what sort'a mpg do these do?

Didn't the last ones come with Ecutek? Or am I imagining things again? You can bypass the ECU fairly simply on the older models, but the "remap" is little more than boost control.
M
(MY99/00 had 4 pots which aren't really that bad) You can put ECUTEK onto MY99/00 but not 97/98. They really need an aftermarket job.
£1800 will get MY99/00 cars, not first UK version 1995![]()
It doesn't even have the cool seats![]()
It's got the slightly ugly old dashboard![]()
It's brakes will be like pushing cheese(MY99/00 had 4 pots which aren't really that bad)
Your one saving grace is that it might be hiding a TD05 under the bonnet being one of the first proper UK Turbos. But I highly doubt it.

Yes it's more but it's a buyers market and I'd start a £2K and go from there. This is what you should be looking to spend your money on.
Told you you should have asked on Scoobynet first.
Is there anything else I should be checking?

I wasn't looking for vindication of my choice, so your opinion about what I should buy is irrelevant, and I am not going to justify my choice of models suffice to say, you cannot find the kind of car you are talking about at the kind of price you are talking about at a dealer.
Alright mate, put your handbag away.![]()
I think you'll find that A) buying from a dealer will be a waste of time if the engine or gearbox goes bang and B) I'm surprised you couldn't find anything for £1800 other than a bottom of the barrel 1995 UK Turbo.
But as I've clearly over stepped the mark I'll move on.

I may then have need of your help so don't be offended![]()

My apologies.
To be honest, you don't often hear of complaints about the older ones. Theres usually someone upset because something expensive has let go but its usually from about 97 onwards.

You can map it with an ESL daughterboard: http://www.enduringsolutions.com/ You're right though, modding is a slippery slope with these cars (as I have found out) although I don't think the op will want to anyway (other than a brake uppgrade!!)

Went up today, took it for a test drive and the Gearbox was a bit whiney, so knocked him down to £1150.
Drove it home and all seems well apart from the gearbox. It was hesitant when cold, had a misfire, that cleared up when warm so if it isn't the coilpack will be a sensor I would imagine.
Suspension feels taught and has had a lot of new parts on it fairly recently, bottom arms, new rad, lotsa new bushes and new tyres on the rear.
Overall for £1150 I am pleased.
Good work, sounds like a bargain for just over a grand, now just hope that whine is the thrust bearing which shouldn't cost the earth. Then you have yourself a sorted classic scoob. Happy days and many miles of motoring ahead.
but even so, for that money, sticking a new gearbox in won't be a massive hassle.

The noise is mainly in 1st/2nd and louder when you lift off, could well be a thrust bearing hadn't thought of that.
It sounds just like the whine from a Mini or BMC 1100 when you lift off the throttle.
That's what I thought and a good excuse for a 6 speed![]()
Sounds like a thrust bearing to me. Does the noise go away when you clutch in?
