GAME lose another supplier

thought i'd chip in on this one ... while ive stpped buying stuff in game a long time ago , i agree having them on the high street is a good thing. keep the big retaisl stores in check , and they keep prices low ( the other retailers that is ).

i say this as HMV disappeared from our town a month back , and since then Blu ray movies have gone up in price in asda and tesco due to lack of i.m.o a higher priced ( in general ) retailer. must have added about £3 - £5 on the price . not a happy bunny :(

and this will apply to games to if GAME disappears

No sign of trouble card wise in Game or Gamestation in the Manchester Arndale. They're doing 25% extra on trade ins when you trade 3 or more games. Guess they're looking for high margin trade in stock. Some weird pricing going on though... They had Fallout 3 goty for £5 while arkham asylum was £18. Wut.

Streaming games provider Gaikai has partnered with GAME to offer a streaming demo service on the retailer’s website beginning this spring.

GAME says that the move forms “a significant part of our strategy to grow revenues from its web and digital business”.

There’s no sign, though, of GAME trying to directly monetize itself through the offering of streaming games services. Instead, the Gaikai deal seems designed to act as an extra incentive for those looking to either download or purchase a physical game.

“Gaikai's ground-breaking game streaming technology fits in well with our strategy of delivering the very best range of games and gaming products to our customers,” GAME CEO Ian Shepherd stated.

“We are thrilled to offer our consumers the ability to instantly preview game titles right at that critical moment of the purchase decision making and checkout process.”

Gaikai EVP Robert Stevenson added: “We are extremely pleased to be working with GAME across Europe to help them expand their digital presence and engagement with online consumers by streaming Gaikai’s portfolio of high quality content.

“As gamers continue to increase their digital consumption of the industry’s best games, GAME will be well positioned to lead the way.”

It's a coincidence - prices for entertainment products are set by head office and are, in most circumstances, the same for all stores.

Seems to me that there is a market still for a Game Retailer but that GAME need to drastically cut back their stores, I know everyone has an example of where there are "2 stores in stones throw distance away" and it does seem pointless.

I will really miss GAME if it goes, granted I don't buy as many games as I used to (and for PC I tend to just use Steam) but if GAME goes we're going to be left with Supermarkets which only ever stock at best the top 15-20 games at a time and even HMV has said they're scaling back their games sales.

Close all the gamestation and concession stores (I know they are doing this now). That should get rid of most of the multiple stores in small areas issue.

I have bought the odd game from Game and done some trade ins at Gamestation although not for at least 12 months.

Personally I have always noticed the gamestation stores like really crappy. Cheap branding/logos and very "indie" looking. The Game stores have always looked more "professional" to me (based on ones I have been in).

Also maybe they should have web and store prices the same and do a reserve and collect service. At the moment they have 5 tiers of prcing (Game instore, GS instore, GS online, Game online and gameplay online(until this week)).

I'm pretty sure one of their recent press releases in light of problems was that there overdue 'click and collect' service was coming soon. That certainly could mean that the games sold online would match store prices if you do it that way.

I totally agree about Gamestation though... sure they are already making cutbacks and have announced store closures, but I don't understand why they don't just scrap Gamestation and have just one brand.

Probably because there's less of them :) I got F3 GOTY for £12 and that was almost two years ago.

This is one of the most frustrating things about the Game shopping experience, not being able to buy a game in-store for the same price as on-line (or being able to check prices on-line). I know why they do this but as as shopper I find it very irritating.

I saw a game on the website a while back for £28.99 so I walked into town thinking it would be a couple of quid more expensive, it was £42.99! The Sainsbury's metro directly opposite was selling it for £35.

If you are going to charge significantly more than online and more than your immediate bricks and mortar competitors you need to add some value for the purchaser, which is something Game don't/can't do.

I used to go in every Friday and check out the new releases but I stopped after I got annoyed with the shop staff constantly coming up and asking me if I need help. If there's one thing guaranteed to put me off buying it is people pestering me whilst shopping. Its got a lot worse since the shops now seem much less busy than they did a few years ago.

I can't see how they can come back from this long term. Hard core gamers are not going to risk pre ordering items from Game if they are going to be cancelled the day before release because they cant get stock. If they don't get the popular games in store then the causal gamers aren't going to have anything to buy and no reason to go in.

It's not as easy as that, The Concession stores are easy as they won't really be paying a lease on a property so can just pack up and may have to pay out of a contract with the main store (something along those lines)

But the Gamestation stores they will have a lease on which they will need to sell or keep paying both of which in this climate aren't much of a option.

Ouch! After I saw that bankers bailed them out, I thought they were going to get their act together and maybe recover. Now losing all future EA titles has pretty much finished them. Still not surprised though.

Quite a few stores are saying it so must have some legs?

Anyway to share an experience i had recently.
Went to buy SSX, got told no luck unless i pre-ordered, both GAME and Gamestation only had 4 delivered for each platform which didn't even cover pre-orders. Manager informed me that some people who pre-ordered had to be turned away with only a deposit refund for comfort on the day of release because they just didn't get stock due to the fallout with EA.

My local store are useless.

Went in the week before the Vita release to see the offers.
They had nothing on show and was told they were waiting to see what the competition where doing before announcing.

Walked 50 metres in the same shopping mall to hmv and got a great deal offering free Uncharted game. Pre ordered it right away, paid and even come day of release GAME were not even close with the offers they had.
Part of the problems seems to be online sales and supermarkets the market hads changed and they just can't seem to compete.

I won't be surprised to see many stores going if they decide not to pull the plug on them all.
