Lenovo x121e netbook

There is a code back on, X10%NOV. It is advertised on the site.

Have just ordered one to replace my HP mini 311c which is struggling now.

Thanks, I don't know how I missed that, it's on the home page! :o

Also just in case you didn't know, it looks like they are doing free delivery now, I paid £15 on first order!

Screen problem on resume

Had this for a few weeks now and this is the 2nd time it's happened. Sometimes coming out of sleep mode the screen doesn't come back - it's on as the brightness changes but no picture. Holding down the power button doesn't help as I can hear it reboot but still no picture appears.

Only fix seems to be a convoluted system of pulling the battery, plugging it into mains, turning on, turning off, putting battery back in and turning on again! Have tried just leaving battery out for 15 secs, holding down power button for 15 secs etc but the above sequence is the only one that works.

Any ideas chaps? May be time to send for a replacement as this is really annoying when it happens as you can imagine?

Have you tried hitting Fn+F4 instead on relying on lifting the lid?

Has anyone done a BIOS update on their machine. The fan sometimes annoys me , what settings have you changed on TPFanControl ?? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Problem seems to have got worse now in that I can't get a picture on the screen at all. Tried pulling battery, running off mains, ctrl-alt-del etc. Can tell it's restarting etc but nothing ever appears on screen even at bootup. However the FN brightness keys work so it's not totally dead.

Reckon it needs to go back. Only problem is support line is only mon-fri 9-5 I think? Doesn't help much as I'm at work then and can't exactly spend an hour on the phone with them in the office!

On mine, TPFC turns the fan on when the cpu hits 70 degrees, so it barely ever spins up - and that's by default (haven't changed any settings). Otherwise just set it to manual and turn the fan off completely. It turns back on by itself when it gets too hot anyway.

How have people who have had problems got on with communicating with Lenovo?

I placed an order for a red one as I thought it would be nice for a change from the regular black. Within a few hours I had found reports of the surface being different and flaking easily. I immediately cancelled the order but have not had any response! Received the slip case I ordered yesterday and got a notification of shipment of the laptop today.

The order processing time is good but lack of communication is not! They have likely lost a sale from me now, don't think I will bother with a replacement order for a black one. If they ignore potential customers I am not too confident they will treat actual customers any better.

It's best to ring them on the number provided in the order confirmation. The people on the phone are generally very helpful.

The UK number is +44 2030140095 and you'll need your order number handy.

My original order never showed (due to the 2367m upgrade) so I rang them (after emailing and receiving no response). They cancelled it and applied a further 10% discount to my re-order with the upgraded processor. :)

I'm just waiting for the replacement order to ship now.

Cheers, I did that shortly after posting, I didn't see the 0203 number at first, I wasn't prepared to use an 0844 one.

To be fair the guy was good when I phoned, he raised the RMA to return which I should receive within 48 hours. To be honest the lack of SATA 3 has put me off as I wanted to stick a decent SSD in it, another 10% would sway me though :D

Right, got the i3-2367 one.

I just stuck in the 2GB I had from my previous purchase and its good to go.

So, with 4GB under the bonnet and the new processor, it feels as quick as my 2357 one, I can't spot any increase or decrease. Only difference is that the Windows experience score (processor) rose to 5.2 from 4.9 it was with the older processor.

Quality seems to be better in this one as well - I seriously think that Lenovo QC must be suffering big time. Reason for this is:

Trackpad now works just fine. No jumping, no skiping, it just works a lot better in this machine than my 1st one. Its not perfect, but it is not crap as it was on my 1st machine. Same drivers, same everything.

I will be contacting Lenovo and try to send the 2357 one for a repair I think.

Having said that, I would still recommend the little bugger; its now for sale for £340 or something. I can't still find something as quick for that amount.

Hi guys! I wanted to buy the x121e with the amd e-450 but in my country they sell (for now) only the red version, which probably has the surface problem. Does the black one have the same problem? Thanks!

Well thanks for all the useful posts guys, after skimming through most of the posts in this thread I just bought myself an i3-2367 x121e with the bog standard 2GB of RAM, 320GB HDD and the Intel Wifi option. I was toying with an X220 but in the end I couldn't justify the cost over the X121e for what I want to use it for - I hope I made the right choice!

I basically want a laptop that can travel with me easily and not take my luggage into chargeable 10KG+ territory with my weekly flights (I already have to carry a work supplied dell which is BIG and locked down :(). I also need, and this is key, something that can handle all my development requirements (both windows and linux) and I figure this will just about cut it - I may get away with digital photo software too me thinks.

