****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Aye, I did a CWM revert, firmware etc didn't revert to stock so seeked odin and a stock firmare/kernel.

Yeah, factory reset doesn't restore the phone to it's actual factory state, it restores it to the default state of the ROM you have installed. The phone doesn't keep a copy of the stock ROM anywhere so can't go back to it by itsself :).

Now that is all done it looks like it has fixed the issue. Need to add all my contacts and accounts again as the KIES restore is apparently gash.

Yeah, I've never tried Kies backup/restore as I've never saw a single person say a good thing about it :p. I only have it installed because it's required for the drivers it installs.

The only issue I can really see is the KIES firmware status which now says:

"This version of the device cannot be updated."

I have got PDA: KE7 / Phone: KE4 / CSC: KD1 (XEU)

Provider is TMobile. Any pointers towards firmwares to fix the issue?

Don't worry about this, KE7 is the latest version available via Kies (for non-branded firmware), that's why you can't update it :).

I'm going to give XWKE2 a go. Pretty sure this was the original one my phone came with... maybe I flashed a branded S2 firmware.

KE2 is older than what you have, if your phone is working I wouldn't go to an older firmware. If I was you I'd either:

Re-flash a custom ROM+Kernel of your choosing, this is if you still want root/custom ROM, as the problem you had won't be there on every ROM.

or

Flash to the Samsung KH3 that was recently leaked (I think it was leaked anyways), as this is the latest version available, and what most people will recommend to those not wanting to use a custom ROM.

The I5 will likely only have as good hardware as the GS2 and that is over 5 months old.

Can't say for sure on that front yet, but even if it does, the hardware is plenty good enough and 99% of people couldn't give a toss about it.

Apple aren't scared, they just like (and are very good at) suing people, but hey, it's cool to hate Apple for being a successful company.

Please don't turn this into an Apple v Samsung thread :D.

We already have the court case one, and I really don't want to have to side with Apple since I dislike their products and company in general :p.

Is one of these worth picking up? I currently have a HTC Desire and my contract has come to the stage that it can be upgraded to the Galaxy S II for an extra £3 which I can probably talk them out of.

I flashed to KF2 then Kies said go to KF3 which it now works properly and says "This is the latest firmware" as it was before.

Currently on KF3 / KE7 / KD1

Only issue I now have is CWM seems to be still on there, gives text on bootup and fails to load... wouldn't of thought that would survive factory resets + 2 flashes and 1 kernel reflash.

Atleast I can connect it to my machine now, I'll try sort out the rest tomorrow I suppose. Now that I know the backup for KIES is crap I can think about investing in a proper backup utility for the phone, scary if I lost all my data further in to the phones use.

Cheers for the help.

Don't worry. I've wasted far too much time educating clueless haters, I won't be wasting any more, they don't listen. :p

Oh yeah, that was me being stupid :D. When I debreanded mine I flashed to KE7 and Kies said the same :p

I found KF3 and flashed that and it was fixed :D.

The factory reset doesn't affect CWM, as when you reset you're reinstalling the current ROM+Kernel you currently have installed, all it does is remove all the apps/settings etc. so that it's like you freshly installed the ROM on a brand new phone.

As for it still being there after the stock ROM/Kernel flashing I don't know how to fix that. I'm not even sure (I'm an Android noob :D, haven't really looked up stuff I haven't needed myself) whether it's supposed to be there still or whether it should be the normal recovery menu :p.

I backup all my contacts to my GMail account, all my SMS are backed up via "SMS Backup +" to my Gmail account. If you decide to root again download "Titanium Backup * root", it does what I explained above.

The CWM Recovery backup is great for switching between ROMs (it basically takes an image of the phone at time of backup), but it doesn't actually let you restore just parts of the backup.

In that case I wonder what is using my battery. It just seems to drain so quickly on 3G browsing, outside that I think it doesn't last more than maybe 8-12 hours of hardly no use, with use it is about a third or half that.

Surely NoLED will stop the phone from 'sleeping', causing more drain?

Do you have auto-brightness on? If you're out in the sun the phone probably puts the brightness upto full thus draining your battery. I think that's how it works anyways, less brightness when you're somewhere dark and more brightness when you're some bright. Auto-brightness also uses battery too.

