"FIA confirms that stewards agreed unanimously to reject the Lotus protest, meaning Merc is free to keep using its double DRS"

Mr Brawn, for the Respondent Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team, provided the Stewards with a detailed paper outlining its response (Exhibit A). This paper contains certain confidential Intellectual Property and could not be provided to Lotus

kimi as happy as usual!

Nice to see the DDRS is approved. Now who will try and add it. Will RB take the hit on packaging to fit it in or not.

I'm still yet to believe it actually holds any real world benefits on anything than a car already right at the front.

The Merc might be able to use it to get good grid slots, but then drop back when they don't have it in the race.

Its a one trick pony. I can't see many teams jumping to redesign their entire car just to gain a few grid slots.

Hmm seems Vettel is challenging Lotus for the Spoilt Brat of the Paddock 2012 Award.

:D

Totally agree

Brilliantly thought out - but for the investment (in changing pannelling all along the car and re-designing the rear /front wings) its not worth it for such a minimal gain) ....obviously worth it for Merc as they didnt pay for the initial designs etc, but for all other teams....I cant see it myself (as I think we both discussed during pre-season testing)

Im sure the same amount of cash can be put to better use for the same / better gains in qualifying

At last, I get to see a race live :)

So why does Hamilton get penalised because of a new gearbox?

I wouldn't write MS off yet though, Only 0.023s behind Button in Malaysia...

I would. He may have a better car now, but I have little faith in his ability to stay out of trouble. Every time he's had a good chance to do well something goes wrong.

aus gearbox failure
malaysia grosjean hit him from behind.

nothing suggests it was his fault or bad luck follows him anymore than it does hamilton or any other driver

Plus I was talking purely Qualifying performance, not the race, no way MS will win it with the Merc... I'd say Button has to be a pretty sure bet for the win.

In Qualifying MS has been very good, up there with the McLarens in both races so far.

hope hamilton can make up a few places and get another podium.

button should start from 2nd (pole) easily enough.

if the mercs get ahead of hamilton in quali he just has to wait 3 laps and they will burn out their tires.

In a push to make cars more reliable and cheaper the FIA imposed a limit on gearbox usage. They must last for a certain number of weekend (is it still 4?) per car. Changing one before this limit is reached carries a 5 grid place penalty for your next start.

Its a similar deal with engines. They have 8 engines to last the whole season per car. There isn't a concurrent weekends limit like gearboxes, they can swap them in an out each weekend rotating the engines usage, but they can't use more than 8 per season. If they use a 9th unit they take a 10 place grid penalty for the next start, and another 10 place penalty for every subsequent new engine used.

I wonder if Lotus will appeal, or if another team will protest using different wording in there questions and evidence?

My God, FIA in sensible ruling shocker!

I still think their ruling on Lotus's suspension was wrong, but there you go. I'm just hoping this puts the whole sorry saga to bed and we get on with watching their rivals struggle to implement their own versions of the concept.

I think the suspension ruling was spot on. They were pretty stupid to not see what Lotus were doing the first time round when they deemed it legal.

Agreed.

Quote from Brawn:

"Obviously there's benefits in the system, but Lotus were quoting they have a 0.2secs benefit (from new parts) coming here," said Brawn before the protest was lodged.

"Well, I can promise you our system is definitely not 0.2secs, particularly in the race.

"You get to use it whenever you overtake, so the amount of effort and time that's gone into it seems disproportionate."

And Mr Button:

Jenson Button, who raced for the team from 2003-2009 when it was BAR, Honda and Brawn, said: "I don't think it's been giving them that much. They are losing out in the race and that's where the points are won.

"It's a great idea. That team is well known for great ideas, we had many in the past when I was there.

"But I don't think it's a great idea that a lot of people are going to spend a lot of time or money in trying to copy because I don't think they think it's as big as it's made out to be".

Personally, given how poor Merc have been during races, scoring 1 point from 4 starts, I wouldn't want to spend time developing their system. If I were another team, I would be focusing more on why the McLaren car is so fast and perhaps adopting some of their ideas.

My way of thinking is copy the best car, not the worst.
