** Summer Transfer Window 2011/12 Season Rumours/Signings **

Can't help thinking we've missed a great opportunity this year, first time in ages we have been able to spend a decent amount and we buy mediocre players and generally not in positions where we need improvement

Any different to what Utd did and do? Just they aren't the biggest fish in the pond financially now.

What Utd did was always financially viable from a company point of view - what City are doing is relying on dodgy /way over priced deals to balance the books on all the over priced transfers / horrifically high wages they promise :)

As there are only four things to win it sort of goes again you. And it's 'didn't' win. New season new chance. Anyone who says arsenal don't have a chance of winning something needs to switch to a different sport.

Despite our recent record we have a better than most chance of winning something. If teams spend £100m then obviously their chances will increase but that doesn't mean arsenal won't win anything.

Until Arsenal sort out a winning mentality within the team then they will continue to have days like the CC final last season (against, lets face it, a pretty average EPL team) and end of seasons like they had a couple of months ago.

Undoubtedly Arsenal will continue to win individual games , even headliners like against Barca and Utd. But when the crunch comes Arsenal just dont "man up". This is why Utd, Chelsea (and I wish I didnt have to admit this) City will be (much) more likely to win when the major honours come around

If AW spent reasonably well on 2 or 3 "winners" then Arsenal would have a much more successful time of it, but if he continues to buy youthful prospects there is little chance imo

The players we've bought may not be the most exciting signings but realistically who could have we signed? Without CL football it's made it incredibly difficult to attract big name players from Europe.

Of our 3 main signings, Henderson's the only 1 that I would say wasn't an immediate necessity however he's seen as a long-term signing whose versatility will prove handy in the short-term too. There was a definite need for another CM and as I mentioned in the pre-season thread, Adam provides us with something different to what we have and the day we signed Carroll our priority had to be to sign a wide player that will provide him with crosses, which Downing does.

The remaining areas that need improvement aren't so straight foward either. If you take LB for example; with both Kelly and Johnson being more than capable of playing there, the likelihood that we won't be able to shift Aurelio and with Robinson's emergence, unless the right player comes along then it's not worth signing a LB just for the sake of it. It's a similar story at CB too; there's no point signing a CB unless he's either a significant improvement on Agger/Carra/Skrtel or he's a very promising youngster.

I've got a query. Could Tevez just leave man city and head for south America and never return and just play for Corinthians anyway? If he did, what could City actually do about it once he's there?

Does FIFA have jurisdiction and if they do, what's the most they could do to a Brazilian team?

I think we need a long term LB and a long term CB. We've been weak at LB for a while now and could do with getting someone into that position who has several years in a red shirt in him but carries some experience. CB, although we have Agger/Carra/Skrtel, Agger is likely to be out injured on more than one period in the season, Carra is getting on now and frankly if he becomes any slower he is in danger of replacing the goalpost and Skrtel either saves you a goal or lunges in like a Mongol and gives away a penalty. Would like to see us go for another CB, someone along the lines of Mertesacker, Shawcross or Dann.

If we have any signings left in us this summer, I'd like to see some addressing of LB and/or CB. RM would be an added bonus and might as well throw in some unknown as well....maybe someone like Honda. ;)

He could but then City would tear him apart in court for failure to adhere to/complete his contract.
I imagine FIFA would block his registration and so he would not be able to play.

Would certainly be fun to see it go to court though.
He either pays out the rest of his contract (200k pw? x 52 x 3) or we are paid a transfer fee by Corinthians.

a lot of rumours saying Liverpool have bid £9million for Aly Cissokho. Not sure how reliable the sources are but I think we've looked at him in the passed. Haven't seen him play a lot and hope he's not another Djimi Traore.

certainly the purchase of Carroll made a winger necessary but Downing is nowhere near good enough

I would argue Adam is more important then Downing.
Most of Carroll's * headed goals for Newcastle come from deep 'almost-crosses' from Barton, the kind of ball we saw Charlie play 3-4 times in the first half today.

Similar to the ball Meireles played for him during the City game.

Who would you have been looking at instead of him though? There are very few wingers that stay wide and look to put crosses into the box these days and with Carroll in the side, that's what we need.

We've been linked with the likes of Mata, who's an excellet player in his own right but he wouldn't solve the Carroll problem. I honestly can't think of a better winger, in relation to our needs, than Downing that we could have realistically signed.

Weren't Utd debt free and the owners buy the club by mortgaging the club they never owned? Something like that lol

That doesn't sound dodgy lol

But yes a few experienced heads dotted around wouldn't go amiss.

Still time to go yet. I think Wenger used up his last cheque, maybe he has ordered a new cheque book. ;)

It seems to have stemmed from lots of other sites saying deal is done and be announced by tomorrow or Monday, Doubt its the case though as dont think any of the sources are reliable.

He's probably still bidding for Mata. He had his £15,000,000 bid turned down so he's just offered £15,000,001. Or something. :p

I wouldn't be surprised if this was to be Wenger's most important season. He'll get everything his way, keeping Nasri and Fabregas, get players in that he's after, and if he doesn't bring about some sort of measurable success at the end of the season, he's given the boot.

Yeah I would certainly go all out and say ef it! And spend £80m lol
