£80 to fill up!

Ive managed to increase my economy by a large margin, well relative to my car. Ive gone from 14.8 to 22 mpg by doing a few things.

1, replaced the vac advance unit on my Engine so now im managing to drive easier on part throttle and also then advancing the ignition the old way until it pinks and then backing it off a bit. I managed to gain 30 degrees of advance (including the new unit) on part throttle.
2, driving at 50 mph not 60 to work and back and playing the game of not using the brakes (and thus saving on wasted energy). Works well as my drive to work allows me to see many of the crossroads and traffice lights early on allowing me to slowly adjust my speed and timing it so i dont need to stop.

Only down side is my new work is 30 miles away and my old one was only 7.5. Good job it pays better.

On the topic of filling up, im lazy too and only fill up on the same day same place once a week which gives me enough for the tank full to last that week to work (was £85 now about £55). I do it as its routine, lets me keep track of spending and allows me to keep good reconds for my tax claims (1 reciept for each week claimed).

I imagine that in the event of a fuel tank splitting, the petrol vapour would escape the immediate area far quicker than the fuel which would just be sitting on the road?

Yep escape out of the tank ready to go bang with a variety of electrical systems, petrol in liquid form is not flammable. You're already in trouble anyway of the body has had enough deformation to rupture fuel tanks.

I wish I knew the mentality behind this, I really do. People roll up and put bang-on £10 or £20 in as I'm standing there brimming the tank, then walk in, pay cash, and walk out. WHY?!?! Why not brim it?? I don't understand humanity :(

Generally if I do this it's filling enough to get me home if it runs that low, as I know that the petrol station just down the road from our house is the cheapest around (in comparison to where I work anyway, as much as 6-7p/l difference at times) Unless I find anywhere cheaper when I'm out and about of course, then I'll fill it to the brim.

Towards the end of the month sometimes money is tight and I'll only fill enough to last me until pay day. First fill of the month is always to the top though.

Never mind people, winters well on its way so we'll be getting more fuel for our money!

Was talking to the girl at our shell garage yesterday and she was saying she just had a guy complaining about the fact that he was £100 to fill his 60 plate jag xj. She said she was this close to telling him to shut up and stop moaning and if he was that bothered he should have bought a smaller car!
I do lol at people that come in and put £10 in their cars though, then 1-2 days later they're in again, and again, and again, what the hell just fill it!

Why, is there a per litre discount if you have a smaller car?

What does a litre cost in the UK? Or do you count in gallons?
Here in The Netherlands it's between 1.65 euro and 1.75 euro per litre on the highways.

Was no fun with my Volvo S80 2.9 and 80 litre tank :P

As of yesterday a litre (yeah its litres here :() is £1.329 in Oxford. So ~€1.50. Probably comparable price to yours at the motorway services as they milk it.

Okay sounds comparable indeed!
I live close to the border with Germany and in the smaller German cities you can get Shell VPower 100 racing for like 1.50 euro which is pretty awesome so I take the girl "shopping" sometimes and then when I drive by I'm like "oooooh vpower 100 GIEV" :D :)

Traded my Volvo S80 2.9 last week for a 2001 BMW 330i so I'm still pretty much trying to get the cheapest fuel here... Damn right foot ;)

Because obviously a small car wouldn't cost £100 to fill
Don't think you read that one properly fox.
Also someone that can afford a new XJ probably isn't gonna be bankrupted by filling it.

His point is that fuel tank capacity is irrelevant. The jag could cost half that to fill if it had a tank half the size.

What is relevant is fuel consumption. The fact that it costs lots to fill his jag is a bonus, and could only ever be seen as a bonus, as it means it can hold more fuel which means less trips to fill it up.

Exactly this.

The E60 BMW M5 has a stupid 60L tank, which is fine for a Ford Fiesta but not good on a fire-breathing super-saloon. But wait! It costs under £100 to fill! Excellent!

I'm glad my tank is 88L. It gives me a good range, which means I spend less time in petrol stations. I spend the same amount of money as I would if I had a 40L tank but I spend half the time filling up.

I think you've missed the point. The cost of filling the car up is pretty irrelevant without considering how far that tank will take you. So, small car does not necessarily = better value.

In other news, what annoys me most about filling up, are those people that do not use 'pay at pump'.

There are sometimes reasons why you cant use it tbf. For example if supermarkets have promotions on you usually cant use the vouchers at the pump. Also for some reason at both Tesco and Sainsburies filling stations there is a £59 Amex limit, which does not fill either of my cars. There is also the £99 limit for all cards, which does not fill my SL.

My 335i has a smaller tank than my 530i but is no note economical so although it costs less to fill I end up filling more often.

I always want the biggest possible tank.

Indeed, which is fair enough. It's when someone rolls up in a polo and either sticks £5 worth of petrol in and then goes and pays in store. Seriously, what is the point!?

Ive cracked £100 fills twice in the new XJs. It allows you to go to the til with a sense of satisfaction in the knowledge you're not a ***** and can get anywhere in the country on that tank without stopping.
