What do you use now, just out of interest? I have nothing against the M520s as I've used them for a year with no problem, but they are a fair bit weightier than the Eggbeaters and that's what's leaning me.

Just looked at a video, didn't realize they worked quite like that, just assumed they were a slight variation of SPD.

I have to say though, i've never, ever had an issue with clipping in to M520s, two sided is enough for most people, though i do see the benefit of 4 sided.
 
I commute with M520s and they've served me fantastically well so far. Having at least double sided entry is essential for a commute imo...much easier getting away from lights and roundabouts.

And yes they are quite heavy at 420g per pair, but then if the average cyclist weighs say 80Kg and if you compare it to some pedals weighing say 300g, then you are talking about less than 2% difference.

Regarding shoes, I bought some exposed cleat multi-compatible versions from dhb, and while the shoes themselves are ok (bar the velcro getting caught in the clips sometimes) I wish I'd gone for an option that hid the cleats, as the exposed cleat is very annoying for walking. You have to take them off when you get home before you get in the house, when you get to work before you're in the building, you get frosty looks from publicans if you don't take them off, etc.

I've got Look Keo Sprints on the commuter and Keo Max2 Carbons on the weekender.

I go though about 4 sets of cleats a year and I occasionally miss my clip-in but not very often and I've become adept a pedalling with the shoe on the pedal rather than clipped in.

I started with spds for commuting and Keos for the weekend, but I got sick of swapping pedals over.

I use cleat covers when I'm off the bike.
 
I also swapped from SPDs to the larger platform of SPD-SLs for my commute - the smaller cleats were really aggravating the joint of my big toe and no amount of tinkering could solve it. The SPD-SLs are slightly trickier to clip into but they feel 1000x better once in.
 
Just looking at a bike advert on gumtree...guy wants ~£500 for a Raleigh Avanti U6 Pro:

Not loving the guy's decor, nor particularly the colour of the frame tbh...but looks aside, do you think the bike is decent and the price reasonable? This would be my commuting bike to replace a Carrera Subway.

Carbon forks, seat and chain stays, Shimano 105 group set.

Reasonable or not?
 
Mate of mine has just bought an Avanti frame to replace his Ribble Sportive that he snapped whilst racing. Just dropped him an email to find out what he thinks of the bike and what he paid for the fameset.

Aaaah... I think you might need drop brakes for those. See what they're like when they arrive but I think they're going to point downwards. Bar-ends are usually for straight-ended bars.

Personal observation, I wouldn't want to commute on low spoke count wheels like those. I don't even like low spoke count wheels on my road bike, snap a spoke and the wheel generally goes so out of true it can't turn in the frame.
 
Right, mate paid £150 for his frame set which he reckons was a very good deal.

He say's it's no lightweight but it is comfy and he's had no problems racing on it. He said it's pretty stiff to and he found it a lot less flexy than his Ribble.

Good God! Just noticed the spoke count! Spokes aren't heavy people!

True, but considering my bike is 7.9kg (if I remember rightly), the pedals do add a significant difference to that. And it makes my carbon bottle holders etc seem pointless :p.

Mine arrived today, looking forward to trying them out on the way home. I ordered a pair in black but they'd run out by the time they processed my order, so I went with the white as an alternative. While they do look nice (as far as bib shorts go, that is), I'll be wearing them under shorts and a jersey so nobody will ever see them anyway. If they're as good as Streeteh suggests, I'll probably buy more to replace the dhb padded shorts I've almost worn out.
 
It was raining today and was my first real test of the Crud Roadracers. I still got wet on top because it was raining but it was SOOOOOO much better not having soaked pants, soaked feet and spray in the face. Cheers to Saundius Maximus!

Does anyone know if these fit around 23mm tyres and (more importantly!) disk brakes? Would like to get some form of easy to fit mudguards.

They'll fit the tyres but I've heard mixed things regarding disc brakes, some people say they will fit and some say they won't. From what I can see from my set it would be doable but may require some bodging.