I'll be installing 7 Ultimate on it first off, followed by Arch Linux soon after. I'll also upgrade to 8GB shortly and SSD later on - is crucial the best place to shop for these upgrades? Their prices seem reasonable enough.

If I figure anything out on the Linux front that might be useful or find any good options for upgrades I'll be sure to post them here...thanks for all the useful info guys!

Cheers

Nah, the black one has no coating, it is the base material so no flaking ;)

I'm sure you'll get on fine with it, I also have to lug a ridiculously heavy work Dell for my weekly flights and the 11.6" HP I had before was really easy to carry and very lightweight!

I'd imagine that most digital photo software should work well, I had Lightroom working well enough on a ULV Core 2 Duo 1.4Ghz so I'm sure this i3 should fly through it!

Try the HP DM1 it now has the e450, I've just ordered one after a play with the dm1 e350 variant, decided it felt more robust than the x121, downside is itonly comes with 32bit windows but with 4Gb as standard and coming in cheaper than the x121, its not too bad.

I have recently been looking for a cheap netbook (specifically Samsung NC110 or Asus 1015PX for about £250) but have just found this thread and am now having second thoughts!

I would really like to go for the basic Intel model, but, once a decent battery is added, it comes to about £390, which I can't really afford. However, I have been able to find an AMD model for £330 with the following specs...

* AMD Fusion Dual Core (E-350) 1.6GHz processor with 1MB L2 cache
* 4GB (1333MHz) DDR3 memory
* 320GB (5400RPM) Hard Drive
* 11.6 inch WXGA TFT HD LED backlit with AntiGlare
* Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
* AMD Radeon HD 6310 graphics (Integrated in E-350 processor)
* Primary Battery 6 Cells

Any thoughts on how this would compare to the Intel model with the basic Core i3-2367M (1.4GHz, 3MB L3, 1333MHz DDR3) processor? Key differences I can see are the processor (obviously), graphics and extra RAM. Can anyone provide a link for a benchmark or real-usage comparison?

Also, performance-wise, I'm assuming either ThinkPad X121e would be a significant step up from the netbooks I mentioned... is this right?!

Thanks for any advice!

At this point, you can get the i3 one from lenovo at £350 with the 10% reduction - including free delvery. Going for the AMD one would be rather silly. The Intel one is pretty much 100% faster. The AMD is still a lot better than an Atom-powered netbook, but the i3 is properly powerful.

I would go for the intel one and add 2GB of memory for £10 from crucial if I were you.

+1 with what scylos has already mentioned, you can get a basic spec i3 version from lenovo almost at the price you see the 4GB AMD version for...

I just got an i3 with the lowest cost ram and HDD options and some basic additional extras e.g. 2GB, 320GB, 6 cell battery, fingerprint reader, camera, intel wifi etc for £362 (10% off plus free delivery), I am well chuffed!...I plan on installing 8GB ram soon after purchase (2x4GB from Crucial is cheaper than having the 4GB upgrade as part of the purchase plus 4GB from crucial, 8GB of compatible memory is less than £40 from most places). I may also get an SSD later on down the line but I want to see the prices drop and capacity go up first, they're way over priced for me right now!

I'd definately recommend doing something similar, you can add some more RAM later on when you've got some spare cash but if you go AMD there isn't a lot you can do about performance other than buying a new model with an i3 ;)...I'm sure you wont regret going with the i3 version!

Yes you're quite right... thanks for pointing it out.

However, to complicate things further, I have just come across the the Lenovo IdeaPad S205 which can be had for £280...

* Processor: AMD Dual-Core E350 1.60 GHz
* Operating System: Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
* Display: 11.6 inch WXGA high-definition LED backlight, 16:9 widescreen (1366 x 768)
* Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6310M
* Memory: 2 GB DDR3 DRAM 1066 MHz (8 GB max.)
* Hard Drive: 250 GB 5400 rpm SATA
* Sound: Stereo speakers with sound enhancement
* Integrated Communications: 3 x USB 2.0, 6-in-1 card reader, headphones, mic, VGA, HDMI, Bluetooth
* Camera: 1.3 MP integrated web camera
* Weight: 1.48 Kg
* Dimensions (WxDxH): 290 x 193 x 18-26.3 mm
* Battery: 6 cell

Obviously it wouldn't compare with the Intel ThinkPad X121e, but it does compare favourably with a similarly priced netbook. I guess I just need to decide whether to go for price or performance... simple right?!

The Intel one is pretty much 100% faster. The AMD is still a lot better than an Atom-powered netbook, but the i3 is properly powerful.

I'll have a look for a comparison, but I'd still appreciate it if anyone could provide a relevant link.

Thanks for sharing. I think if I do choose to go down the performance route then I'll do something similar.
