So I bought a Bonsai Tree

It seems that the 'soil' has to be kepy slightly moist all the time (a bit like orchids) which is why a lot die I think, as they get neglected, and then just become too dry.

No doubt I will find out in a week or so!

Five weeks later and after its first pruning, should have taken a before shot really, as I had to take a fair ammount of leggy shoots off. Ah well will do that when I take the next picks in spring.
Really like yours btw Tony Williams, brilliant trunk.

Well that is true of the variety I have, a Banyan, though I believe they are all different.
I just give mine a few pumps of pure water spray daily, to keep it slightly moist as you say, also every few days spray the whole thing, again with pure water.

As I mentioned earlier, I picked up a nice Chinese Elm about a month ago, with an attractive 'S' shaped trunk, a bit like Tony's picture above, but within 10 days or so the leave started dropping, leaving a sticky residue on the shelf, so I guessed it had some sort of a bug.

I was advised to give it a 'dose' of rose spray, which seemed to work, but then virtually every single leaf fell off!

I kept the soil damp though, and in the last week loads of new shoots have started to appear on just about every 'branch' which has given me some encouragement, but also surprised me a bit, as I didn't think anything would happen before next Spring.

If it continues to grow at its current rate, it will probably want a bit of trimming before too long!

Ours hasn't died yet!

However a lot of bonsai 'experts' advise against using products such as Baby Bio, and recommend that you use one that is specifically formulated for use with bonsai trees.

A quick Amazon searh should produce a few!

Sup,

Today I have developed the strange urge to keep and grow a bonsai tree in my room. Not really sure where it came from but the more I research the notion, the more I like the idea of it.

Pretty gay but nevermind.

Anyway, I've been looking around and like this one:

Any tips? Particularly tips about whether the tree I like is suitable for a first timer and how difficult it will be to keep it alive.

Cheers.

How's that bad boy doing now?

One of these would look great on my new desk. Will have a read through this thread in a while :).

You can get some pretty cool looking ones.

I love the ones that literally look like a normal tree but downscaled! I even saw a couple of apple, orange and all manner of other fruited bonsai trees.

The only shame is that a lot of the coolest ones I've found need to be grown outdoors.

Never thought I'd be enthusiastic about something like this though, I honestly don't know where it's coming from.:o

Ok here is mine now: it's lost a lot of leaves over Winter but I hope to get it growing back, btw months ago it looked worse.

Dayyyyyyyymmmmmmmm. I do recommend using proper BONSAI feeder and not ONE SIZE FITS all also. Bonsais tend to die completely in 6month for most people as they are hard/high maintence. I am hoping I can get mine lookin' better again.

By the way this Bonsai was my first ever plant and I have gotten other ones (plants) about 3 midsize ones and a catus and 2 mini catuses - I might buy more small plants once I do my room up as I am adding shelves. oh yeah and I like lucky bambo got a big one with 3 and a small l. bam with about 8. Maybe start a "your plants thread" I might later.

Readup on bonsai fourms. I would like to learn more on them and oneday make my own Bonsai. I would like an oval dish and a bonsai that grows straight up and has branches going across and planted off centre and get an ornement like a buddah or gnome in the space - or just a rock.
