I think we'll be OK against Udinese, but I fear next Sunday. Asking a bunch of kids to play against Newcastle and what was an average Liverpool side yesterday is one thing. Asking them to hold their own against the league champions who have strengthened over the summer is another ball game altogether. Could be embarrassing.

Dont feel too dispondent - it could be who-ever can outscore the other type of deal, rather than either team being totally dominant over the other (Rafael, Vidic and possibly Rio out even before the Spurs game) and with a shakey keeper, it could easily go either way (especially if Nasri is still with Arsenal).

Personally I thought Arsenal were a little unlucky vs Liverpool, the kids held their own for nigh on 70 minutes until the debutant got sent off - admittedly a few Liverpool players werent completely fit and they are still trying to work each other's playing style out , but Arsenal did reasonably well

It will be a very long season though in general unless Wenger invests heavily

edit - if that report is true I honestly dont think Arsenal can afford to pay the same kind of wages (£160k+ /wk for big stars) as Chelsea, Urd and City, I also think its totally the wrong way to go. I would however suggest something incentive based written into this renewal cycle like £100k now, £110k for CC / FA Cup final win, £130k/week EPL title, £150k/week CL final win - or something along those lines (immediate rise once the above is completed) - not including any one - off payments for each already there. Until Arsenal start winning Championships/finals again I think its the road to ruin to try and compete with wages from the other three

The problem is you're one game away from no CL this year, and looking in real trouble to qualify for next year. Your further then ever from winning the league too. If Arsenal don't sort it out now, it will get harder every season to turn it around.

On Sept 1st I'll re-evaluate our position with everything considered. I'm not throwing the towel in because we won the 1st leg and lost 1 game this season. Problems are mounting I can see that, but 1-2 DECENT signings (doesn't have to be anything ridiculous) and get our injured/suspended players back we'll be fine. String a few results together and we'll be all good.

Major Snip
Even without Champ league football Arsenal will still do extremely well financially in comparison to others in the same boat. Yes as of right now the football has stalled and they are in a bad rut, but they still play fantastic football, they had some great games last year (Barcelona etc). I'm not one to judge a team 1 week in to the season. Let's qualify for the Champs, sign a couple of interesting yet proven players and crack on with the season.

I'm still not sure why you call yourself a supporter DM?
I remember when ever I went to Highbury as a youngster week in and out, there was a guy behind, every game all he ever did was moan and sweat his head off at the Arsenal team  I really did not understand the point in going and paying, he clearly had no joy in it at all.
I did then and still love watching Arsenal - that's my team :)

Apart from the odd match or two, our football really isn't that exciting. Most of the time it's just us camping outside the opposition box, passing it around for a few mins, looking for 'that' pass through the defence. We do show glimpses of the old arsenal, e.g. the barca winning goal, but most of the time our attacks are slow and indecisive.

Valencia confirm agreement with Chelsea for Mata. Just waiting on medical.

Modric next.

 Wasn't he on his way to Arsenal a week or two ago?

 Anyone heard anything about Kaka to Arsenal on loan?

2 things to consider imo

1) VP is a great player, no question.....but his injury record is awful, and imo especially now (that you are relying on his goals to keep you in contention), you desperately need a replacement /addition for when he is out - and imo it has to be someone reasonably well known as you cant afford to give them a season to acclimatise to the EPL either. Depending on the Nasri situation you might need a good box-to box player also in the middle of the park, with a bit of both flair and muscle (least important but over a long season it will become evident esp if Nasri does leave). Most important a towering CB

2) How much is a decent CL run worth, averaging over the last few years (of Arsenal's results) - £30 - 40m? Something like that I would guess incl TV rights with the away leg to come and such a narrow agg score I wouldnt be SO sure about progressing easily until its done. In one sense your EPL results SHOULD improve if you dont progress further in the CL - although the financial shortfall would be huge . Admittedly by most accounts your debts are nearly paid off but it would still be a horrendous shortfall for next season......

A lot of apparent done deals flying about tonight;

Mata to Chelsea - confirmed on Valencia's website
Modric to Chelsea - someone on the red caf said this is according to Sky
Sneijder to United - various twitter sources

On the Modric one Arry has confirmed he wont play against us tomorrow night as his head has been turned..... he also said he hopes Chelsea signing Mata ends their interest in Modric - doubtful as Mata will play wide of their front 3 whereas Modric would play in their central 3

Sneijder to United - various twitter sources

So is this now the 3rd or 4th completely seperate time this deal has been confirmed as complete? :D

Chelsea will be back to being pretty scary opposition if Mata and Modric have been signed (they looked pretty average a number of times end of last season and beginning of this)

lol what?
If it were my club and my money I know who I'd want in charge!
Arsenal maybe trophy less for the last few years, but constant Champ league action, constant push for the title with decent cup runs, exciting football being played AND making money......yeah complete destruction of the club

