I'd agree when Crapello finally gets rid of the old guard Jones and Smalling do look like being the long term successors to England's central defence. Until they, I think that Cahill has more about him then Smalling but the more Smalling plays the more reason to pick him :)

...the Liverpool defenders....

Would Liverpool really want Benayoun back though? I suppose he's a little different to Meireles though.

Of the 3 youngster we have; Robinson (LB) is very highly thought of but is still a couple of years away, Flanagan's alright but I suspect he'll be the next Steven Warnock and Kelly's already ready. Had it not been for injuries then he'd have been really pushing Johnson for his spot both for Liverpool and England.

On Benayoun; I was never a fan of his and I hope he doesn't come back. And as for Meireles, I've always thought that if the right bid comes in, he'd be allowed to leave. He's not going to get into the side in the middle of midfield and while he does a decent job in one of the attacking positions, I suspect we could bring in a more suited player for those positions with the money we'd get for him. Don't want to sell him to Chelsea though.

Understand the second part, suppose Benayoun gives you a little something different to Meireles if Kenny D is playing them more forward.

Robinson has looked good, long term England replacement for C. Cole? I really don't rate Johnson at all, I think he was a massive waste of money. Him / Richards are similar and I don't rate Richards much either.

I don't know of any other promising LB's around so possibly. And I know you don't rate Johnson, you should try watching him a bit more though. He's far better than he was and is given credit for. Kelly just looks like he's a machine though; big, strong, quick, good in the air and very comfortable on the ball.

I can't promise my opinion on him will change :p but I'll try and catch more of him. I see no reason to start him ahead of this Kelly though, suppose he'd be a decent right midfield option if L'pool got a bit short in that department (can't see that with the options they have now though)

Manchester United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen says the club could still sign Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan before the transfer window closes on Wednesday.

oh god not this again!

smalling has shown hes a much better rb

smalling will be a great cb he aint as good as cahill as we speak now

Disagree, whilst Smalling has shown he's a more than capable RB he's also shown his best position is undoubtedly at centre back and his best performances have come there (he's only actually played RB 5 times for us 4 of which have been this season)

As for who's better right now? I'm biased so I'm obviously going to say Smalling (or at worst they're level). Personally in terms of England I suspect Smalling or Richards will play at RB in the upcoming games with Lescott playing alongside Terry. I dont see Cahill getting a game nor do I think he's better than someone like Dawson.

I actually wouldn't mind Benayoun, he'd add some depth at least.

I'd take Benayoun at United as well, very underrated player and probably the exact type of player Chelsea have been missing in their rather uncreative midfield recently. Seems odd that they're selling him unless they know it's a forgone conclusion that Modric is coming in....

Benayoun can **** off.
Much rather have Raul, don't think he is completely neccesary for a challenge to fourth but i would still love to have him in the squad, when the going gets tough benayoun is a **** player.

Also if Raul goes who is the replacement? Get Cole and Poulsen to **** off first.

Couple of other rumours;

Joe Cole having a medical at an unnamed club (believed to be QPR) tomorrow

Macheda on loan to Newcastle (hope it doesn't go the same way Rossi's loan to them went)

There is the same rumor doing the rounds but him going Sunderland.