If not do you have it manually set quite bright? As if it only drains quickly when you're using it it's most likely just the screen (although using data/browser obviously uses more than the phone sleeping) being on.

Check the battery stats to see if it's mainly the screen draining it (Settings > About Phone > Battery Usage incase you're unsure :)), and have a look at what brightness level you have it on, as you will have to either turn it down or put up with the drain if it's set too high.

I think most people on here just manually set it to a brightness that they like as, as I said, auto-brightness uses battery itself and you'll often find that the screen still looks awesome at a lower brightness than it will set for you thus saving battery for no loss.

If you find that when you set the brightness manually that, while it's comfortable while inside, it's hard to see out in the sun you can download a widget (just search market for brightness or something) that will let you quickly change it from one of your home screens :).

Personally I just leave it on 50% brightness all the time, it's more than necessary indoors but it's what looks best to me and drains (for me) an acceptable amount of battery. It's a bit too dark for out in the sun if I was to sit and browse but it's fine for just using phonebook/messages etc.

Hope that helps :).

Finally got round to installing Batista ROM the other day for me it seems to be the best one out of all I've tried, nice mix of customizations & battery life seems stable & phone is very quick still.

Liking it a lot :)

I've asked the dev for any numbers battery drain but he says he isn't sure as it isn't his specialty to research things like that. Or something along those lines. Personally I don't blame him.

It was on auto before BUT if auto uses additional battery just for being auto then I will set it to something like 30% which is fine by me.

---- IN OTHER NEWS ----

After spending near enough the entire freaking day off the gsm grid because I flashed a KE7 power menu to a KF3 rom (DON'T ASK HOW!) then flashed the latest T-Mobile rom of KG2 only to have the same issue with a KG2 power menu so no booting to the home screen I almost gave up. Resorted to watching Fast Five to try and pass the time, my days this films acting is poor ...

Anyway I ended up finally just flashing the latest 2.3.4 XXKH3 ROM and then used a CircleMod to get the icons I want (still prefer the one's I had before but this will do) and the power menu. So now all is well, just need to install every single app again ... *sigh* ...

If anyone wants the mod it is here:

When I open either of the search boxes on ocuk forums from the phone, 'search' or 'search this forum', as soon as I click inside the box, the keyboard appears for a split second then the box closes and the page flicks over to the far left margin. So I can't use the search boxes from the phone. Anyone else with browser issues?

Running Batista ROM now and it's actually smoother than Lite'ning ROM which I didn't think was possible! The boot animation is visually brilliant as well and I like the additional settings for the ROM bundled in such as lockscreen mods, battery icon mods and so on.

The new animations are also really nice.

Merlin5 It seems an issue with stock browser only as in Boat Browser I have no issues in any user agent mode.

K I have a app that seems to keep gpcrashing on me, it's called "mobile mail" and Im not sure if I downloaded it or not, tho it does not show in my downloads, nor have I used it to sync with any of my emails, yet I keep getting the message...where I have put "xxx" are like russian symbols almost. Any ideas?

The application mo6xxxxxx noxxx ( process com.seven.z7) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

Are you using the mobile email program SEVEN? Why not try K-9 to manage your mail? I've not used SEVEN since my WinMo days ...

Edit: just realised you've already tried flashing that kernel.

I'd factory reset/cache/dalvik cache clear, and if that doesn't work flash the KH3 stock ROM.

DefiantAsh can you access the recovery menu?

I cannot access the recovery menu, i think i am doing it right;

Volume UP + Home + Power?

Boots to yellow triangle and samsung logo and goes no further.

Also i can't seem to factory reset it as i cant boot into the device to a menu or anything, just the logo.

I will spend this whole day posting the web to see if i can sort it :)

I love the boot animation looks really sexy on the phone, Much better than the junk Samsung put on. One thing though I can't get the battery/signal mods to work I set them & then restart the phone & nothing happens. Really do like the sense lock screen under agile lock as well.

As for browsers the best one I've found is dolphin, kinda like chrome which I thought the stock browser would be like.

Cannot post in the XDA forum on the CF-Root thread for any help, so i guess i'll be waiting a while to see if i can actually get my phone back up and running.

Posted in the CF-Root thread finally, seeking more assistance.

Will update when complete, maybe someone can solve it, and i will be offering a beer to anyone that does ;)
