Why do you think we didn't bid for Mata? Who needs to waste cash when there's talent like that on the free?

Best English midfielder in the world apparently. ;)

Joking aside he would certainly give the team steel but god knows how he would assimilate himself into it. Probably flick-knives at dawn with Nasri.

Newcastle are sure gona be in a Meltdown this year. Who have they bought in. Carrol, Nolan and barton gone. Relegation?

Whichever club signs Barton is going to get ridiculed but to be fair to him, he's far from a bad player. He's not got into any serious trouble for a couple of years now and I don't think you can hold the things he's said about Newcastle recently against him; he's far from being the only player to have spoken out and there's clearly something going on behind the scenes.

On a free transfer, especially if you have some sort of clause that allows you to terminate his deal if he steps out of line, he'd be worth the gamble to quite a few clubs imo.

I might upset some of the Liverpool fans saying this but if Meireles does end up leaving, Barton on a free transfer might not be that bad a signing. He'd provide us with an option on the right hand side, very much in line with how I think Dalglish wants his right sided player to play and he had an excellent understanding with Carroll at Newcastle.

NilePowerRanger: Most used sub in the prem last season.. Now I'm struggling to even get a pre season game.. haha.. #laughORcry what a joke.

Ignoring the fact he's chosen a stupid twitter name.. My god, something's really really wrong at Newcastle

Why are people trying to make more of it than they want, Nile says he's considering his future because HE CAN'T GET A GAME, not because of other problems. Why can't he get a game vs last season, last season they had no strikers, and he was still only a sub, and he was rubbish, now they are sorting out buying strikers and playing better players ahead of him.

Rubbish player who can't get game wants to leave, as does incredibly mouthy criminal....... its a conspiracy I tell you, a conspiracy.

Or they don't want to offer a criminal another contract, and they don't want to play a woeful player?

He's easily worth a gamble to any club outside of the top 4/5 imo.

Deffo. I rated him for most of last season. Most people seemed to base their views on his character, the team he plays for and his past.

I saw a number of games where the opposition was trying to kick 7 shades of **** out of him to get a rise but he stayed cool.

As you say, he would be great for most sides outside the top 6.

Carrol went in january to a ridiculously over-the-top bid that any club would have found it hard to refuse.

Nolan was noticably slower by the end of the season than at the start, he's the oldest looking 29 year old in the world & wanted a 5 year contract.

If I behaved towards my employer the way Barton has done recently, I'd be straightforwardly sacked. I like him as a player, but I have issues with him as a person, and paying somebody that much money for causing trouble irks me.

Carroll, any team would miss. Nolan was a leader, but his usefulness as a player was waning, Barton's always been more trouble than he's worth, both with his mouth & his hollywood pass fetish.

We need a striker admittedly, but Gosling & Cabaye (and obviously Tiote's amazing) have looked very good in pre season, and Vuckic looks a quality striker back-up. Marveaux's looked good too, as long as Ben Arfa gets over this latest injury & isn't rushed back, our squad still looks stronger than last years. And for a young 'un Abeid doesn't look at all bad. Ba on the other hand has looked like a mirror image of Ameobi, lets hope he's just unfit currently.

If only we could sell Smith & Perch...

They bought about 5 french players

Carroll wasn't there for half a season, and they lost a lot less games while getting more points in the second half of the season.

Cabaye from double winning Lille who was first team, Nolan replacement basically, 5ish year younger and possibly better. They'll have Ben Arfa back, loads of potential already pretty good, they got the winger Liverpool and a few other clubs were all in for, Demba Ba who got 7 goals in 13 appearances for West Ham and is a HUGE improvement over the strikers they had last season and they are trying to bring in another striker.

Frankly they've replaced like for like and they already have two essentially new wingers(as Arfa basically didn't play last season) so if Barton leaves they already have his replacement. At this stage I'd say the squad is already stronger than the second half of last season.

They need younger people on lower wages and less trouble makers, they are still in debt and if they can clear the debt they'll do better in the long term, they've come up, done very well, and now improved the squad.

wouldnt touch Barton with a barge pole unless VERY desperate

He is always on the verge of doing something stupid which brings bad press to the club, even if it is off the pitch - and as he has attacked former team mates in the past he isnt exactly what you could describe as a team-builder either

I like Simpson as a player - but not the most reliable source of indepth evaluation (due to age / experience more than anything)

edit - IF he could be trusted to keep his cool for the term of a contract then possibly he could be worth something to 10th or lower - but there is no way he can be given his personal history(and its not like it was all when he was a much younger player either). With staying in the EPL (and all the sponsors required to do that) being so financially drastic - its better to gamble on a relatively cheap young import than such a risk-prone older player imo

I haven't seen any Newcastle in preseason, how is Ba looking bad?

At West Ham he is, well he's one of those players who always seems to have no control of the ball, he'll control it, and instead of being at his feet it will be a metre away, and then he'll just pull a great pass out of nowhere and set up an attack. He's a weird gangly looking dude, is it more like that or, he's been missing sitters all over the place.

I think he's a risk but, over Ameobi/Best/Nile I would be really surprised if he wasn't significantly more successful considering how he played last season. Injury wise though he's a pretty big risk, can't remember what the "fail his medical but its ok" reason is, but he picked up a bunch of other injuries at West Ham so didn't play all that much.
