Lenovo x121e netbook

I have a HP DV4-1000ea and I have had driver support problems but I can put up with it and I am sure I can adjust to this laptop. It's almost like getting married when it comes to buying a laptop but with the option of upgrading to a new laptop every 3 years :D I have windows Vista so you can understand how much patience I have when it comes to adjusting :)

Battery life is not a concern as I will be using this laptop in the University with access to a plug point.

Does the I3 struggle with the 64 bit W7 or do you think it does well considering it's a ULV.

It does a lot more than just well. A feat in my book, as the laptop's is consuming 11-13W with full brightness & bluetooth/wireless On while writing these lines.

I knew the Sandy Bridge CPUs would be an upgrade, but this is very impressive. The gaming capability is an added bonus.

Agreed, the i3 is surprisingly powerful, it might only be 1.3ghz, but sandy bridge does really well with instructions per clock measures, and it has a large cache.
Windows 7 64bit is absolutely no problem, it runs really smoothly, even on the 320Gb 7200 drive. Swap to an SSD and you have a very very nice machine for not much money.
I've got used to the screen now, and while I would prefer a 16:10, I can live with the weaknesses of the design.

An X61 would still be my recommendation for linux though. Performance will be very similar in everything except 3d graphics, the screen is a little larger, its still very compact and drive support is absolutely perfect.

Thanks for the advice, nixboy.

Has anyone managed to run ubuntu 10.10 on it. I will need to run ubuntu 10.10 with osian desktop on it as part of dissertation.

I was running Xubuntu 10.10 on mine for a while, and the ethernet card does not work at all in it. Wifi drivers are built in though and they work well.

The ethernet port works fine in the latest Gentoo minimal iso though

Got mine a couple of weeks ago with the 128gb ssd (Toshiba HG3 - Reads at 221MB/s :D ) and intel Core i3, 6gb ram.

The battery lasts about 8:30 with low brightness and aero off and everything else on. Also to point out is that by default, it does not come with a 3g card - i think "upgradeable" refers to there being a free mPcie slot next to the wifi card.

Drivers were added in to the kernel around april, so distro's over this age should be ok.

3g connectivity, has been said many times, empty slot and aerial as standard, card to go into it needs to be lenovo mini pci-e.

I have been following this thread for some time and have decided to go ahead and buy one,

I'm looking at the following spec, but wanted to check it was the best deal for the money I was spending and was equally curious if anyone knew of any promotional offers for October to save me some extra money.

Intel Core i3-2357M Processor (1.3GHz, 3MB L3, 1333MHz DDR3)
2 GB DDR3 - 1333MHz (1 DIMM)
320 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
6 cell Li-Ion Battery xx Whr

I was then plan on buying 2x4gb RAM, I was thinking the following Ram would be ok
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT51264BC1339

Would this spec be sufficient for some light gaming from time to time, like minecraft TF2

Finally, anyone know of a nice sleeve thats worth buying?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide

The specs are all fine. Ram wise - yes, should also be fine, I personally just spent a tenner on adding a second 2gb stick. I couldn't see what I'd do with 8gb on a laptop.

Minecraft and TF2 should be playable, don't expect to be able to turn the graphical detail up much. Some seem to be attached to the idea of setting the graphics details up to 11 - in which case you'll need to spend about twice as much cash on a gaming laptop

Sleeve - I'm more than happy with my lenovo sleeve, but i already have a padded bag for it to sit in next to my work PC.

Allnamestaken - yup the x121e is a great all round laptop.. weakest point is the screen - make sure you calibrate it and you're good to go.

Not sure you'll get it for less than £300 though... they tend to be between £300-£400

I saw one with the 1gbz Amd Fusion CPU and the E-350 actualy made it cheaper -_-.......

I customed it with 4gb of ram, that should be fine should it it. let me list off the specs.
