Are the white walkers not the army of the king beyond the wall? I'm confused

Without posting any spoilers - no. The people beyond the wall (who have a king) are wildlings - like Osha the woman who attacked Robb and Bran in the woods in series 1, she said the reason they had come south was to escape the white walkers. They are just people who don't want to live under the rules of the 7 kingdoms - a lot of the inspiration for GOT is said to come from the Wars of The Roses - the wildlings would be akin to the Scots.

That hasn't been established in the TV series yet, so I hope nobody who has read the books will answer your question!

Edit: Never mind.

Thought this was established in season 1, white walkers stalk further and further south as winter approaches, nanny told bran the tales.
We saw one in the original prologue to season 1. Or the mess one could make.
We have been told in s2e2 that the king beyond the wall is a man, an ex ranger who forsook his vows, mance rayder.

So a man isnt like to be the one controlling the walkers since they've been around for the history of westeros.

I am actually really glad I decided to hold off from reading this series, so everything that happens in each series is unexpected. Loved every episode so far! :D

I've been reading the books, but I'll add to this.

It's just brilliant to see (HBO do another) really top quality show, I mean each episode oozes class in every aspect of it's production.

the not so good:

- The story is diverging significantly from the book, this isn't necessarily bad but I get the impression it's been done to keep costs down.
Yes, I was a bit confused several times throughout the episode when things happened that didn't in the book. I hope they don't change it too much!

Completely agree, thought about starting the books after the first series, but i'm glad i resisted... From what some people say it seems they are distracted with constantly trying to tie up the books and the series.

Totally love this series though, it's been a long time since there was a TV show i got giddy with excitement to watch each time.

Really? I didn't think Melisandre was anything like hot enough for the role.

The only one that really stands up to the books is Daenerys.
