What's it like?

Moving there on Sunday for work. What's good? What to avoid? What is public transport like (metro!?)? Any nice restaurants/bars?

Any general advice for a Londoner moving north? (Take warm clothes?! :()

I moved from Brighton to near Durham and would like to move to Newcastle soon as I work just outside of it. I think it's a fantanstic city! The metro is pretty decent in my opinion but i've only used it a handful of times and there are tones and tones of of amazing sights and things to do when you aren't at work in the city and further affield too.

Where exactly in Newcastle are you moving to? As it will give people a better chance of letting you know what the transport links are like. Entertainment wise these is the Gate in Newcastle with all your generic places to eat like nando's/pizza hut etc and has a cinema and just down the road in Gateshead is the Metro Centre whichi is a massive shopping mall with loads of places to eat as well as a really nice Odeon cinema.

Thanks for your help - I will be in a flat on quayside...pretty near the central station

Geordie Shore is a useful travel guide. It sums the culture up nicely (and I lived there for 3 years).

erm, no, just no

Newcastle tends to have cold wet winters, so a decent jacket and decent shoes you will need.

Lots of great places to eat so you wont go hungry. If you want fresh good value food like meat and fruit the grainger market is the place to go to. Metro is ok, just jam packed like the tube at rush hours. Buses are good too depending on which one you get.

Avoid the Big Market, its nasty (yet at non normal drinking times there are some great little bistros

Well, this is the current weather on the coast here in sunny South Shields!

Metro is far better than the tube! You can stand up straight for one! What contracting are you doing? Near to the place of work? Taking a car?
The traffic on the bridges is pretty bad around half 7 onwards in the morning, and after half 3 on a night time for a couple of hours.

I moved to Newcastle about 3 years ago for work. Great city - loved every minute of being here. Great places to go out include Osbourne road, lots of bars with the buzzer games. Couple of great bars in town are Popollos and The Fourth, make sure you check them out.

My favourite city and I'm not just being biased. It's a fantastic place. Even about 90% of the lads I work with from allover the UK rate it as the best place they've been. You will love it, be sure to socialise and you won't go wrong.

I'm from South Shields too but live in Northumberland now where the public transport isn't so good but Central Station to Longbenton is about 10mins on the Metro. I used to work at Longbenton but work for HP now at Cobalt which is near North Shields.
