Young is known for his set piece play you're correct. 2 years ago Villa scored more set piece goals than anyone else and he was the taker in most occasions.

That said I haven't been blown away by Young on the USA Tour, although the stats suggest he does get his fair share of assists having seen him now for United (albeit very briefly) I wonder how many of those at Villa were from open play, as him cutting in on his right and putting crosses into the keeper really requires someone running across the near post. Hernandez might well make those runs but none of the strikers who have been on the tour have.

Hopefully when the real games start Fergie will opt to switch Young and Nani 3/4 times in a game like we did when Ronaldo was at the club because at the moment Young being solely on the left is far too one dimensional keep cutting in on his right all the time, Nani on the other hand is quite comfortable with both his left and his right

Totally wrong, stats aside ask any Villa fan Ashley young's delivery from set pieces for the past 2 seasons have been awful. Yes he is our best player and we are going to miss him but he is nowhere near known for his set piece play. you sound like you don't know a lot about him so ill fill you in, Young is best when hes running at the fullback and cutting in delivery deadly crosses, he will be better than Nani or Valencia given a consistent run in the team as he is absolutely awesome trust me. Villa fans are going to miss him loaaaaads.

Read back through the thread and you'll see that Tom has a very strong opinion on Young. He's an average winger that's not nearly as good as either Valencia or Nani and that Utd definitely won't sign him.

Tom's clueless though..........Young is better than Valencia, don't know about Nani though............Young racks up the assists and gets close to double figures in goals, brilliant player...............miles better than valencia, giggs and maybe even Nani but im not sure on that.

I need to catch up on the USA tour games - but you think Nani will get the nod ahead of Valencia (you are certainly correct that if inter-changeability is required Nani and Young is really the only option)

Certainly in more important games SAF seems to prefer Valencia - but that would cancel any option for swapping the wingers mid-game multiple times - and Park I think has been tried on the right but not enough to really be called a viable option

Well Valencia's injured so Nani will most certainly be starting the season, lets say it's more of a hope of mine that Nani & Young will be the first choice. Like you said though Valencia when fit will no doubt get the nod for some of the bigger games but when he plays someone like A.Cole as well as he has I dont really have a problem in certain games bringing him in. Against Barca in the final on paper it was the right move, Tony V just decided to have a shocker that day and just kick everyone :p

Gibbs, Vermaelen and Sagna didn't play to be fair. We played our worst defensive lineup possible in that game.

If a new CB comes in Squillaci gets no where near the first team unless everyone else gets gunned down.

But he way our team gets injured you know our best back four will be out for at least a few months. Plus apart from verm there hasn't been much to shout about with the rest so far.

Jenkinson has been better than Sagna all preseason and Sagna/Gibbs are our worst players for being out of position, though I'm not really sure who is less useful out of Gibbs and Traore. Vermaelen is great and has been great, but the partnership with any CB he's played with has been useless, both CB's have to work together, aside from Verm none of the other guys play that way. THough, I'm willing to give Kos the benefit of the doubt as I've simply not seen him play with a good CB alongside him yet.

The problem with the defence wasn't the personel, it was the way they played, and the fact that all the problems were the same mistakes our "first choice" players were making all last year.

Maybe/hopefully Vermaelen can beat some sense into whoever plays alongside him, but I doubt it.

We need a new right back(or the old one) without question a new left back, and 2 CB's.

 Come on Sneijder you know it makes sense :D!

Daily Fail though =/ - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...-current-midfield-crop.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

I wouldnt expect him to take a pay cut but at the same time compromises have to be made to get a deal done. The idea of spending £35m and making the new player our highest earner while at the same time recognising he will have little resale value makes no sense in many ways.

Also this "scholes replacement" thing is a bit of a red herring as Scholes hasnt been a fixture on the team sheet for a while. Also which incarnation of Scholes are we so desperate to replace? The striker? The attacking midfielder? We havenet had those for many years. The passing machine perhaps, as he was in more recent years?

Apparently 'Arry interested in a swap deal for Zamora (Crouch going the other way). God I hope not.

Cant see that one flying. Spurs need to set their sights higher than the likes of him. Having said that what they also need to do is find a partnership that works up front too.

Ray Wilkins (stay on yer feet) made a good point today when he said that Spurs could have an excellent season dependent on who they didnt sell rather that who they buy.

That simply wont happen, Fergie wont sign someone who comes in thinking he's bigger than the club. If Sneijder does sign he wont even be the best player at the club so hell need to realise the size of the club he'll be coming to, and while he may be the big fish at Inter he wont have the same status at United.
