Now's the time for Tottenham Hotspur to decide what sort of club they want to be.

Do we drop our pants at every club that comes calling with a chequebook, or do we take a firm stance with our key players and fend off interest?

We should be looking at the Fabregas situation at Arsenal.

Difference's between the Fabregas situation and Modric's is that Fabregas had stronger ties to Arsenal than Modric does to Spurs and Arsenal are/were in a much stronger financial position.
No you shouldnt

Thats the perfect example of a club getting it wrong. Is he worth more than he was 12 months ago?

Sell when the offer is best.

Modric is flavour of the month, max out his price.
Are you suggesting Fabregas is worth less now than he was last summer? If so, he's not.

Just read on the CAF that story about Modric wanting to join Chelsea, to say it has ruined my evening would be an understatement.

Hope Spurs stay strong.... that is unless we show interest and Luka declares he wants to join us...

Turning out to be a ****y day, what with this and the rumours that City have grabbed Sanchez (even if we dont need him)

Surely he's worth less now? He's had a less impressive season and his contract has 1 year less than it did.

Maybe chelsea could offer drogba to spurs as part of the deal. Might work out well for all?

He is not worth any more than last year and he has hardly been a huge influence on Arsenal in the last season. Actually, yeah, he is worth less than he was last season cos he was coming off the back of playing well last season.

The issue remains the same. He wants to go to Barca and they dont want to spend much on him. The problem is there is one bidder so therefore one price.

Obertan looks awesome in the reserves too. It doesnt make him a great player or even a potentially good player.

People look for signs of hope simply because he is our player.

If Obertan or indeed Bebe were playing for the reserve/youth/ any other team of a rival club would you be saying "sign him up" or even "keep an eye out for him"??

Its just hope over expectation.

I never said it did make him or them good or great players. If he was at another club then fans probably wouldn't be saying sign him up. But at the end of the day he IS a united player for whatever reason. There is apparently some nugget of talent there that warranted them being signed and kept at the team. Bebe is being made out to be no better than someone from division 2 when quite clearly he has shown something to the staff the got him some first team appearances when others disn't.

It's like all the crap when Park signed that it was only for financial reasons to boost shirt sales in Asia. I'm sure it was in the mind of the board but he works his nuts off and has scored some important goals. No he isn't a great player but he does a job and gets regular football in a side that has won leagues and appeared in several CL finals.

Bebe and Obertan may well end up being nothing like United players. I just think judging Bebe so fast isn't being fair on the kid considering what he has come from. That doesn't get him a free pass to be at united and it won't if he is crap at Besiktas, I just don't get what people were expecting from him. If he had arrived for 200k would peoples opinions be the same?

Good point.

Modric has said he won't put in a transfer request out of "respect", but I can't see this going any other way now if those quotes are accurate.

Prices are more inflated now than then and he's still Arsenal's star player and Arsenal still aren't in a position where they have to sell him.

He's got plenty of time left on his contract so Arsenal still hold all the cards.

If i was being harsh i would suggest that Modric is the attacking midfielder who doesnt score goals.

He is also an attacking midfielder who has created very few goals.

I like him as a player but if we are talking anywhere near £30m then we have Darron Gibson who can already not score goals and not set them up from an attacking midfield position and he costs nohing.

Like you said this is where Spurs need to prove they're not a selling club, Ronaldo made it clear to us he wanted to join Real Madrid but we stood firm (for a year anyway), Arsenal have done likewise with Fabregas when he made it clear he wanted to go to Barca

Spurs need to tell Modric to shut up and get his head down and concentrate getting Spurs back into the top 4

I say all that even though I want Spurs to do the exact opposite should our interest in here become reality :o

Only because he hasnt forced the issue.

And there's no indication that he will force the issue now.

Barca were offering ~£30m for Fabregas last summer, Arsenal would have been mad to sell him for that. He may not have played as well as previous seasons but he still had a better season than 9 out of 10 midfielders and Arsenal can still get far more than £30m for him.

In what world were they wrong not to sell him?

What he does have though is brilliant ball retention and the ability to dictate from midfield, those two aspects of which are completely lacking from any of the current Man Utd midfielders

Basically if we add Modric to our midfield the rest of the league wouldn't stand a chance IMO
