another version. Picture quality on the Criterion is superb for a film that age and it's got remastered subtitles as well. Personally think it's a fantastic movie.

Just the DVD. I think I might have enjoyed it more with better subtitles at least, and better picture quality wouldn't have hurt!

Shutter Island.

Really, really, enjoyed this! Wasn't what I was expecting at all. Easily the best performance I've seen from DiCaprio - especially the lighthouse scenes at the end.....I really felt for him. Also one of those films that makes you want to watch it again straight away after everything has been revealed - you remember bits from earlier in the film and you're like "ohhhhh, I see what they did there!" :)

9/10 from me. Not having read any spoilers (or even any reviews) really helped.....wish I could do that ALL the time!

Paul.

Very funny.

8/10

8.5/10

awesome, been waiting a long time to watch this and finally got around to it with the missus tonight. awesome comedy and paul just makes the film, definitely has another watch in it with the same kind of enjoyment of a fresh watch

Johny mnemonic, 7.5/10

gotta love the retro, i do like keanu, as plane and emotionless as his acting is he doesn't over stretch with his roles, he plays the parts that fit or he makes them fit and for that he entertains me plus classic sci-fi always rocks

Not specifically last night but we've watched a few films over the past few nights:

1) Hanna: I really enjoyed and thought it was a brilliantly directed movie with an outstanding performance from Saoirse Ronan who is only 17 years old
No spoilers from me but I'd give it 8/10 and would hope to see this young lady in a few more good movies soon :)

2) The Silver Streak (1976): I admit I'd never heard of this one before but was assured by my OH it was good. Starred Gene Wilder and the late great Richard Pryor also starring Mr James Bond's Jaws - Richard Keil. I can only assume that the sands of time has erased the comedy aspect from this movie as it was an hour and a half of my life I'll never get back - 2/10 :(

3) The Adjustment Bureau: with (insert Team America voice) Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. To be honest the only reason I continued to watch this far fetched romp all the way through was the sexy Mrs Blunt. Definitely not one I'd recommend, I can only assume Mr Damon is struggling for options after his Bourne trilogy - 4/10 :(

And Finally:

4) Paul: which we both thought was brilliant. Lots of original funny parts, well acted out, good effects, lots of cameo effects (music, dialogue etc etc) too. Though I admit you'd have to be a real geek to get all of them (sadly I did) though I had to explain a few to my OH :o 8/10

Still to watch is Paul Bettany' new movie Preist and the classic 1968 Ice Station Zebra :D

far fetched, what isnt these days, id hardly use that as a critique for a film, actually thought it was a damn good film, for a film shot in 09 i think its a bloody good show!

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole

This film is the best looking BR I've ever seen by quite a margin. Truly jaw dropping visuals at times, the amount of detail on the owls is worth watching the film for alone. The DTS Master audio is a thumper awsell. Shame the film isn't quite as epic as it looks... or sounds. I'm going to watch it again to give it another chance, for some reason the story just didn't grab me.

Movie: 7/10
Audio: 9/10
Visuals: 11/10

A benchmark movie if ever I saw one, if you want to show off your home cinema kit or new TV to friends then this is the BR to do it with :)

Yeah I've edited the whole post so it actually makes sense now... I've had a few glasses of the old vino tonight :)

It's not that the film is bad, it just gets going very quickly and doesn't give you enough time to learn much about the main characters. So it's kind of hard to care what happens to them.

Still a must see though imho.
