The "All-Things-Guitar" Thread

Anyone got Guitar Pro? Any thoughts if so?

A mate was talking to me about it today and quite tempted as a Christmas pressie to myself

If you look back through threads you will see I'm a massive fan and always tell people to add it to their budget.
In all the 41 years I've been playing guitar, Guitar Pro is easily the most amazing piece of software to learn songs very quickly.
Even my 10 year old nephew is using it and last night he showed me the main lead riff of Sweet Child Of Mine and he's only been playing about 2 months.
It is a wonderful program and the first thing both my bands put on when learning a new song.
I've even got Guitar Partner on my ASUS Transformer so I can show them stuff at gigs.

Yes guitar pro is worth getting. If you do get it, search online for any current promo codes - I got about 40% off the rrp by doing this.

Line 6 POD pro, yea or nay?

Seriously, I'm looking at this for some studio work and does anyone have any experience with it? Seems pretty good and if the smaller PODs are anything to go by it should be handy.

Once you've bought Guitar Pro, do you have to buy tabs? Or do you get them for free from Ultimate Guitar?

Also, can you pretty much get any song you want? Or is it quite limited?

Well I don't pay for any tabs, I just use the ones from Ultimate guitar/ 911 tabs or w/e google throws at me.
There seems to be a pretty wide range, well known songs tend to be tabed fairly well, however some more obscure stuff/ new stuff can either be tricky to find, non existant or just plain wrong.

The only Guitar Pro file I haven't found is Be Bop Deluxe - Maid In Heaven.
I've found a few tabs but I don't know how to convert into Guitar Pro.
I've done a little bit at a time but not good enough.

I'll keep repeating this.
Guitar Pro is the greatest teaching aid ever for guitar, bass and keyboards besides having a person in front of you.
My nephew has even used it for the drum score.

Thanks dude, I'll definitely check it out in that case :)

Yeah Guitar Pro is definitely the way forward. You can loop sections of songs, slow them down, mute instruments etc.

I've been playing guitar for almost 3 years now. I've got 3 very nice acoustics and 1 electric, although it's a cheap strat copy. Hope to get a new electric within the next few months, perhaps for my birthday.

This has inspired me to learn guitar. I think I will get a Pacifica 112 or 012, and then one of those Line 6 mini pods so I can play through the PC or through headphones. Anyone else used a pod before?

I used to have a POD and then sold it for a FloorPOD which is used as a backup pedal in case any amps blow up on stage and we have to go straight into the PA (it has happened twice).
In the house I use the Line 6 KB37 Toneport.

Is this the right tab for a major scale? Would this be a good one to learn first?

http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/m/misc_scales/major_scales_tab.htm

I don't think those are the easiest scale shapes, nor do I think you should bother with 'scales' much at this stage in your playing.

I would concentrate on learning to play songs that you want to learn. Your general skill will improve and it will be enjoyable throughout. Don't make the experience a chore by doing something dull!

What sort of songs are you playing at the moment?

Realised they are the wrong ones, seems like the minor pentatonic scales are best to start with, so been testing them. I feel it's a valuable thing to do as 'practice', alongside the more fun stuff learning songs that I like.

I've been playing the intro and main riff of Enter Sandman, and I know it's way too advanced for me, but I have an AWESOME preset for Pink Floyd, so I'm learning the solo to Time at the moment. Got the first little bit down already though, it sounds awesome. If I learn it all my girlfriend will want to ride me as soon as I play it. She loves Pink Floyd.

Really having a lot of fun now, feel like NOW is the time to take my basic understanding and actually get better and learn some songs :)

Getting those bends in tune on demand takes practice but it is a great solo to play. Huge tone!

Yeah you're right, playing it is hard enough, but making sure the bends are right is really tough as well. It's fun though, especially as the sound is so spot on with regards to the preset I'm using :)
