Diablo III to Require Constant Internet Connection

All those years playing D2 i dont think i ever got a single player character to higher then level 20.

It was essentially an always online game as has been stated. D3 will be the same for me.

I dont think its the same as a purely single player game having to be online all the time. As those are the type of games i would play on the laptop when im away from home. D3 wont be.

Just because you didn't want to play Diablo offline doesn't mean nobody else did. I had absolutely zero interest in D2 online. Regular non-ladder was full of hackers and ladder took a while before it got hacked but since you couldn't play the character offline that was useless to me. They aren't the only reasons but the end result is the same.

This is no different to any other retarded 'always online' system. And you can almost guarantee an offline version will be pirated at some point.

Congratulations on winning the not understanding prize.

Of course you won't get lag playing SP, you're authenticating your characters and items with a server, not connecting to a dedicated server per player.

Co-op isn't going to have dedis is it?

I take it you don't remember lagging out as trying to join a game in d2? That is what will be happening at prime time as you authenticate. Nevermind if you want to play as you are away from home and your normal isp. You will be connecting to a server, every item will be authenticated as it drops. You kill a mod/boss, blizzards server sends the dropped list. You pick the item up, then inform their server. I think its you that doesn't understand, it all to do with the Real Cash AH.

I hope there will be for people like yourself who genuinely dont enjoy playing Diablo online.

For me though, it has always been an online game, i only played ladder and dont remember seeing hackers, Possibly people had hacked items but not sure how i would have known.

To me it is different to other always online systems, as i view the game differently to yourself. It always was a game where i had to be online to play, so this changes nothing.

Whatever Blizzard say this is obviously a Stealth DRM but get used to it SP games without always on DRM will become extinct sooner or later as piracy on PC is bad so the only way they can ensure a decent chance of preventing piracy is measures like always on DRM.

No publisher is immune to piracy on PC regardles of the game: Half Life, Portal, Starcraft or any other big name game series all get pirated a lot its an unfortunate reality that some people will pirate & have no interest in buying anything whatsoever........

Whut? I understand fine mate. Just authenticating drops and characters will be nothing compared to running a full on MMO handling all that and everything else, something Blizzard have a wee bit of experience of. if your connection can't cope, they can't fix it magically for you.

Things have come a way since the early naughties. You think your going to get server lag from authentication drops ever time you knob an enemy? I suspect they've put some thought into it.

AC2 I'd prefer the pirated version, no faffing about with having to have a consistent net connection for a primarily single player game. D3 I'd prefer the retail version, sure there's no single, but multi player is overwhelmingly where it's at. It's pretty crappy that Blizzard have left out a feature like that but I never had a problem with Guild Wars doing the same.

I don't share your faith, it will become clear when the game is released. Single player should not need a connection, single player didn't need to be magically fixed with a connection.

I suspect server lag will be an issue, you suspect it will not. I suspect at some point there will be routing issues to Blizzard's servers, you suspect there will not. I suspect my isp will have issue, you suspect not. I suspect I will like to play single player when all the later pop up from time to time or am out and about, you think I shouldn't? Put some thought into it?

Yes, times have changed and given the failings of D2 online they will be putting a lot more effort into it. Chances are with people to play with I would probably play it online most of the time too but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like the option to play it offline without needing a net connection.

Bless. It's not that I think you shouldn't, but if your connection craps out on you, it's not my problem, so I find it hard to care. :)

I think you're being massivly OTT with the pesimism. If Blizzard are that bad at devising network solutions, it's no wonder they don't run the most successful MMO out there... Wait..

This is the direction they want to take their game. I like it, the hop in/out idea embodies what I want from the game.

Great, so what do people like me do who have a 512k connection that constantly drops out. Been looking forward to this game for years and now I won't be able to play it. Great. I'll be the first to download the hack to allow you to play offline.

Ummm get a internet connection that doesnt drop out?

Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but to me, the D2 experience was purely 100% online, so this makes literally no difference as far as I'm concerned. It's a multiplayer game at it's core - you can never expect to collect a decent amount of higher tier items without trading etc.
Also, for people with poor internet connections, that's like saying that you hated crysis because your pc was too weak to play it - I treat an internet connection like most other components within a pc in that respect. Of course I realise that in some certain circumstances getting a decent connection isn't possible, but still.

TBH with the 'real cash' AH I can't see Blizzard wanting to take any risks at all with possible hacks so it's understandable that they've gone with this route.

Still, sucks if you have a bad connection or want to play when away on business with no connection available. Not the end of the world though, plenty of other games to while away those times...
