Personally I think Downing is a good buy for Liverpool.

Liverpool's big problem as I see it has been a lack of width, if you buy someone like Carroll you want players putting ball in the box for him, and Downing does just that. In the past three seasons he completed 135 crosses which is more than ANY player has done in the Premiership. He's an improvement on anyone they could play left wing already at the club.

It's quite fashionable to knock Downing but I think he is a decent player, not only is he a proven crosser of the ball but he also has two good feet, he can deliver shots and passes with his right boot as well.

Is he worth the £19m or whatever Liverpool paid, only time will tell. I think he was a better, more needed buy than say Henderson.

Weren't Utd debt free and the owners buy the club by mortgaging the club they never owned? Something like that lol

That doesn't sound dodgy lol

Its called a Leveredged Buy-Out, and whether people in general like it or not its not uncommon in take-overs, and I believe Liverpool was taken over this way as well (although by no means to the same extent as Utd).

At one point the EPL were going to try and ban this kind of take-over but Im not sure how far these discussions were taken (or even if they are still progressing).

For the time-being it seems like the EPL (and fans of the same) are stuck with this issue:)

I wouldn't be surprised if this was to be Wenger's most important season. He'll get everything his way, keeping Nasri and Fabregas, get players in that he's after, and if he doesn't bring about some sort of measurable success at the end of the season, he's given the boot.

It will take a miracle for real success, the 2 first games have been depressing to say the least. Same defensive errors, same complete lack of RVP being able to lead the team on his own, same ridiculous strikers as wingers, Nasri in the middle was truly another woeful first half performance. Wilshire came in and turned the team around by actually being controlling in midfield.

The ickle Japanese kid seems surprisingly good, but thats almost exactly why I intend to see a season of Wenger not playing him and talking about protecting him a bit, for no apparent reason.

I really don't know what people expect, its NOT the players, its Wenger, and his tactics/idea's/lack of change. The defence doesn't work not due to defensive errors, but due to this ridiculous system we play. Djourou consistantly pushes up and gets caught out with rubbish reading of the game while Sagna plays everyone onside repeatedly.

RVP simply can not and hasn't for 2 years been capable of leading the line as a lone striker, spent half his time on the pitch today around the half way line, which he did in every tough game last year. Nasri, inept trying to "run " the team in Cesc's role.

Its a friendly and Song commited a bunch of fouls and got away with a bunch, though his passing has been improved, not all of it but he's pinging around long passes which he rarely used to do. If only he still wasn't utterly useless defensively, and slow in attack and choosing the wrong people to pass too.

Our system, our tactics, our starting line up need to change before bringing in anyone will make any difference at all, yes its only 2 preseason games but, theres not been the slightest hint of change, let alone improvement.

Who would you have been looking at instead of him though? There are very few wingers that stay wide and look to put crosses into the box these days and with Carroll in the side, that's what we need.
.

don't watch enough non UK football to know what alternatives are out there but I have seen very little from Downing to say that he is anywhere near good enough, hopefully I will be proven wrong

As there are only four things to win it sort of goes again you. And it's 'didn't' win. New season new chance. Anyone who says arsenal don't have a chance of winning something needs to switch to a different sport.

Despite our recent record we have a better than most chance of winning something. If teams spend £100m then obviously their chances will increase but that doesn't mean arsenal won't win anything.

Arsenal have competed for a while now and they continually haven't won anything. I don't think this team is far away from winning things but I think Arsenal need to strengthen in defence / goal. They haven't as of yet.

Related news; Arsenal's Manager Wenger has had a dig at the City manager according to Sky over the Nasri rumours.

I think the main issue is there aren't many other alternatives. Like I said, there's very few players around these days that play in the way Downing does. Admittedly I only watch bits and pieces of European football but I genuinely can't think of anybody that does what we need as well as Downing; there certainly isn't any standout players that would excite the supporters - although I suspect there are some that would be much happier simply if Downing had an 'o' on the end of his name.

Had we not signed Carroll I wouldn't have even considered Downing as a wide option for us but his qualities (as limited as some say they are) compliment that of the players we currently have.

Sometimes it's not about the individual ability but how well they work together. You'll know better than me but the 87 side was if not our greatest ever side, it was certainly our best attacking side, yet how many of the midfield and attack from that side would have got into the side of the early 80s? Barnes and maybe 1 of Molby or Whelan?

I honestly am still in shock that Downing has become a player in a top club. Admittedly I didn't see him play last year but I used to go to boro a lot to watch them and he was ****.

I honestly can't believe the direction Kenny has spunked the best part of £60 million. I hope I'm wrong and he does good things but the whole things reeks of being given 100 million and getting it spent asap.

And there was me thinking Liverpool has a good youth academy that was going to bring players on Barcelona style and kenny has spent more than the cost of the whole barca team ;)

I hope I'm wrong and he does good things

You ****ing liar :p

I heard Everton are looking at Parker, not sure if it's a rollerball or fountain though :p

We'll happily take Baines off you so you can afford to loan a couple of players. He'll certainly be up for the move being a boyhood red and all.

Leicester have made a new £4m bid for Yakubu. I hope it gets accepted, he and Yobo are not going on pre-season tour to the USA. Maybe because of Visa problems, but I hope it's because of impending transfers.

We were by Hicks and co. The current owners paid cash (the only debt we have left is stuff we cant get rid of yet ..)

certainly the purchase of Carroll made a winger necessary but Downing is nowhere near good enough

Didn't he get the second the second highest amount of crosses this season.
I don't understand why so many people dislike Downing hes good at what he does he may not be game changing on his own but is certainly a good player to have in a team especially when linking up with another england international can only be a good thing surely?

I agree

With the likes of downing, henderson, Gerrard and Carroll all playing together it can, hopefully, work out better for England too as the chemistry will be better and know each others games

sorry I should have indicated it was the previous Liverpool take-over :)

Exxcept they wont play the same with the English shirt on (not just Liverpool players it has to be said)

Scrap the whole , certainly majority, of the senior England team (including Gerrard - which would only benefit Liverpool) and concerntrate the selections on the U21 squad (and htere would still be healthy competition in a number of places, I guess mostly midfield though)

A Liverpool blog which I would suggest would try and show the player in the best possible light says Downing has a cross completion rate of 24%, one of the lowest in the league, for a winger anyway.
It also says he has a pass completion rate of less than 70%.
He is however quite accurate in his shooting.

He has never, at any point in his career shown he is any kind of stand out player.
