Classic Impreza Turbo

Yup looking to keep this one stock cept maybe the brakes (and larger stock wheels to cope if required)

Didn't the last ones come with Ecutek? Or am I imagining things again? You can bypass the ECU fairly simply on the older models, but the "remap" is little more than boost control.

M

You can put ECUTEK onto MY99/00 but not 97/98. They really need an aftermarket job.

£1800 will get MY99/00 cars, not first UK version 1995 :(

It doesn't even have the cool seats :(

It's got the slightly ugly old dashboard :(

It's brakes will be like pushing cheese :( (MY99/00 had 4 pots which aren't really that bad)

Your one saving grace is that it might be hiding a TD05 under the bonnet being one of the first proper UK Turbos. But I highly doubt it.

Yes it's more but it's a buyers market and I'd start a £2K and go from there. This is what you should be looking to spend your money on.

Told you you should have asked on Scoobynet first.

£1800 will get me a thraped tatty MY00/01 I know I have looked at many around the 2.5k mark.

A few quid on brakes I can change as I have time will be fine, I won't be storming it around like some chav, the brakes will do for now.

I don't want to modify it, I have been looking for a standard one!

I wasn't looking for vindication of my choice, so your opinion about what I should buy is irrelevant, and I am not going to justify my choice of models suffice to say, you cannot find the kind of car you are talking about at the kind of price you are talking about at a dealer.

Is there anything else I should be checking?

Was the limit of the info I was looking for in my original post :)

However I will pop over to scoobynet and ask for things to check, but I expect a lot of similar comments to yours, get newer, **** brakes etc etc.

If now it has a fresh MOT on it there are issues when I drive it, I will walk away :)

Alright mate, put your handbag away. :)

I think you'll find that A) buying from a dealer will be a waste of time if the engine or gearbox goes bang and B) I'm surprised you couldn't find anything for £1800 other than a bottom of the barrel 1995 UK Turbo.

But as I've clearly over stepped the mark I'll move on.

There is no handbags mate, but the only reason I posted details is for people who requested, I am not looking for anyone to vindicate is all I am saying, everyone has their own opinions and some could just come in here and say don't do that, but a fiesta which also wouldn't meet my objectives.

If this turns out to be a dud, I will decide whether I keep looking for similar cars or something newer, I may then have need of your help so don't be offended ;)

I can find other cars, some newer and some cheaper, but most in the 90-150k mileage mark, sometimes you do see a gem pop up and it is gone within 5 mins of the advert. My budget was closer to £1300 as I don't need a daily driver (cycle 2 miles to work) but the dealer has offered me a good P/Ex on my 318is and offered to up the waranty to 12 months for peanuts.

When I start posting about issues feel free to say told you so and I will hoover up the humble pie :D

My apologies. :)

To be honest, you don't often hear of complaints about the older ones. Theres usually someone upset because something expensive has let go but its usually from about 97 onwards.

And usually modified :)

I have a Subaru specialist near me that charges £200 for cambelts and £400 for a clutch, so pretty reasonable IMHO, as they also run a Subaru breakers so can fit and source secondahand parts far lower cost than new as well :)

Insurance on a stock turbo is a paltry £327 fully comp with the RAC, which is no more than I pay for my 318is. Once you mod that cost rises fast!

I have a garage and I will double up the alarm with a decent thatcham approved system.

I did love my Forester it was a peach, 280 bhp on 100 octane or could tootle it about for 30 mpg (auto) :)

Went up today, took it for a test drive and the Gearbox was a bit whiney, so knocked him down to £1150.

:D

Drove it home and all seems well apart from the gearbox. It was hesitant when cold, had a misfire, that cleared up when warm so if it isn't the coilpack will be a sensor I would imagine.

Suspension feels taught and has had a lot of new parts on it fairly recently, bottom arms, new rad, lotsa new bushes and new tyres on the rear.

Overall for £1150 I am pleased.

Good work, sounds like a bargain for just over a grand, now just hope that whine is the thrust bearing which shouldn't cost the earth. Then you have yourself a sorted classic scoob. Happy days and many miles of motoring ahead.

The noise is mainly in 1st/2nd and louder when you lift off, could well be a thrust bearing hadn't thought of that.

It sounds just like the whine from a Mini or BMC 1100 when you lift off the throttle.

Talking to a mate who has put 5 gearboxes in his impreza, as soon as they start to whine they are destined to die, but then he does drive it like a c...

but even so, for that money, sticking a new gearbox in won't be a massive hassle.

Sounds like a thrust bearing to me. Does the noise go away when you clutch in?

That's what I thought and a good excuse for a 6 speed :)

Lol - I won't mod it, honest. It's why I've avoided buying another. I'll just not stop and end up skint like the last 2 times!

6 speed is apparently quite a bit heavier than the 5. Have to up the power a bit to make up for the weight.

Yes it does...

Edd no I am not gonna mod it, would like to fit a newer 5 speed box though as they have the better cases. 98+ iirc.

Was just a joke mate :)

a six speed box including rear diff usually goes for around 2K if you were wondering.

If you catch your 5 speed gearbox before it eats itself, it can be sent away for inspection and costing, they usually come back in the £300-700 range depending on what's wrong and how ham fisted the previous owner was. ;)

Hesitancy / misfire from cold could be anything from a water temp sensor, a lazy lambda to a failing MAF or worse. Get that checked out sooner rather than later by a reputable tuner / indy