But they arent going to like him much if our stadium is half filled...saturday it was looking pretty empty and i wouldnt be surprised if it continues...then what the directors are going to kiss his ass and say well done??? lol

If you include the amount of times the Mirror have said it's done then I make it the 16th time... but hey who's counting ;)

Could not agree more, it certainly seems at the moment most are picking us for the title and it being a straight shoot out for second between Chelsea and City with City being most peoples picks and Chelsea in their current state I'd agree with that but the idea of them replacing Malouda with Mata on the left hand side and potentially sticking Modric in midfield be it as a replacement for any of their current players is a very frightening prospect indeed, especially if Torres, Sturridge and Lukaku come good

Are you teasing me again Tom? :p

Sorry but I couldn't mention Chelsea significantly strengthening their side without holding onto the hope that we might sign a marquee player as well :o :(

Reports suggesting he is on £55,000 per week. Think most of the top 6 could afford that!

If thats true then cheap as chips...Arsenal could well afford that lol.

I think that will be initial wage, but chelsea can afford to pay him more if he does develop quickly, If he is performing as expect then i wouldn't be surprised if next year he's given a very lucrative contract. Where as arsenal would never step above 75k for him.

Actually had he signed for us and did well, im sure Wenger would have increased his wages to reflect his impact...Fabregas was on about £100k a week, maybe more.

Anyhow Mata made the right choice, Chelsea have infinitely a better chance than us at winning the EPL....look forward to seeing him in action and see what we might have missed out on all because Wenger cant get his finger out...

Sorry but the club is WELL beyond 1-2 decent signings to do well, Cesc is one of 4-5 central midfield players who are just on another level, we will not get another one, Wilshire isn't a million miles off, but Cesc has merely been making up for our lack of quality elsewhere, we had Cesc AND Wilshire last year, this year just Wilshire. They linked up brilliantly and did most of the creative and a huge portion of the defensive work in midfield. Cesc is literally irreplaceable, it will take improving SEVERAL positions to get back to where we were, and what Arsenal fans seem to forget, is we were no where in terms of winning the league. Back where we were, isn't good enough. With Cesc, and Clichy, and Nasri, and Bendtner, we still needed 3-4 positions improving and our backup strengthening to really go after the title. We're now 2, and likely going to be 3 or 4 players FURTHER away than before.

As for calling myself a fan, I don't complain when we play great football and win 7-1, I don't complain if someone makes a one off mistake and we lose a game, I don't complain if we lose 5-1 to Utd when going balls out to win the league. I complain when we win 2-0, against someone crap, and the same people make the same mistakes over and over, and just because it didn't cost us, nothing is done about it....... because eventually those mistakes do cost us games, and titles, and cups.

I can't stand fans who sit back and say, it could be worse, we could be Torquay, etc, etc. We're Arsenal, WAGES are where all the spending is, not transfers, for every 100mil we spend bringing in players, we'll be spending HALF A BILLION on wages over the 5 years those players are at the club, and the other players. In wages we simply are a top 4 team, we've been wasting 20-30mil a year on players who, aren't playing at all, or simply aren't good enough, every year you pay a Denilson 2-3mil, thats the same money that could be spent on wages of someone a heck of a lot better. I want to win the league, and can't abide repeated mistakes that aren't learnt from. If Wenger makes a mistake, and learns from it, I don't care, thats life, if I was manager I'd make mistakes. But if he refuses to learn from them and walks headlong first into the same mistake over and over, sorry but thats NOT doing a good job. I think from 2006 up till 2 years ago, we had a squad that could have won the league every single year but for constant mistakes from Wenger, not even being in the fight(except mathematically), is a joke. Every team has bad years, UTd have come 3rd, thats life. Money isn't an excuse, wages aren't an excuse, buying bad players isn't an excuse(Chelsea and Utd have made LOADS of mistakes, difference is they learn from them and move on, drop them/sell them), the only excuse is Wenger doing the same things over and over and over, none of which work.

As for financial position being strong without the champs league, you could not be more wrong. This is where fans are just daft. Sorry but, in the champs league we don't suddenly end up in the position of being like Villa but 20k bigger stadium that brings in 40-50mil extra a year. We have wages of 110mil, if we drop out of the champs league we'll still have wages of 110mil a year..... this is what you fail to grasp. Our 60-100mil profit years have been mostly from the sale of the flats, which are now go, we can't resell them over and over and over ;)

At Highbury, say we had 50mil income a year in receipts, thats probably close, thats all well and good, so we move to Emirates, with 100mil gate receipts, woo, 50mil profit, problem is we used to spend 65mil on wages, we now spend 110mil, and overall we're almost exactly where we were, very little net profit, without champs league, we'll almost certainly be losing money every year.

For some reason redknapp seems to think that us signing mata means that we don't want modric anymore. Wishful thinking - modric isn't playing tomorrow and I wouldn't be surprised if he signs for chelsea before the end of the week.
