Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I've just been granted access to the world of 100mbit.

Seem to have pretty good pings here too :D

13-14ms to www.bbc.co.uk

Looks like I'm finally out of an over-subscribed area :D

Already having wireless issues with the blasted superhub though :( The engineer who came round had never heard of superhub issues and wouldn't entertain the idea of me using my existing docsis 3 modem (from 50mbit)

If you don't mind me asking what pings did you get before on 50Meg? Are you still on Docsis 3?

I was frequently getting 25-30ms pings (sometimes over 40 in peak hours) and transfer speed would never reach the full 50mbit... most I ever saw was ~5.1MByte/s

Luton is very very badly over-subscribed!

I'm now in Leighton Buzzard = different pipe = great pings and easily maxxing download speed :D

Absolutely ridiculous.

I rang up yesterday to upgrade from 50Mb to 100Mb (only have Internet service with Virgin Media). Sales were absolutely adement there was no way 100Mb could be offered for less than £45/month.

Sure enough, ended up with retentions. Again, the agent in retentions stood fast. Absolutely no deals whatsoever can be cut on 100Mb. I threatened to terminate my contract with them and move elsewhere, and the chap was ready to let me walk.

The engineer is coming in a few days.. :o

Ouch... I've only been with them since last year... I was genuinely calling to cancel... the guy asked why, so I told him the truth... combination of 'considering' Infinity and the offer that was on quidco when I signed up for the move (something silly like £150 cash back).

I got them down to free installation, free 100mbit activation and my first 6 months at this place are free... then it's £35 for 3 months... then £45 (including phone line). Plus it's only a 12 month contract!

So I've actually managed to get 100mbit + phone line for £240 for the year (average of £20/month).

I don't expect to get that deal again next year unless that epic quidco cashback offer returns.

Do you have JUST internet, or a "bundle" of internet + phone? It seems they're able to do deals on bundles, but if you have just a single service then you're up the creak...

The most you would be able to get is 6 without including overheads, so sounds about right to me?

Yep, just Internet and nothing else. I mentioned talking to friends and reading on the Internet about people with daft deals, way below the advertised price. The agent in retentions was having none of it, said they were probably bundle deals.

On the plus side, I was told over the phone this wouldn't require a new 12 month contract (have been out of the contract period for a while now), and having an engineer round will be a convenient opportunity to raise the ridiculous issues I've been having with my 50Mb connection the past week or so.

Have had about 50% downtime over the past 24 hours.

More bad news for you, I'm afraid... installation engineers and break/fix engineers are two completely different teams in VM... it's likely the guy you get won't have a clue, I'm afraid :(

Well... theoretical max is 6.25MB/s... I never saw more than 5.1MB/s, usually 4.5-4.9

Overheads don't take up 1.15MB/s (9.2Mb/s) plus!

And then if you compare to what I'm now getting (my screenie above)... I've now seen 11.5MB/s peak. Translating that to 50Mb/s means I should have been seeing 5.75MB/s on the old connection if the scaling is linear.

I never complained about it or anything... just noticed it... 4.5MB/s was fast enough heh. It's the latency slow downs in peak hours that were driving me mad... along with the "you're imagining it" responses from tech support.

My god I have just been reading some of the horror stories on the Virgin forum. The response is always the same - I've checked your stats and there is no issue - several days go by - there is an issue and here is your ticket number or whatever - your estimated date is this / or your problem is part of some wider stuffup and we don't have a fix date yet.

I'm so worried that even if they fix my jitter my line will go to crap and I will be stuck with their rubbish service for up to 18 months.

I think I'm going to pull the plug on this experiment and go back to bethere.

Wise idea tbh, virgin are great in areas where the ubr's arnt oversubscribed. Get a bad area and im affraid you will be waiting a very long time for a fix. My 10 mb was useless after 5 pm 10 % + packetloss although virgin said that the utilization wasnt high enough to pass on, go figure!

ive been using the R30 beta, and for the most part, the wireless issues seem to be resolved. It's consistent now at least, but its by no means fixed. I still get dropped connections once or twice a day, which shouldn't be happening, since my laptop is only in the next room.

Getting the 30Mb installed (hopefully!) on the 20th. All depends when I get the keys to my new flat.

Originally had the 30Mb, M TV and M phone for £38.90, but called today to drop the phone and TV as its basically freeview anyway. The guy said as a student, the M Phone is included anyway? I asked if the £28.50 was the total price and he said yes, so I dunno if its some offer or something. Don't really care as I won't be using it anyway!

Should be a nice change from my countryside O2 LLU speeds of 5Mb!

Just remember the 100s and 1000s who have no problems at all.

What percentage of Virgin customers do you think even know what tracert is? Let alone running a full f8lure/ping test. My point is that jitter is sometimes difficult to spot unless you look for it.

If I was to have judged my line by bandwidth it would be perfect. As we both know there is more to a connection than just bandwidth, especially if you are a heavy gamer.

very true but it takes 1 bad node thats 600+ people that have crap connections.. maybe 1 or 2 are PC savvy or gamers and have a clue and they moan thats 598 oblivious people.

For public??? QOS at last i hope...

I did ask VM about QOS\Jumbo Frames ect and they said no :(
They will not turn back on SSH so we can't get to a lot of options the SH had

Mind you I can't wait till someone asks for the R30 firmware to look at ;)

Results after having moved house...

Appear to be not too shabby :)

Also, just found out that 100Mb is available, mmmmmmm....

Anyone gone from 50mb to 100mb? I rang up and got it changed over last night, but my speed hadn't been increased by last night. They said it should be done soon. I have rebooted my moden a few times too.

Hopefully it will be done tonight when i get in else I'm stuck with really bad uploads :( Some reason they have removed the 50mb profile and i'm getting like 20mb speed! Its upload sucks and I can't stream atm :(
