****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

Edward Teach:

Very valid points you have there and I fully agree, but unless some solid info is in the original post then I think it is always going to be difficult to collate decent information.

Anyways, there are two apps for mail because Gmail only works for Gmail whilst Mail works for all others.

Personally I stick with Gmail because its far easier to use and has very nice mail controls built in plus it uses push notifications. This means you get your mail as soon as it arrives. Not sure if you knew that or not :p

Also, most people use an app called Appbrain to check the most popular and highest rated apps. It is worth installing that to browse through apps.

I'll give you a few of my most used apps though, sorry for no links since I'm browsing via the phone itself!

MoboPlayer - awesome video player that literally plays anything
Quickpic - better gallery app, much faster and more features
Dropbox
Evernote
SwiFTP
IMDB
Movies
Titanium Backup (needs Root access)
SMS Backup and Restore
ES File Explorer

And more but I'll be here forever ;)

Root means you need Superuser access on your phone, most people refer to it as rooting. There's guides and explanations over at XDA Forums if you wanna know more, but thats more advanced stuff that you may want to take a look at later.

Hope that helps a little!

Thanks a lot mate!

I probably wont root this phone as its my wifes! I will probably have to teach her how to use it however, and I thought I would try and find some good apps.
Considering Samsung developed their own overlay, you would think they would go to more effort explaining it - the instruction manual is very sparse! It feels fairly intuitive, but I would like to know what touchwiz is doing that is different from standard android.

I have just trawled page by page through this thread to here (p43)!

We just got a galaxy s ii and I was looking for some views on what the decent apps are etc what stuff that samsung has preloaded should I discard etc

So far I have only been reading a lot of phone hype!

I notice there is a degree of duplication I seem to have two mail apps for example. I have assumed that the standard gmail app will be superior l- is that the case?

Any advice on the basics for this phone would be much appreciated (or link me to somewhere I can get that), not used an android handset before so very nee to this.

You can setup you gmail account to check your pop3 account if you wish so you only need to use the gmail app, plus you get the benefit of push notifications.

guys quick one re: nandroid.

i want to update from kf3 to kh3. I can't use nandroid can I? as that IS the rom, yea?

I need something like titanium backup? but then i have to faf with restoring all my themes and icons etc?

Nandroid is the backup bit of clockworkmod. It should back up everything on the phone, other than clockworkmod its self.

I don't know how much you lose going from kf3 to kh3 but titanium is probably a good option anyway, just in case.

USB Jig question.

Ok, so I have the ugly yellow triangle when booting.

With the USB jig do i simply plug it in and it removes it? or do i have to reflash or anything after?

Turn off, jig in, turn on, download screen appears, turn off, remove jig, re start
no triangle its that simple just done it myself.....ta

in fact its the best little accessory I got so far coz I got stuck in a boot loop once and I just jigged, restored some stock from odin and sorted problem out, otherwise I would have thought I'd bricked phone.

Do you guys bother with any security? I'm after a remote wipe solution if the phone gets stolen, any recommendations?

Thanks :)

Samsung Dive supports mobile tracking, ringin, wiping, locking and call logs retrieval.

Register with Samsung and add the Samsung Account to the phone.

What ROM?

You can add the Samsung account via accounts & sync settings screen once you've registered on the Dive website.

As long as it's not stripped out teh Samsung services for tracking/wiping etc it should work out fine.

yes but if i did a nandroid of kf3 and then flashed to kh3, restored nandroid.. i'd be back on kf3 wouldn't i? cos nandroid IS the rom.

I'm on VillianRom, when I add account my only options are Google or 'Server'. :(

Nandroid backs up everything to do with the state of the ROM and nothing user data so none of your photos, videos etc are backed up or the contents of the sd card/internal storage.
