Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Okay, so this might explain the problems I've been having over the past few days:

Upstream power levels are within range, but wow... -13dBmV downstream power levels!

I have an attenuator marked up as 10dB forward path attenuator in line before my modem. Could anyone advise if removing this would put my downstream signals back in line with spec, and is there any reason I shouldn't remove it myself?

Edit: To answer my own question, attenuator removed:

Power levels back well within spec, connection perfect, no more dropped packets, downloading at 6MB/sec.

Life is good :D[/QUOTE]
I did this with mine as well, although it was only a 5db one. It was working okay but was a little high so took it off.

I'm having fun with the superhub... blasted thing keeps freezing needing a manual reboot everytime it fails.

When I'm away from home, I frequently need access to my home server... this is really getting annoying.

The big red sections are where the hub has been down:

i'm just in the process of moving all my tv etc to virgin and i questioned my 50mb broadband and that i still have the Dlink 615. the 50mb team informed me that the dlink is better than the superhub currently. is this true?

i'm running ddwrt firmware

The D-link 615 is rubbish in my opinion. Before the super hubs launched techs were always replacing them.

I presume you have the Ambit modem with the D-link router?

P.S. I am in no way shape or form saying that the super hub is better than the d-link, just saying that I personally dislike the d-link

It's not the greatest bit of kit around... but for a "free" router it's not that bad... I'd say it slightly edges out the netgear dg834 when the dd-wrt firmware has been applied.

d-link vs superhub though... d-link is the winner in my book!

There are, of course, loads of things out there better...

The 615 is ok but it has only 10\100 ports the SH gog 1gig ports.

I have the new super hub and seem to be getting some packet loss. I have already disbaled firewall. Ip port thing and flood detection.

What router are you guys going to use for modem mode?
I currently have modem mode but I can only get about 30mbit on my wrt 120n which is apparently a bottleneck that most dsl routers have.

^ wrong, my guy came and said that he dint need to take the old modem, so i still have mine

Nope I am 100% right.

If the guy who fitted your superhub left the old modem then he was either an idiot contractor or you had an old modem from an older now obsolete account.

When a tech adds 1 piece of equipment onto your account to replace another that tech is then accountable for the old equipment.

If there is no old equipment showing on the account then he wont be accountable for it

does this still count if you have completed your contract and are now taking out a new one?

If your contract has expired and are no longer a customer then they dont have to take your old equipment.

If you are currently a paying customer then they will have to.

However if you fall into the first then you wont be able to use your old equipment anyway as the technician will have to use the super hub.

As a technician it will not physically allow us to activate equipment onto a customers account if it is not in our inventory. Its just not possible. That's not to say that someone else within the company couldn't do is as its just a mac address at the end of the day

If you ask for a SH self install kit like I did you get to keep the old 50Mb modem :)
They will put the old modem back on if I call. I will wait for this new firmware first.
