But see carrick is neither attacking or defensive, he's just an inbetweener. this means whoever you partner him with.cannot be too offensiver nor too defensive. of course not helped by fketcher being overly defensive in positive attributes (our only vaguely defensive midfielder i might add). forcing the other more attacking options to fo more defending than attacking work - like anderson.

Cleverly is far too lightweight for us to even consider playing gim in a 2 man center spot too..

End result being a toothless midfiekd who cannot grab a game and look like they arent even there- see cl final.

Infact even though we beat cheksea 2-1 at ot in the cl qdmf we actually only had 48% posession. im unable to find the data but thats.probably a familiar story across chelsea/arsenal/barca games against man utd...

Well that is the quandry, stick to.a roughly sucessful system that employs carrick plus another in a floating neither overtly attacking or defensive midfield or accept that it doesnt work vs the better opponents and rip that plan up and start again.

Carrick plus hargreaves worked at least in idea. it wont work if you replace the OH element with anderson or even fletcher because neither are so good as.hargreaves defensively with a capacity to also pass a.ball or vice versa. ultimately we had a 36 million hangover that was waiting to be cured it was torn up instead...

Good to see the gervinho deal finally finalised! Look forward to watching him in pre-season! :)

Yeah I have to say that I am pretty excited. For all of the talk of needing this and that, it's always nice to watch a new attacking player. Hopefully the competition for places he brings has the right effect on others.

If Nasri and Fab stay and there are no injuries then we will be spoilt rotten for attacking options in the coming season.

which better opponents did it not work against? Because it worked a treat in a champions league semi finals and in 3 games against Chelsea. Fact is for most games what we have is good enough, a midfield 2 at OT of Carrick and Anderson/Giggs will see off most teams.

Tactically Fergie did get it wrong in some games last season IMO, I think we got carried away with the form of Hernandez and thus sacrificed a midfielder to keep him in the team despite against Arsenal for example getting the tactics spot on against them for god knows how many games in a row previously. Against Barca in hindsight we should have matched them up and threw an Anderson or Fletcher into midfield instead of playing 2 up front, it possibly wouldn't of made a difference but then again I doubt having Sneijder in there would have made a difference either.

Well i mean we beat chelsea by the skin of our teeth in some respects. you dont lose on posession at home if you are dominating the.match. the truth is that we have fast talented players and as sych benefit from quick breaks like we did with chelsea. watch ourbest goals vs arsenal from a year or so ago - its ronaldo running 50 yards and rooney - not a precise 50 pass move built by carrick. we avoid and skip.our centre midfield area on the ball and throw it to our wingers or 30 million £strikers instead.

games our midfield was outplayed - barca, liverpool - both games? City fa cup? Chelsea. basically just look at our percent posession even when we have won.

Im sure we even struggled to get a grip vs blackpool one half even wigan!

Sneijder isnt too defensively minded.

So because we surrendered possession when in wining positions it means we won by the skin of our teeth? And we did that 3 times against Chelsea? :o

Gilly rough translation : carrick is not a competant combative defensive midfielder. he's also not very attacking either.

therefore you cant pair him with somone who.is overly attack minded because then we simply have no.ball winner or teeth in centermidfield. so you have to pair him with someone who can tackle and pass. fletcher isnt creative but can tackle a bit, anderson is creative but cant tackle all that well. this is the problem of having too many one dimensional players and half way houses like carrick.

it often means we need 3x cm's to do the job that perhaps 2 otherwise world class mids could have done. it has been like this for years.

unless we sign.a tackling passer like big masch and an attacking minded like sneijder we will always be bested by other teams for central midfield players. thats why you see vidic or rio.punt it long - hoping for a defensive header fall right to our attackers feet. we score so many goals by opponent lapses it isnt even funny. rarely if ever do we control a game by way of our central midfoeld.

We dont even have the option to though and how exactly does sneijder slot in right next to carrick? He just doesnt as part of a 442 system.

Owen hagreaves plus carrick.was.meant to win. you can even add OH and anderson and it just works. Sadly this isnt jow it turned out and we were left with a non tackling midfielder instead who you cant really pair an attackibg midfielder with comfortably.

my view is we need a def mid. not another attacking one as that doesnt address the flaw in the systen.
