Greatest FPS and why?

It depends for me, on the single or multiplayer question. Half-Life edges it for me in the single player stakes, it was new, innovative and just something pure.

Multiplayer wise it is probably Q3 CPMA, closely followed by CounterStrike beta.

Half-Life without a doubt. I'm including counter-strike as part of Half-Life as it was pretty much the de-facto multiplayer side of the game.

Q3: arena
Fast and the only true Pro game which produced the true Pros of online gaming.

and

BF2 + 2142
Jets, heli, tanks, sequad gamplay, commander..etc

Most obvious troll I've ever seen

Definitely. CS consumed a few years of my leisure time, had an absolutely crazy online and LAN competitive environment back in the day. I enjoyed Half life a lot but the online nature of CS was something completely different.

One of my favourite FPS was Wolfenstein 3D, great game. Also played Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, both fantastic.

+1

Best FPS ever, everything else since has failed to even come close. Looking forward to Tribes: Ascend (Beta on 4th November :D )

BF3 is the only thing since then that's really caught my interest and EA screwed it up. i can't wait, not normally a beta fan but i'll make an exeption for this franchise, i wonder if ill get a mid air in the first 5 mins :p

I literally played tribes and tribes only when the first one came out, moved to tribes 2 and never played/bought another game until the servers went down. Loved that game. What worries me about the new Tribes is they seem to be micro payments for items, or that's how its coming across. Keeping my eye on it and hopefully I get in the beta come November.

As for mid air discs, mortars, grens, mines, its scary how quick it all comes back :D Mate still plays on the new servers, i have a shot every now and then :D

hehe got bored with the zerg and how easy the jugg became - no timer on mortar and skiing like a scout in t2 base. a few months of cluster^&*( i left for a more team orientated game. ravenshield 6. pity really classic split the community and killed it imo.

nice to see someone actually knows about tribes and had the pleasure of playing it. i feel sad for some of these youngsters on here they haven't really had any games of that caliber to play, mind you i feel sad for the ones that think quake 3 is the best too :P great game but didnt come close to the skill level and content of tribes games.

and from reading the hi rez forums the ftp thing is actually ftp, you don't have spend money - i gather you'll be able to gain them over time, though i'm betting people will pay to get the stuff faster.

Yeah once the base gameplay came about the community split there and then so ended up playing in both game styles and ladders to get games. Started out with EMS then moved to @ and then merged to become * good times playing Tribes, and the many iSeries lans with the clans :D

Will see what this new one is like and see how many of the old players return to tribes, saying that though they've hyped it to be Tribes of old so lets see if they hit the nail on the head with it.

Yeah Tribes was in a league of it's own. I tried Vengeance when it came out and that was a hack fest and then never got patched and Section 8 I thought would be a replacement and that was poor. I am just hoping the new tribes will be decent. Fair enough FPS games take some skill but then add flight into that and leading your shots over 200+ meters and you have tribes :D

Counter strike.

I think it set the benchmark for FPS of today and it really took the entire world by storm I mean it was huuuuuge in a time where internet was no where near as big as it is now.
It made gaming competively massive and it just set a new level tbh it was so far ahead of anything else out at its time and it still continues to be pretty darn popular today after what 13 years? Something stupid like that.

the forums are full of old names :) anyway NDA will be lifted on the 4th so i'm sure we'll find out more then :p

NK| with luna* Blackwarlord Sasman Ruffle Goretax Darkshadow tangerine(later changed to Tang-) and many more then OAC for a while before banding together to form MC| played wildcards on the ladder a few times though i don't recall seeing any of the demos. mind you i did have 1 HDD that broke with loads of ladder demos on.

hehe wasnt LB in wildcards then moved to MC? always was a clan hopping %$^$%56:P

Tribes 2 would probably be my choice.

Being able to play different classes with different loadouts and general pace depending on your mood was the biggest appeal for me, and couple that with how freely you could move around in any direction rather than being stuck to ground like a lot of the other shooters felt at the time was just awesome.

The spinfuser weapon is probably still my favourite weapon of any game I have played too.

Half-Life 2

Its an classic game, has everything that is required, A great storyline and well engineered graphics that hasn't been a console port.

Playing through Ravenholme, still gets me going :D

For single player, I'd say Half-life was the best. It had an atmosphere that no other FPS had managed before it. After this, I'd say Far Cry was very close to having the same immersion. All the sequels failed completely compared to these originals.

Though in this day and age, it's hard to get excited about single player anything, so I'm going to say Counter-Strike was the best. If you were good at this game, it was so rewarding. No game since has had the same balance and refined, simplistic skill as this one, not BF3, not COD.

Roll on CS:GO next year :)

I'd have to go with Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Was one of my favourite team FPS games. I spent hours on that game and even took up playing in some clan matches which where always fun.

The game was free, which i thought was incredible for such game play.

Not been an FPS to capture me the way this did since.

Multiplayer wise Rainbow 6 ravenshield.

Everything was perfect.

The health system
The map design and size
The game modes
The weapon balance
The accessories
Ran very very well on most systems
Netcode was fantastic
Promoted team play by design

This. Couldn't agree more.
