** LATE BUT IN FASHION: SAMSUNG G700 GAMING LAPTOP ARRIVING TOMORROW! **

is Intel RST reporting SATA 6Gb/s for your newly installed ssd or are you having the same SATA 3Gb/s issue as genoma?

I have not checked mate...too be honest it is so fast I don't really care whether it's 3gb or 6gb...

Anyway I am returning the laptop so they can send me another one, but with a hopefully functioning battery!

Sounds like a faulty battery to me?

Anyone got thoughts on upgrading this to 16GB Ram and to a SSD drive? For a gaming laptop its disappointing that it comes with a 5400RPM Harddrive.

What ram and sdd would you guys recommend? I'm thinking a 128gb SDD for win7 install and games installed with everything else going onto the spare hd.

Sounds faulty mate if you did the things I said, also does the laptop charge if turned off and the front LED goes orange when charging ? If it does not it could be not just the battery at fault but something else related to the charging so I would send it all back mate.

8GB is enough for any game currently available, remember most games are stil 32bit code and can only access 4Gb of ram so more than 8Gb for gaming currently is not needed, 16Gb is needed for any 64bit application really that requires a lot of ram to function and the main reason I updated to this laptop was it can take 16Gb of ram too and I have some very power and Ram hungry applications I run. If you only game not worth add ing the 16Gb RAM it will just sit their idle doing nothing and eating battery power for no reason.

I'm planning on playing Tera and it is very resource hungry, especially when running Fraps, but i'll take this into consideration, might just get a SSD, do we know which drives will run at 6GB/s with this laptop?

Just a quick question.

Since i'm returning the laptop, they want me to restore it to the original factory settings before i send it back...so do i basically remove the ssd and put the old hard drive back in again? do i have to do anything else?

Also when i get my replacement laptop, if i put the ssd drive back in again will it work straight away since it already has windows and all my programs installed?

thanks

YES put the old drive back in and then when it posts click the F key that says restore on the POST screen and follow the instructions for the full restore. If you didn't use the original Windows setup on the Samsung hard drive just leave it as is then, they basically want you to clear you login information and any wireless passwords you may have setup etc etc, but it is very easy to restore to factory settings if you watch the POST screen it has a function for it aslong as you didn't delete the restore partition.

YES, you won't have to do anything, it will come back as you have it now.

thanks

thanks Purgatory.

I didn't install windows on the original 750gb hard drive, so I guess it's just a case of swapping it back.

Phew! I thought I would have to reinstall everything again.

Thinking of buying this around the 12th this month.
Couple of wee questions if anybody can help.

I assume i can connect this to my samsung 40inch tv via hdmi to play games? Also, could I play footy manager on this using on my lap or is it just too big and heavy?

Was looking at one of the 15inch MSI laptops but with all the features of the Samsung(3d etc) and the vat back offer it seems a bit of a no brainer to plump for the samsung. Also how loud are the fans playing skyrim etc.

It's would be fine for me its not that heavy.

I had my sammy delivered on friday. Been having a play about with it over the weekend. I have to say I very impressed with it. The screen is amazing and by far one of the best I have seen on a laptop. The 3D is not bad, im not a huge fan of 3D but its a nice addon to have. The build quality is damm nice looks very well made. The laptop does come with the 3D software already installed so thats good of them.

Its not as heavy as I was expecting it to be. I havnt really tried any big cames on it yet either. Been playing Trine 2 over the weekend on it :p and it plays that very well. I quite like the setting dial. I had the laptop in Turbo/gaming mode while playing Trine 2 and it never skipped a beat. Im sure it will help more with more CPU/GFX intense games.

Overall very happy with the purchase. I got some Hyper X Ram which I plan to put in over the weekend and will also put in my SSD too. Which should give it a real nice speed boost :)

Yes, this is the reason I wanted a gaming laptop so to be able to game on the Plasma TV and not have to shift a desktop into the living room, it works great ;).

The laptop is very quiet I find even when fully stressed. I don't notice the fans unless I try to listen for them.

Figures. Desktop has USB2 and E-sata, Caddy has USB2 and E-sata, G700 has USB2 and USB3. A Venn Diagram of that lot leaves me on USB2, unless I upgrade both the caddy to a usb3+Esata model. Thought E-Sata would have lasted a bit longer than it has tbh. Bit annoying but not the end of the world. Is USB3 backwards compatabile such that I could still plug a USB3 caddy into a USB2 port if I needed to?

Yes USB3 is backwards compatabile with USB2 and USB1 and their minor version upgrades inbetween. This is the great thing about USB they make sure they remain backwards compatabile.

Lowest common denominator (most compatible, cheapest) is likely to win out. That is USB.

Exactly.

Should there be a separate warranty card in the box? I have a warranty booklet in about 10 languages but no card and no obvious slip to fill in the booklet either. Part of the VAT back deal is to "fill in and return the warranty card". If someone has one could you scan it, blanking out your own details of course and upload it somewhere?

No Warranty card too, just the booklet in the many languages. You may need to call Samsung and ask them for one or they may know there is no warranty card with this Laptop.

Does anyone know what size Phillips you need to change the hard drive in this??

Just ordered one and a 256gd SSD, both are arriving tomorrow and I want to make sure I have the right screw driver straight away and not have wait around while I order one.

Thanks
