I'd add Any Carroll to that list as well.

I don't actually mind the Carroll one, the fee was circumstantial more than anything and I quite rate Carroll and he has many many years ahead of him. But for 20m , with downings age and with no pressure to buy I think we could have gone elsewhere and got someone younger with comparable abilities.

He is pretty much a guaranteed performer at premiership level though.
I would say they paid over the odds certainly, but he is hardly 'over the hill'. Still has years of solid service ahead of him, i would say.

He has never really been the quickest player in the world, so losing pace won't be a massive concern, especially as he is a very good crosser

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying he is over the hill, just that for 20m I would rather we had spent it on someone at the lower 20s of age than the upper 20s of age.

Has he learnt the ability to cross because he was dog **** at it at Boro...

Why is everyone saying he can cross? He seems the master of the cut in and pass 5 yards when I saw him for Villa.

If OptaJoe was right when he said that Downing created more chances than any player from open play in the Premier League over the last 3 years, then he must have improved his crossing.

edit: and the Modric transfer request stuff looks like being reported in all the rags now.

Will be interesting to see who we turn our attention to next. Wonder if we will go for a right winger now or focus now on the left back position. Or maybe turn the focus to a centre back.

I'll hold judgement then until I see him in the red again

I'd imagine we'll be shifting a few players out before we make another meaningful signing.

Once the likes of Jones, Soto, Insua, Poulsen, Jovanovic, Cole and Aquilani go then I'd imagine our main priorities would be a left back then centre back, and then if Ngog leaves, a striker. We might sign another attacking midfielder/winger if Meireles leaves but I'd say it's an outside chance at best.

The season before he joined Villa he was strongly linked with us but I wasn't keen on him. He does seem to have improved a lot in the couple of seasons at Villa though.

He just never bothered crossing when he was at Boro, he would beat the fullback, look up and see Afonso Alves or Mido or Alliadiere in the middle and think "ah **** it. What's the point:p

So looking likely that we will keep Kuyt on the right wing? Pity, I was hoping we might get an out and out right winger. Maybe see if we could pluck Adam Johnson from city for example. Definitely think left back should be the next target, there aren't many decent left backs available and what ones there are , are being bought up so I don't think we can wait too long unless there is someone totally under the radar lined up.

I don't think we're going to play with 2 out and out wide players. I think the most likely formations we'll play will be 4-3-3 with 2 of Downing, Kuyt, Suarez and Maxi playing in the wider forward roles, 4-2-3-1 choosing from the same players + Gerrard and Meireles for the 3 positions off of the striker or a 4-4-2 with Henderson or Meireles playing tucked in on the right hand side, like Houghton used to play and like Meireles played at times last season.

So whats Liverpools starting line up for next season?

___________Reina
Johnson__Carragher__Agger__J.Enrique?
____Henderson_Gerrard_Meireles
Suarez___________________Downing
___________Carroll

Looks decent, but I still believe Spurs have a better team and thats not taking into account that Man United, Chelsea, City and Arsenal are favorites for the top 4.

I don't think we're going to sign Enrique and I'd be very surprised if Lucas wasn't one of the first names on the teamsheet. If we were going to play 4-3-3 I'd guess our first 11 (based on who we actually have) would be:
------------Reina
Kelly---Carra--Agger---Johnson
------------Lucas
-------Gerrard--Adam
-Suarez---------------Downing
-----------Carroll

I think that's better than anything Spurs could put out I think your side is better than anything Spurs could put out too though.

Kuyt dropped entirely from the first 11 then?

I'm actually not sure we will even have a first 11 as such, I think there will be quite a lot of rotation, I can envisage 3 or 4 players changing almost weekly.
