For those who have not given blood, providing you can put up with a bit of discomfort when they pop the needle in it's not a big deal. Since you're lying flat it requires effort to see the needle.
Went with a housemate on his first donation, the look on his face when they denied him a hot drink was priceless.

I've been meaning to do it for ages now, just never got round to doing it 
The sight of blood of even thinking about it is enough to make people feel faint or pass out. This is usually something that gets better with time. First time I did work experience in a theatre I nearly passed out in the anaesthetic room etc but now I've seen some pretty horrible stuff and it's not phased me.
I suggest trying to give blood with a positive attitude, maybe tell the person who's taking blood you fainted last time so they're extra nice to you
An update for any skydivers. I saw my GP and there a few things that can help reduce recovery times from giving blood. I'm on 400mg of Iron a day now so when I give blood I will only have to avoid jumping for 2 weeks instead of a month.

Yeah, do this. The nurse who put me on the bed had been told it was my first time and she was really nice to me. She wouldn't even let me watch the needle go in even though I told her I have no problem with needles at all. She was hot too.
Did my first platelet donation on Monday. All went well, in and out in less than 75 minutes. I have a very good count apparently so they'll do a couple more double donations and if it stays as high they'll get me to do triples. Next session booked for Easter Monday
I have the same problem, needles and blood don't bother me the slightest but for some reason as soon as blood is drawn i go faint
and i have no idea why...
I tried to donate in Ireland when I lived there but I wasn't allowed because I had lived in England during the BSE outbreak. I still got my free bottle of Guinness though

I hate this excuse... really... you tollerate needles when you need them but what about people needing your blood? if you were dying and needed blood would you refuse it because you hate needles?
people who donate should consider registering with the bone marrow too, the likelyhood of you actually getting a match is in the very rare % but its the fasct you could potentially save someone and just putting it out there incase

I used to do triples, but I bounced in and out of the platelet count range required so now I'm down to doubles. Do they do local anaesthetics for platelets there? They used to here, but stopped for new donors (and older ones who didn't mind) a year or two ago.

No local anaesthetic. Was that for when they put the needle in? Can't say I really felt any discomfort, just a small scratch when they inserted the needle.
Before we go away on exercise/detachment we have to have a medical from the doctor to ensure we are fit to go away etc. My last medical the doctor noticed my blood group and got really angry that I didn't give blood. I'm B negative and apparently only about 2-3% of the population are this blood type.
