RvN had scored 62 in 67 games so was a sure bet.
Yorkeyboy had been banging them in for villa for years.
We just pick the cream of the crop and go get them. In the 90's spending 10-12 mill was enough to do it. Then it became 30 mill so we went there too.
We had a core of say 4 players like Giggs, scholes Neville and maybe schmeical and then just put a lot of expensive players around them. If that didnt work, we just bought someone else to cover the gap whilst entertaining jokers like Chadwick et al.
You can see just how poor our youth system is by its lack of consistency at producing top level players. After we play them in the league or league cup a few times, they inevitably end up at oldham or worse...

In other news, DJ Campbell has signed for QPR. He didnt seem too bad for Blackpool last season, will be interesting to see him line up with Bothroyd. 2 players that seem to be mentioned as potential England internationals, they have a fair bit to prove this year.

But then back to my point. take midfield for instance, we had Keane and Scholes. Once they started ailing we just threw millions after millions at it.
Veron 28 million, failed, kleberson 8 million, failed, miller 2? million failed.
Time to get serious, 18 million hargreaves, failed, 18 million carrick, inconclusive, 16 million Anderson, could be okay. Scholes finally retires, time to ***** 25+ on sneijder perhaps?
Take the strike force, 9 million cole, 12 million dwight yorke (both were or were close to british records and we would have had the record with shearer had he wanted to come). then we spend 18 on ruud, 30 on waynor, 8 on forlan, 30 on berbatov. Where does it stop lol?
