Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [29th October - 2nd November 2011]

I think the players have no confidence in referee's giving blatant fouls anymore hence when they are fouled they'll make a meal of it, it doesn't mean it's a dive though.

Sam Allerdyce basically said the same on goals on sunday a couple of weeks ago. He was saying that when players dont go down they never get the foul so they tend to exagerate in order to show the ref that a foul was committed.

That's funny, it always was when Ronaldo did it.

That's funny its already one when when Suarez ever goes down before anyone sees a replay.
Not much get mentioned of Young's hilarious diving, Downing did a bad one the other week, wonder if they train them to at Villa.

Every club has them. Funnily enough at United i think Nani is/was worse than Ronaldo.

I have no issue with players "making the most" of a dubious challenge but its the out and out diving that really bugs me.

Youngs dive over Milner in the derby was cracking. Even with a slow mo replay not one commentator/pundit mentioned it. Every team has players who bend the rules though, maybe not always for diving, maybe its questionable challenges, shirt pulling, whatever. They get mentioned if players make a career of deceiving the ref.

serious question

Surely any player who exagerates contact and ends up on the floor is a dive

Ie backing into a defender (when the defender doesnt move) and the attacker ending on the floor is a blatant dive

Even in games not vs Utd he does it all the time - he WILL be worse than Ronaldo within a season for that reason alone

Like Andy says, if you don't go to ground then refs won't give fouls. I've said it for years and Suarez saw that for himself vs Stoke in midweek; he was tripped by Shawcross but stumbled to stay on his feet to get a shot on goal while off balance. Suarez was fouled and there was no way that an off balanced shot at an angle was an advantage over a penalty but no penalty was given.

Until refs start making decisions based on challenges rather than the reaction of fouled player then players are going to continue to make a meal of small fouls.

As for the backing into defenders; he doesn't just back into them and then fall to the ground, he backs into them so that they have to jump all over him in order to get to the ball. It's something centre forwards have done for years.

I have no idea what you're talking about in your last sentence.

It's an admirable sentiment but do you really think there will be a time when referees will give a penalty without a player going to ground? There would be a riot.

The odd decision will be given but on the whole I can't see anything ever changing.

From the refs point of view it's sort of understandable, why make a major decision if you have an excuse not too? The fact that there was minimal to no appeals from Liverpool players yesterday was probably the reason why the ref didn't award us our pen. Thankfully the lino had some *******s and gave the pen.

The best solution ive seen is to simply get the ref to ask the player if he dived.

If he says no and gets the foul and the video evidence later shows a dive then give him a 6 game ban. It puts the onus on the player to be honest and also gives a tangible illustration of those that arent. A 6 game ban would concentrate the mind i think!

Nice idea in theory but it would never work. We regularly see incidents where even after countless replays people can't agree on whether something was a foul or a dive.

You've then of course got clubs/players that will happily take the 6 game ban if it meant winning a penalty that would win them an important game.

I dont know that its any worse than the status quo tbh. In the vast majority of cases a player would think twice if he could get a 6 game ban. It might not stop players in League deciders but as it stands they are diving now anyway so we are no worse off.

A 6 game ban would seriously hurt either the player or the club or both. It would also formalise the players "diving" tag. I think within a few weeks players would stop or certainly think twice which at the end of the day is what we all want.

It would also move the responsibility from the ref to second guess the situation to the player to be honest.

Just a thought!

You don't need to allow the player to win a pen - by simply saying they didn't dive - in order to make players think twice about diving. Let the ref make the decisions and review the incident again after the game. If he feels the player dived then the player should be banned and the ban doubles everytime the player is found guilty.

You'll still have problems with consistency though because different people will interpret incidents differently.

As long as you have humans making decisions there will be an inconsistancy up to a point.

If we use my team as an example - If Nani taking a dive led to a 6 game ban a) Nani would have to think twice because he would lose his place in the team and if we won 6 games without him he would struggle to get back in and b) SAF would be furious at the idea of losing a player for 6 games because he dived.

It wouldnt take long beofre the message of "dont dive" got across because its just not worth it.

However it is implimented, it would be a good thing IMO.

The more i read about the Terry/Ferdinand thing the more i believe he isnt racist in any way.

I hate John Terry and i dont think he should be England captain but i really dont think this allegation is particulary correct. I accept i'll be in a minority though.

Loooooooooooooool dirty Leeds!

Cardiff player had his arm out, Leeds player was watching him, then sprinted at his arm (not to where the ball would be even near landing) ran head first into his arm and fell down screaming for a penalty.

Leeds. Dirty, dirty cheating Leeds.

As I said, review the incident after the game and if it's clear they've dived then ban them. If they do it again, double the ban.

I'm not sure why you'd need to take the onfield decision out of the refs hands though. Taggart might be annoyed if Nani was banned for 6 games but if you were drawing with 5 minutes to go, why not throw Owen on and tell him to take a dive (but tell the ref it was a foul - like you're suggesting). I doubt Taggart will be too bothered if Owen gets a 6 game ban :p

As soon as the decision is out of the refs hands it becomes open to abuse.

the blokes done some awful things in the past but i don't think he would be as stupid to do such a thing either. ashley cole ran past the incident, i'm sure even he as a team mate would've got involved has something been said
