AMD Bulldozer Finally!

Maybe AMD are doing the only thing they can do to compete with Intel.

They cant go toe to toe with intel on IPC (why I dont know, just reverse engineer) so they are saying ok, the vast majority of pc buyers dont know anything about ipc but when they see '8 cores' they will be wow'ed so thats the avenue we will chase.

I hope im wrong. Becuase if I was to upgrade from my current quad, I would like to go next gen and that is 8 cores.

But im also now thinking, my current pc, is sufficient for the games coming out in the near future, and I should really wait for a pcix3 mobo, so at least Im set up for next gen gpu's when they are out.

In other words I may skip BD, and see what happens after.

I'm more curious to see if Emulator developers will implement BD's new instruction sets or if they'll get used.

But with such a low IPC, Bulldozers will only be a slight, if at all, improvement over current Phenom II's...:(

Which is why if official reviews confirm what we all fear about Bulldozer, i'll be going for a 2500k as i need the highest performing IPC over 2 cores i can get.

No emulator out there makes very effective use of more than 2 cores..:(

Hmm hopefully every benchmark is fake. :D

AMD don't seem to be too talkative on the subject.

Whatever happens my view is that BD is\was a delayed cpu it was meant to go head to head with the first gen i7's and it's biggest problem now is that the 2500 and 2600k are out. It was never designed to go up against those and as a result is not going to look overly favourable where it would have done against the older i7's. AMD is a step behind right now and BD isn't going to get them back instep with intel we can only hope that BD as an architecture is flexible enough to allow it to compete at some point in the future which i think it is time will tell.

But BD's IPC is looking well slower than even first gen i7's and at that time, there would be literally no programs to make use of 8 cores.
And they brought Phenom II out after the first gen i7's, so BD obviously was no where near ready, as we're years on from then.

Well the low IPC thing does sound beleivable unfourtunalty.

The fact it was delayed, so they could up the clock speeds, is an indicator, that they needed to up the clock speeds to compensate for low IPC.

Sounds like a massive flop if it turns out true.

It changes nothing. Just refreshes the current Phenom 2 line up. A rebranding more than anything and 2 extra cores...

Is there anything about the Phenom 2's that it does well or better in comparison to Intel chip?

Or is it just about price/performance again?

I first remember hearing AMD were working on BD about six years ago so they have been working on this for a longtime and so far it isn't looking like that amount of time has paid off. Of course we might all be wrong and the final release product is a stomper way better then what we think right now but i seriously doubt it.

There's no way in hell every benchmark is fake though :p

Just price/performance, iirc sandy bridge is better in every way except price, although than obviously depends which specific chip you look at.

Tbh a 8 core 5ghz phenom 2 would still be fairly quick in highly threaded apps, so even if ipc is the same its not all bad.

AMD are in trouble.

The only way for them to rescue the situation is to play the "bang for buck" game again.
