****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Mate, you can't be this dim surely?

At the end of your contract you OWN the phone, you can do what the hell you like with it, you can even go on PAYG if you want, or even sell it to one of the many places that buy them.

You cannot compare this to renting as only a small portion of the total monthly payment is actually a rental payment. (Line rental is usually circa 7-15 quid a month depending your tariff.) If you want most mobile companies will just charge you for line rental alone if you don't want a phone.

The rest is going towards your eventual purchase of the phone as these things are EXPENSIVE, but your mentality seems to not be allowing you to place a perceived value to it.

If you were to buy an S2 they are currently about £450-500 on the net to buy outright.

he does not get it... he's thinks its like temp employment, were if you 'win' a 2 year fixed contract it is much better than getting 1 year...

I've not read all the above post on the matter, and i'm not going to either.

But when your comparing a 24 month contract with a 12 month contract for total cost then you should really also add the additional 12 months of network usage on top of the 12 month deals, whether that be 12 months of sim only or payg, etc.

So if you were to use a sim only deal costing you £10 a month for 12 months that's an additional £120 on top of the 12 months deal.

Therefore for example - 24 x £30 = 720 or (12 x £40) + (12 x £10) = £600

To be honest though, i don't thing like that at all, i choose the cheapest 18 month deal knowing that i'll probably end my contract early when the next wave of smartphones comes out in 12-18 months time, as i've done the last 3 contracts (in fact my SGS only lasted 8 months into an 18 month contact)

Anyway....

I updated the firmware on my SGSII last night via Kies, now running KF3.

Had an issue last night with the battery usage, went to bed with the battery reading 89% woke up this morning to see that it was on 60%. Anyone else had this issue?

I've not done a factory reset yet, and it's not had a full charge cycle since the update, would any of these help.

Battery life was great before the update.

But if you take out a new contract after 12 months, you get a new phone, sell your old one, and can benefit from another cashback deal.

There are no ways around it, the 12 month deal is FAR superior to the 24 month one.

Yeah i agree, and this is exactly what i did/do, no way would i ever keep a phone for 24 months. The sale of my SGS paid for the remaining 10 months of my contract, new phone cost me £20, but got £30 cashback. Monthly cost are the same, but for 18 month (contract length) instead of the remaining 10 months on my old contract.

But some people do and in that case comparing a 12 month deal to a 24 month deal isn't as straight forward as total cost over the full term of the contract.

the talkmobile deal has increased in price today! it's now £119 for the handset... extra £20

what is talkmobile 3g coverage like in general?

+ 1 darryl

I see sukh point.

Don't forget that the majority of people don't have "OMG MUST HAVE EVERY NEW MOBILE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE" OCD :p

Even so, the 12 month is still cheaper if you switch to a £10 rolling for another 12 months.

£30 x 12 = £360
+£99
-£30
= £429

After the 12 months, you can either:

Switch to a £10 tariff for 12 months. (Giff Gaff, 250 mins, unltd texts, unltd data)
Total spend after 24 months is £550, and you have a 2 year old phone

or

Take out the contract again for another 12 months, but sell the new phone.

£429 - say £350 for the phone, is £80 for another 12 months.
Total spend after 24 months is £510, and you have a 2 year old phone.

Worst case scenario is still £50 cheaper than going for 24 month deal, best case is £90 cheaper.

You have to crunch the numbers if you want to get the most from a mobile and contract.

Right never mind all this contract rubbish, here's how to make an iphone user jealous. :p I popped into my bank to open another account specifically to insure the phone. The guy dealing with me owns the iphone 4, HTC Desire and another phone. He asked me what phone and I showed him. He said "don't you think it's a bit big?" I said you get used to it but it's so thin and light and slides into my pocket. I showed him how the phone talks to me if I want it to do something, to which he was impressed, but when I showed him swype he was really excited, calling his colleague over to show him. He could only get swype for his iphone if it was jailbreaked or cydia, or something.

He only just got his iphone a month ago but now he wants the SGS2. He admitted he's jealous of me. As he showed me out I said "you're just going to have to buy a fourth phone" :D

I mentioned earlier that I installed VillainROM 2.0 (Droid 2.3.4) without wiping, well now I’d recommend people do wipe as I noticed over the last 48 hours that the phone was feeling a bit sluggish could not find out why so wiped data/cache via CWM recovery and restored y Titanium and MBP backups and now it’s as fast as ever again.

I think some core components must have been lying around from 2.3.3 as the dev says the whole core base has changed so they recommend a wipe even though one is not needed.

Ordered a SGS II this morning, curious to get my hands on it in the next few days (been using an Orange San Francisco up till now). Is there an all-encompassing guide for newcomers or is it all scattered around the XDA forum? (Yeah, I should probably look a bit more myself but thought to ask anyway in case somebody can recommend a good 2.3.4 ROM and how to get it on the new phone)

Got to agree with that, I decided to flash the full XXKG1 package which wiped the phone. I backed up my XWKF3 configuration and restored the data after the update and a lot refused to work right. Had to wipe the Dalvik cache and reset app data then reconfigure accounts before some things would work.

Battery life seems to be slightly improved, the phone still feels about the same speed but now there is the option to set how long after screen time out you want to lock the screen. At least I don't have the problem of reduced audio output on this firmware :D

So im getting onge deliverd soon, didnt think i would move away from the Desire HD so quick but it really starts to grate after a while, especially the poor camera and video recording.

Lolol that argument went on for a while.

I will say this, I understand your point completely, you like having the newest best phone.

For me, my decision makes sense, I like to buy a phone and use it, and don't like the hassle of switching things around a lot. So 24 months at the lowest cost per month is what I look for.

I know your response is going to be:

a) New phones are cool, why not get one if you can for 'free'
b) Switching phones is no hassle.
c) Look at this combination of buying and selling phones that works out favourable, good for you.

People are different and look for different things.

I was arguing that you can't compare total cost using the methodology you suggested.

Lastly, I think your name calling is deplorable and is more telling more about your character than anything else.

Lets talk about phones :)
